History of Domaine Benoit Rosenberger

Benoit Rosenberger's journey is unlike any other in the world of viticulture: it is the story of a man who started over twice. Originally from Sancerre and from a family with no connection to the wine world, Benoit decided at the age of 20 to pursue a BTSA in Viti-oenology, then spent a good ten years working in Champagne for conventional houses. This immersion in a highly interventionist approach to viticulture, where sulphur and chemical inputs dictate every step, ultimately drove him deeply away from his original vocation. This chemical approach to wine turned him away from the industry, and he decided to go back to school to become a computer engineer, a career he pursued for another ten years.

In 2011, came the revelation: the call of nature grew strong, and his desire to work outdoors led him to take on a small plot in Auvergne, where he had followed his partner at the time. That is where everything changed. Decisive encounters with local winemakers, and in particular his friend Frédéric Gounan, convinced him to start from scratch, but this time by doing things the way that felt right to him. It was Fred Gounan who helped him a great deal at the beginning, and Benoît has since followed the same two-year ageing cycle — tank and barrel — as Fred.

From the very start, Benoit sought out small plots here and there and finally decided to make wine by and for himself. Not wishing to replicate his past experiences, and guided by common sense, he chose to work in a natural way, both in the vineyard and in the cellar, banning the use of sulphur as well as any chemical inputs in his wines.

Terroirs and Vines of Domaine Benoit Rosenberger

Benoit works with approximately three to four hectares of Gamay d'Auvergne from vines aged between 50 and 80 years, spread across small plots on rolling hillsides at altitudes between 350 and 500 metres. This elevated positioning gives the grapes a natural freshness and a remarkable acidity balance, even in warm vintages.

The soil is primarily composed of basalt and granite, which gives the wines an elegant, aromatic character, gleaming with minerality. This volcanic terroir, a direct legacy of the geological activity of the Chaîne des Puys, is one of the great singularities of the Côtes d'Auvergne appellation. It imparts to the Gamay a tension, a salinity and a depth that few regions in France can claim.

The vines are tended entirely by hand. Benoit even foregoes the use of copper and sulphur, preferring to care for his vines with infusions and herbal teas made from dandelion, nettle and pine. This philosophy, taken to its extreme, reflects a deep commitment to soil life and the integrity of the viticultural ecosystem. Every harvest is carried out by hand, with careful selection of the grapes to preserve their integrity.

Winemaking at Domaine Benoit Rosenberger

The winemaking philosophy at Benoit Rosenberger rests on one central principle: allowing the terroir and the fruit to express themselves without constraint. The winemaker adds no inputs whatsoever in his winemaking, meaning that fermentation is triggered solely by indigenous yeasts and that no sulphur is added.

The berries ferment as whole clusters for around fifteen days, then ageing continues through to the spring following the harvest. The cuvées are bottled without fining or filtration. This absolute respect for the raw material guarantees wines of expressive purity that faithfully reflect their vintage and their plot of origin.

The wines are very direct, with great drinkability combined with the depth that Gamay d'Auvergne can offer when vinified with delicacy. At first glance, one might take them for simple easy-drinking wines, but there is much more to them than that: the wines are deep and complex while remaining easy to drink.

The Cuvées of Domaine Benoit Rosenberger

Loup des Vignes

Loup des Vignes is the most direct and most complete expression of Benoit Rosenberger's terroir. This single-varietal Gamay has benefited from healthy farming grounded in sound peasant wisdom, and from low-intervention, input-free winemaking. Tasting reveals a flavourful and digestible wine, with a beautiful ruby robe and violet highlights. Sourced from old vines whose roots plunge into Auvergne basalt and granite, Loup des Vignes unfolds aromas of crunchy red fruits, gentle spices and smoky minerals. On the palate, it combines the natural tension of the volcanic terroir with a melting, generous character, making it a wine as pleasurable to open young as it is capable of developing over a few years in the cellar.

Youthfulness

From the same plot as the Loup des Vignes cuvée, Youthfulness stands apart through a shorter ageing period, making it a lighter, fruitier wine that is more accessible in its youth. Benoit Rosenberger succeeds in showcasing his old gamay vines, aged between fifty and eighty years, whose roots plunge deep into the volcanic Auvergne soil of granite and basalt. The vines spread across gentle slopes at around 400 metres of altitude. Youthfulness lives up to its name, bursting with fruit and purity, delivering a natural wine that is wonderfully easy-drinking and best enjoyed in its simplest form. A perfect red for relaxed evenings with friends, served slightly chilled.

Désaltérofilles

This sparkling rosé is sourced from Gamay vines. The plots, located on hillsides at an altitude of 350 to 500 metres, give rise to a natural pétillant crafted without any inputs, with fermentation triggered by indigenous yeasts and no added sulphur. Désaltérofilles, whose poetic name alone evokes the festive and free spirit of the domaine, reveals itself on the palate as refreshingly thirst-quenching, with fine bubbles and a fruity, floral and lightly saline character.

Une Méduse dans les Cornichons

This special cuvée, of which only 150 magnums were produced at its first release, is an exceptional bottling of Gamay d'Auvergne. Like all the domaine's cuvées, it is crafted without any inputs, from grapes grown by hand on old vines in volcanic terroir. Through its surrealist and offbeat name, this cuvée embodies the free spirit and warm humour that drives Benoit Rosenberger. On the palate, it is a Gamay of rare concentration, mineral and deep, with a finish of considerable length that speaks to the ageing potential of the Saint-Maurice-ès-Allier terroir.
