Wine from 1964

Discover the wines of 1964 for the perfect gift for a 60th anniversary!

Our opinion on the 1964 vintage

The 1964 vintage in Bordeaux is better in red wines from the Right Bank (Pomerol and Saint Emilion) and in the Graves than in the Médoc. Indeed, the rains of early October came to spoil the Cabernet Sauvignon harvest (the Graves had been harvested just before). The Merlot and Cabernet Franc, which ripen earlier, escaped the rains and were able to produce very good age-worthy wines worth seeking out. The 1964 Graves white wines and the 1964 Sauternes sweet wines, however, have a lesser reputation. In Burgundy, the year 1964 is excellent, offering great red wines that are richly structured and age-worthy. In White Burgundy 1964, the year benefited the areas of Meursault and Puligny Montrachet, but their rather low acidity does not guarantee exceptional ageing potential. In Chablis, a storm destroyed a large part of the 1964 harvest. In Champagne, the 1964 vintage is highly regarded and some producers such as Laurent Perrier describe it as a great vintage. In the Rhône Valley, the year 1964 was dry and produced good wines, but in very limited quantities (notably in Châteauneuf du Pape). In Alsace, the 1964 vintage is excellent, and it remains genuinely possible to enjoy a 1964 Gewurztraminer. The Loire Valley produced a very good 1964 red vintage, and the appellations of Bourgueil, Chinon and Saumur Champigny have often produced very great bottles.

Our advice for buying a wine from 1964

If you wish to invest in a 1964 wine, we recommend directing your choice towards the Right Bank Bordeaux (Pomerol, Saint Emilion) and the Graves: l'Arrosée 1964, Cheval Blanc 1964, Figeac 1964, La Conseillante 1964, Le Gay 1964, Lafleur 1964, Pétrus 1964, Trotanoy 1964, Vieux Château Certan 1964, Domaine de Chevalier 1964, Haut Bailly 1964, Haut Brion 1964, La Mission Haut Brion 1964. In the Médoc, Montrose 1964 and Gruaud Larose 1964 appear to be two fine Médoc wines. In Burgundy, the best-structured and best-preserved red and white wines can still be approached with genuine pleasure (Meursault, Montrachet, and Grand Crus around Chambertin). In the Loire, the 1964 vintage produced excellent red wines such as the Chinon Clos de l'Écho 1964 from Couly Dutheil.

So, for a 60th anniversary, do not hesitate to buy a wine from 1964!

Wine from 1974

Discover the wines of 1974 for the perfect gift for a 50th anniversary!

Our opinion on the 1974 vintage

The year 1974 produced rather weak white Bordeaux and red Bordeaux: an enormous harvest made up of grapes swollen with water from the September rains. However, the red Graves area (Mission Haut Brion 1974 and Domaine de Chevalier are successes) and Château Latour 1974 in Pauillac or Trotanoy in Pomerol also yielded good wines. In Burgundy, the harvest was hampered by unfavourable weather and in both colours, the wines are weak and acidic (some producers even decided not to bottle their 1974 vintage). The Rhône wines are weak in the North and slightly more structured in the South (Châteauneuf du Pape). No region was truly favoured in 1974.

Our advice for buying a wine from 1974

A tip for purchasing a 1974 wine: Pessac Léognan in Bordeaux (Mission Haut-Brion, Domaine de Chevalier) or Latour (Pauillac) and Trotanoy (Pomerol), or a Clos Joliette 1974 (Jurançon).

So, for a 50th anniversary, do not hesitate to buy a wine from 1974!

Wine from 1984

Discover the wines of 1984 for the perfect gift for a 40th anniversary!

Our opinion on the 1984 vintage

A minor vintage for Bordeaux wines, producing rather hard, tannic and acidic red Bordeaux wines. Two events explain this: a disrupted flowering in May (Merlot coulure) and a hurricane (Hortense) that struck the Bordeaux vineyards at the end of September, bringing its rains and winds, and dashing the last hopes for wines dominated by Merlot (Right Bank wines such as the Saint Emilion and Pomerol appellations). The harvest of the Cabernet Sauvignon, which had better withstood the conditions, could then take place, but the red wines, although age-worthy (such as the 1984 classified grand crus wines), proved to be rather acidic, austere and tannic (Merlot being lacking to round them out and give them charm). Some estates on the Right Bank downgraded their production, and even Château Pétrus produced only 20% of its usual harvest. In Bordeaux sweet Sauternes wines, 1984 yielded some elegant wines, but the vintage will not remain long in the memory. The 1984 Burgundy wines fared no better: the difficult flowering, August storms, the cold and September rains having led to millerandage and heavy chaptalization of the wines, making them unattractive. As for the Champagne wines, the Rhône Valley wines, the Loire wines or the Alsace wines, the 1984 vintage is of little interest.

Our advice for buying a wine from 1984

If your choice relates to wines from 1984 (a wine ready to drink and to give as an anniversary vintage), please note that the 1984 Bordeaux wines are intensely coloured (Cabernet Sauvignon) but that the weakness of the Merlot gives them a tight profile, lacking a little of the undeniable charm found in great Bordeaux wines at maturity. In other regions, the 1984 vintage is considered weak.

So, for a 40th anniversary, do not hesitate to buy a wine from 1984!

Wine from 1994

Discover the wines of 1994 for the perfect gift for a 30th anniversary!

Our opinion on the 1994 vintage

Once again, the September rains dampened the ambitions of Bordeaux producers regarding the 1994 Bordeaux wines. The well-drained areas of Graves and the Right Bank of Bordeaux produced good wines (thanks to Merlot). In red wine, where Cabernet Sauvignon was predominant, very rigorous sorting was required (30 to 50% of the harvest), along with lighter fining/filtration to preserve fruit and aromas, as tannins were abundant. Many wines are successful in 1994 red Bordeaux as well as in white Bordeaux, and the best wines of the vintage are very often found in Pomerol or Saint Emilion. In 1994 White Bordeaux, the Pessac Léognan 1994 area is once again in the spotlight, and Haut-Brion 1994 is an exceptional wine! A correct vintage (but far from renowned) for the 1994 Sauternes white wines. In 1994 Burgundy, due to the September rains, the vintage is average in both colours. The reds are sometimes marked by some off-flavours resulting from imperfect grape condition (lack of sorting); the wines are nonetheless better in the areas of Vosne Romanée / Nuits Saint Georges. Some 1994 white Grand Crus can, however, provide pleasant surprises (honeyed notes), but should be drunk without delay. Champagne 1994 suffered as Pinot Noir experienced real difficulties ripening. The Northern Rhône Valley was favoured over the Southern Rhône, and the Hermitage 1994 area produced very fine wines, both red and white. The 1994 vintage is very average in the Loire, but has some fine successes in Alsace for Sélections de Grains Nobles and Vendanges Tardives.

Our advice for buying a wine from 1994

If you are a lover of Bordeaux wines, you may find yourself captivated by the following wines: Léoville Las Cases for the Saint Julien 1994 or Château Angélus for the Saint Emilion 1994. Troplong Mondot, Tertre Roteboeuf and Valandraud 1994 will also be very appealing. In Pomerol 1994: La Conseillante, Château Clinet, L'Evangile, Gazin, or La Fleur de Gay. In 1994 white Bordeaux wines, Haut Brion and Laville Haut-Brion are spectacular successes. From Burgundy, the best 1994 wines can still seduce (Vosne Romanée, Nuits St Georges), but they should be drunk quickly. In the Northern Rhône Valley, seek out the 1994 Hermitage reds and whites, and some 1994 Alsace Sélections de Grains Nobles can delight you at the end of a meal.
