Our opinion on the 2016 vintage

The 2016 vintage in red Bordeaux is an excellent choice, with its dense tannic structure, its vibrant fruit and its very great aging potential. The sweet white Bordeaux wines are balanced, pure and place the Sauternes among the exceptional vintages like 2005, 2007, 2009 or 2010.

In the Northern Rhône, the red Rhône 2016 wines are also worth acquiring, with balanced, aromatic and elegant wines. The white wines from Saint Joseph and Saint Peray are all finesse and charm. Same observation in the Southern Rhône, where the freshness brings a magical balance that augurs long aging for Châteauneuf du Pape, Vacqueyras, Gigondas and Cairanne. Here again, some 100/100 Parker ratings: M. Chapoutier Hermitage Le Pavillon, René Rostaing Côte Rôtie Côte Brune, Janasse Châteauneuf du Pape XXL…

The Corsican wines 2016 are refreshing. The red wines are accessible from their youth. In the South-West, the dessert wines are well balanced. More atypical, the Alsace 2016, harvested very late for some (until January 2017!) yielded some rare late harvests.

In Burgundy, the late April frost devastated up to 30% of the harvest, from Chablis to the Côte de Beaune, reminiscent of the 1981 vintage. We find captivating Pinot Noirs, like the sublime 1978 vintage. The purity and energy of the wines are reminiscent of 2010. The sanitary quality brings to mind the great vintages 2005, 2010 or 2015. The white wines from Burgundy have inherited a very lively profile, conducive to very long aging.

Some, like Georges Roumier, experienced their smallest harvest in 35 years in 2016. The southern part of the Côte de Nuits, from Vosne Romanée to Nuits Saint Georges, however suffered less than Vougeot and Chambolle Musigny. Same observation in Beaune, Volnay, Meursault. The Montrachet 2016 appellation was much more affected in Chassagne Montrachet than in Puligny Montrachet. Moreover, this unique year led 7 Montrachet producers (Romanée Conti, Comtes Lafon, Leflaive, Guy Amiot, Lamy Pillot, Petitjean and Fleurot Larose) to harvest the small amount of grapes obtained to make two common barrels, or approximately only 500 bottles! Unprecedented!

The Bordeaux 2016 wines are legendary. Despite the very present rain, the vintage is generous, seductive, and as balanced as the fantastic Bordeaux 1990. This 2016 vintage has earned numerous 100/100 Parker ratings: Cheval Blanc, Cos d'Estournel, Latour, Haut Brion, Mouton Rothschild, Léoville Las Cases, etc. Together with the 2015 vintage, it continues the series of memorable vintage pairs like 1982/1983, 1989/1990, 2009/2010.

In the Loire, the Sancerre 2016 and Menetou Salon 2016 are particularly successful with fragrant white wines and sumptuous red wines. Certain appellations, such as Montlouis, Chinon and Bourgueil, however also suffered from the severe April frosts.
