At the heart of Ampuis, the historic birthplace of the Côte-Rôtie appellation, Domaine Gilles Barge has embodied the winemaking tradition of the northern Rhône Valley for over a century and a half. Established in Ampuis as early as 1860, the Barge family has passed down an exceptional expertise from generation to generation, now in the hands of Julien Barge, son of Gilles. Across 8 hectares farmed using sustainable agriculture, the estate produces Côte-Rôtie of remarkable purity, red and white Saint-Joseph, as well as a superb Condrieu made from Viognier. These are refined, age-worthy wines that rank among the essential references of the Côte Brune and the Côte Blonde.
The story of Domaine Gilles Barge begins in 1860, when the Barge family settled as winegrowers in Ampuis, on the mythical hillsides of Côte-Rôtie. Pierre Barge, the first identified generation, weathered the ordeal of phylloxera at the end of the 19th century, forced to leave his village before returning in 1900 to replant his vines using the grafting technique. But it was Jules Barge, in 1929, who truly inscribed the family in the history of the appellation by becoming one of the very first winegrowers in Ampuis to bottle his wine at the estate. At that time, production was limited to a few cases per vintage, with the remainder sold to négociants.
Pierre Barge, Jules's son, took over and established the family estate as a reference in its own right. From 1974 onwards, the entire harvest was bottled at the estate. Gilles Barge, the first child from Ampuis to pursue oenology studies, joined his father in 1979, complementing tradition with a modern and precise approach. He took over the management of the estate in 1994 and for many years presided over the Côte-Rôtie appellation syndicate, with a commitment recognised throughout the profession. Since 2018–2019, his son Julien Barge has taken over, perpetuating a winegrowing heritage of more than 160 years, of which every cuvée is today a living testament.
Magnificently exposed on the steep hillsides of Ampuis, the vineyard of Domaine Gilles Barge covers approximately 8 hectares spread across 6 hectares of Côte-Rôtie, 1 hectare of Condrieu and 1.3 hectares of Saint-Joseph. The plots are located on the two emblematic sectors of the appellation: the Côte Brune, to the north, whose ferruginous micaceous schist soils yield powerful and structured Syrahs, and the Côte Blonde, to the south, whose granitic soils produce finer and more aromatic wines. The estate notably holds vines on the lieu-dits Combard, Boucharey, Lancement and Chavanay, as well as on the Baleyat, where the oldest vines date back to 1946.
The average age of the vineyard exceeds fifty years, a guarantee of concentration and depth. Viticulture is conducted using a reasoned farming approach, with genuine respect for living ecosystems: Julien Barge has banned chemical herbicides and synthetic treatments, favouring soil cultivation and careful observation of each plot. The vines are grown on narrow terraces, held in place by traditional dry-stone walls, on slopes that can exceed 45°. The Condrieu comes from a sector of 1.2 hectares of granitic terraces, while the Saint-Joseph extends notably over the Clos des Martinets, a 1.2-hectare walled plot with a magnificent exposure.
In the cellar, Domaine Gilles Barge upholds a traditional winemaking approach, deeply faithful to the identity of Côte-Rôtie. Harvests are entirely by hand, and the grapes are generally vinified as whole clusters, without destemming, except in the most delicate vintages. Fermentations take place in temperature-controlled vats using a submerged cap technique, inherited from tradition, which allows for gentle and precise extraction of tannins. Malolactic fermentations are carried out in vats, ensuring the aromatic stability of the wine before its transfer to barrels.
Ageing lasts on average between 24 and 30 months, in a combination of 228-litre barrels, 500- to 600-litre demi-muids, and older casks ranging from 12 to 25 years of age. The proportion of new oak remains measured (10 to 20% depending on the cuvée) so as never to mask the expression of the terroir. Gilles Barge was an early adopter of reduced sulphur use and abandoned fining and filtration — avant-garde choices that his son Julien continues to uphold today. This philosophy produces straight, refined wines, marked by a freshness typical of Côte-Rôtie and a genuine ageing potential, often well beyond fifteen or twenty years.
Côte-Rôtie Cuvée du Plessy: the estate's signature and flagship cuvée, crafted from a blend of 95% Syrah and 5% Viognier, sourced primarily from the Côte Blonde, Boucharey and Lancement sectors. The old Du Plessy vines, planted in the 1940s, form its backbone. Vinified with whole clusters and aged for approximately 24 months in demi-muids, it develops a complex bouquet of soft spices, smoky notes, red and black fruits, underpinned by a fresh, silky and precise palate.
Côte-Rôtie Côte Brune: a fine wine from the estate, launched in 1996 and sourced from old vines aged 40 to 60 years planted on the ferruginous brown schists of the upper slopes of the Côte Brune. Composed of 97–99% Syrah complemented by a touch of Viognier, it is vinified with whole clusters and aged for 30 months in used 600-litre demi-muids. The result is a powerful Côte-Rôtie, vinified for long ageing, marked by notes of flowers, candied raspberry, dark fruits, leather and tobacco.
Côte-Rôtie Le Combard: a spectacular single-vineyard cuvée, sourced from a planting located on the lieu-dit Le Combard, a plot so steep that it is only accessible by rack railway, much like the hillsides of the German Moselle. This pure Syrah reveals a vibrant and peppery character, at once fleshy and mineral, with a thoroughbred tannic structure. A rare cuvée, sought after by enthusiasts of great terroir-driven Côte-Rôtie.
Côte-Rôtie Les Côtes: a more recent cuvée created by Julien Barge, first bottled from the 2013 vintage. It generally blends 95% Syrah and 5% Viognier, vinified as whole clusters and aged in used 600-litre barrels for approximately 30 months. It is an elegant and upright Côte-Rôtie, with pure fruit and a charming structure, expressing a style that is both modern and true to the family tradition.
Condrieu: the estate's only white wine from the Condrieu appellation, crafted from 100% Viognier planted on 1.2 hectares of granitic terraces. It reveals a seductive aromatic nose of white peach, apricot, white flowers and citrus notes, followed by an ample, round and fresh palate. A Condrieu of great purity, faithful to the fragrant character of the grape variety.
Saint-Joseph Clos des Martinets: a red Saint-Joseph from a historic 1.2-hectare walled clos, where the Syrah vines benefit from an ideal exposure. Carefully aged, this cuvée seduces with its deep colour, its rich and refined nose of dark fruits and spices, its elegant palate with fine tannins, round and velvety, extended by a finish of fine depth.
Saint-Joseph Le Clos de la Ribaudy: another single-vineyard cuvée in the Saint-Joseph appellation, crafted in the same spirit as the estate's great Côte-Rôties. A true mini-Côte-Rôtie according to its devoted followers, it combines floral and herbaceous notes with a vibrant cherry and raspberry fruit, a powerful yet slender palate, with a silky texture and a long finish marked by nuances of roses and tea.
Saint-Joseph blanc: produced in very small quantities from Marsanne and Roussanne grape varieties, this white Saint-Joseph completes the range. Carefully vinified and aged, it offers a floral nose of white fruits and fresh almond, and a taut, balanced palate that is at once rich and fresh, bearing witness to the Barge family's expertise with the white grape varieties of the northern Rhône Valley.
