Our take on the 1964 vintage

The 1964 vintage in Bordeaux produced better red wines on the Right Bank (Pomerol and Saint Emilion) and in Graves than in the Médoc. Rain in early October spoiled the Cabernet Sauvignon harvest, though the grapes in Graves had been picked just beforehand. Merlot and Cabernet Franc, which ripen earlier, escaped the rain and yielded some very good age-worthy wines worth seeking out. The 1964 Graves whites and sweet wines from Sauternes, however, are less highly regarded. In Burgundy, 1964 was an excellent year, producing substantial red wines with great aging potential. For 1964 white Burgundy, the areas around Meursault and Puligny Montrachet benefited, although the wines’ fairly low acidity limits how long they can be cellared. In Chablis, a storm destroyed much of the 1964 crop. In Champagne, the 1964 vintage is highly regarded, and some producers, including Laurent Perrier, consider it a great vintage. In the Rhône Valley, 1964 was dry and produced good wines, but in very limited quantities, particularly in Châteauneuf du Pape. In Alsace, the 1964 vintage is excellent, and a 1964 Gewurztraminer can still be a real pleasure. The Loire Valley produced a very good 1964 vintage for reds, with the Bourgueil, Chinon and Saumur Champigny appellations often yielding outstanding bottles.

Our tips for buying a 1964 wine

If you’d like to invest in a 1964 wine, we recommend looking to Bordeaux’s Right Bank (Pomerol, Saint Emilion) and Graves: l’Arrosée 1964, Cheval Blanc 1964, Figeac 1964, La Conseillante 1964, Le Gay 1964, Lafleur 1964, Pétrus 1964, Trotanoy 1964, Vieux Château Certan 1964, Domaine de Chevalier 1964, Haut Bailly 1964, Haut Brion 1964 and La Mission Haut Brion 1964. In the Médoc, Montrose 1964 and Gruaud Larose 1964 appear to be two good wines. In Burgundy, the best-structured and best-preserved reds and whites can still be enjoyed (Meursault, Montrachet and the grands crus around Chambertin). In the Loire, the 1964 vintage produced excellent reds, such as Couly Dutheil’s Chinon Clos de l’Écho 1964. 

So, for a 60th birthday, don’t hesitate to buy a 1964 wine!

Our take on the 1974 vintage

The 1974 vintage produced rather weak white Bordeaux and red Bordeaux: a huge harvest of grapes swollen by September rain. Nevertheless, the red wines of Graves—including the successful 1974 Mission Haut Brion and Domaine de Chevalier—as well as 1974 Château Latour in Pauillac and Trotanoy in Pomerol yielded good wines. In Burgundy, unfavorable weather hampered the harvest, and both reds and whites are weak and acidic; some producers even chose not to bottle their 1974 vintage. Rhône wines are weak in the north and somewhat more structured in the south (Châteauneuf du Pape). No region was truly favored in 1974.

A tip for buying a 1974 wine: try Pessac Léognan in Bordeaux (Mission Haut-brion, Domaine de Chevalier), Latour (Pauillac), Trotanoy (Pomerol), or a 1974 Clos Joliette (Jurançon).

Our take on the 1984 vintage

A modest vintage for Bordeaux wines, producing reds that were rather hard, tannic and acidic. Two events explain this: disrupted flowering in May, which caused poor fruit set in Merlot, and Cyclone Hortense, which struck the Bordeaux vineyards in late September. Its rain and winds dashed the remaining hopes for predominantly Merlot wines, including those from Right Bank appellations such as Saint Emilion and Pomerol. Cabernet Sauvignon held up better and could then be harvested, but the resulting reds—even age-worthy wines such as the 1984 classified growths—proved rather acidic, austere and tannic, lacking the Merlot that would have softened them and lent them charm. Some Right Bank properties declassified their wines, and even Château Pétrus produced just 20% of its usual volume. In Sauternes, 1984 yielded a few elegant sweet Bordeaux wines, but the vintage will not be especially memorable. Burgundy’s 1984 wines fared no better: difficult flowering, August storms, and cold and rain in September led to uneven berry development and extensive chaptalization, leaving the wines with little appeal. As for Champagne, Rhône Valley, Loire and Alsace wines, the 1984 vintage is of limited interest.

If you’re considering a 1984 wine—ready to drink or to give as a birthday-vintage gift—bear in mind that 1984 Bordeaux wines are deeply colored thanks to Cabernet Sauvignon, but the weakness of the Merlot crop gives them a tight profile, without quite the unmistakable charm of mature great Bordeaux wines. In other regions, 1984 is considered a weak vintage.

So, for a 40th birthday, don’t hesitate to buy a 1984 wine!

Once again, September rain dampened Bordeaux growers’ hopes for the 1994 vintage. The well-drained areas of Graves and Bordeaux’s Right Bank produced good wines, thanks to Merlot. For reds dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, extensive sorting was needed—30 to 50% of the harvest—along with gentler fining and filtration to preserve fruit and aromas in the face of abundant tannins. Many 1994 red and white Bordeaux wines were successful, with the vintage’s best often coming from Pomerol or Saint Emilion. Among 1994 white Bordeaux wines, Pessac Léognan again stands out, and Haut-Brion 1994 is an exceptional wine! For Sauternes whites, 1994 was a decent vintage, though far from renowned. In Burgundy, September rain made 1994 an average vintage for both reds and whites. Some reds show off-flavors resulting from grapes in less-than-ideal condition and insufficient sorting; the wines are nevertheless better around Vosne Romanée and Nuits Saint Georges. A few 1994 white grands crus may still offer pleasant surprises, with honeyed notes, but should be drunk soon. Champagne suffered in 1994 because Pinot Noir struggled to ripen. The northern Rhône Valley fared better than the south, and the Hermitage area produced some beautiful 1994 wines, both red and white. The 1994 vintage is decidedly average in the Loire, but Alsace saw some fine successes among its Sélections de Grains Nobles and Vendanges Tardives.

Our tips for buying a 1994 wine

If you love Bordeaux wines, you may be tempted by Léoville Las Cases among the 1994 Saint Julien wines, or Château Angélus among the 1994 Saint Emilion wines. Troplong Mondot, Tertre Roteboeuf and Valandraud 1994 are also well worth considering. From Pomerol 1994, look to La Conseillante, Château Clinet, L’Evangile, Gazin or La Fleur de Gay. Among 1994 white Bordeaux wines, Haut Brion and Laville Haut-Brion are spectacular successes. In Burgundy, the best 1994 wines can still delight (Vosne Romanée, Nuits St Georges), but they should be drunk soon.
