All wines from the Saint-Émilion appellation in Bordeaux

The Saint-Émilion appellation (and Saint-Émilion Grand Cru AOC) is geographically located to the east of the city of Bordeaux (approximately 35 km), in the part of the vineyard area known as the Libournais (Right Bank of the Dordogne). It covers an area of 5,500 hectares, spanning the communes of Saint-Christophe-des-Bardes, Saint-Étienne-de-Lisse, Saint-Hippolyte, Saint-Laurent-des-Combes, Saint-Pey-d'Armens, Saint-Sulpice-de-Faleyrens-Vignonet, as well as part of Libourne (the other part being assigned to Pomerol). Saint-Émilion is one of the most prestigious AOCs, and having been overlooked in the 1855 classification of the Médoc classified growths, this appellation established its own classification of the Grands Crus de Saint-Émilion in 1955 (completed in 1958, and then subject to revision every 10 years since 1986).

Where is the Saint-Émilion appellation located?

The appellation lies in Gironde, about 40 kilometers east of Bordeaux, on the right bank of the Dordogne in the area known as the Libournais. It covers approximately 5,400 hectares shared by the Saint-Émilion and Saint-Émilion Grand Cru appellations, across eight communes (Saint-Émilion, Saint-Christophe-des-Bardes, Saint-Étienne-de-Lisse, Saint-Hippolyte, Saint-Laurent-des-Combes, Saint-Pey-d'Armens, Saint-Sulpice-de-Faleyrens and Vignonet), plus part of Libourne. Perched on its limestone plateau, the medieval village overlooks a landscape of hillsides and valleys that has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999—the first vineyard landscape to receive this designation. The vineyards border Pomerol and Lalande-de-Pomerol to the west, Côtes de Bordeaux Castillon to the east, and the satellite appellations of Montagne, Lussac, Puisseguin and Saint-Georges to the north.

History of the Saint-Émilion appellation

The history of these vineyards dates back to the Gallo-Roman era, when vines became firmly established in the Dordogne Valley, before the Breton monk Émilion gave his name to the town in the eighth century. In 1199, John Lackland established the Jurade. This association of local notables oversaw wine quality and trade, exercising a regulatory role until the French Revolution that foreshadowed the appellation system. In 1884, the commune founded France's first winegrowers' association, and the decree of November 14, 1936, officially recognized the appellation d'origine contrôlée, making it one of the oldest. A classification specific to Saint-Émilion was introduced in 1955 and is distinguished by its review every ten years. Its latest edition, in 2022, recognizes 85 estates, including 14 premiers grands crus classés.

What are the terroirs of the Saint-Émilion appellation?

The terroirs form an exceptional mosaic within a small area, explaining the diversity of styles. The asteria limestone plateau around the town yields wines of great freshness and a long, saline finish. Clay retains water, allowing Merlot to ripen without water stress: this is the territory of Canon, Clos Fourtet and Belair-Monange. The clay-limestone slopes facing south and southwest bring power and density, as on the heights of Pavie and Troplong Mondot. To the northwest, toward Pomerol, an area of gravel and ancient sands produces finer, more aromatic wines—the distinctive terroir of Cheval Blanc and Figeac. The sandy soils at the foot of the slopes ripen earlier and yield supple wines intended to be enjoyed sooner. The temperate oceanic climate completes this balance.

Which grape varieties are permitted in the Saint-Émilion appellation?

The appellation's specifications list Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Carménère and Côt (also known as Malbec) as principal grape varieties; Petit Verdot is permitted as a secondary variety, up to 10% of the vines planted. In practice, Merlot accounts for around 60% of the vineyard area. It thrives in cool clay soils, bringing body, roundness and aromas of preserved red fruit that make these wines so appealing. Cabernet Franc, at around 30%, flourishes on limestone and gravel, contributing aromatic finesse, freshness and tannic structure. Less widely planted, Cabernet Sauvignon is reserved for warm, well-drained soils; it adds spicy notes and enhances aging potential.

What are the different styles of Saint-Émilion wine?

The appellation produces only red wines, at two levels: Saint-Émilion, the more approachable designation, and Saint-Émilion Grand Cru, which is subject to lower yields, longer aging and an additional tasting assessment. The latter category includes the grands crus classés and premiers grands crus classés. Winemakers today favor gentle extraction, measured maceration and less new oak, with barrel aging averaging twelve to eighteen months. The result spans a broad range, from fruity, velvety wines ready to drink young to dense, truffle-scented cuvées built to age. At the table, these wines pair with grilled ribeye, duck breast, roast lamb, duck, lamprey Bordeaux-style, mushrooms, game birds and aged cheeses such as mature Cantal.

What are the best Saint-Émilion vintages?

The benchmark vintages of the past three decades are 1998, 2000, 2005, 2009, 2010, 2015, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2022. The year 1998 remains a landmark for the Right Bank, while 2005 and 2010 combine concentration with freshness. The 2015 and 2016 vintages make an ideal pair: the first alluring, the second more classic and taut. The warm vintages of 2018, 2019 and 2020 offer rich yet balanced wines, while 2022 impresses with the quality of its tannins despite the drought. By contrast, 2007, 2013 and 2017—the last affected by the April frost—remain more fragile, as do 2021 and 2024, difficult years in which only the best terroirs stood out. The 2023 vintage proved uneven after severe downy mildew pressure, while 2025, from Gironde's smallest harvest in three decades, promises precision and character. Drink now: 2012, 2014 and 2017. Hold: 2019, 2020 and 2022.

Which are the best estates in the Saint-Émilion appellation?

Château Cheval Blanc is the most legendary of them all, with 39 hectares of gravel and clay on the edge of Pomerol and vineyards dominated by Cabernet Franc, a unique case among the area's grands crus. Owned by Bernard Arnault and the Frère family since 1998, it produced the legendary 1947 and chose to withdraw from the classification in 2021 without losing any of its aura. Château Ausone, on the southern slope, has just seven hectares of vines planted on a limestone hillside, making it one of Bordeaux's rarest crus. Run by the Vauthier family, it also left the classification in 2021 and produces a wine of aristocratic finesse and exceptional longevity. Château Figeac, promoted to premier grand cru classé A in 2022, farms 54 contiguous hectares on gravel rises. Its unusual blend gives the two Cabernets as much weight as Merlot, earning it the nickname “the Médoc of the Right Bank.” Château Pavie, the only cru to have remained classified A without interruption, has belonged to Gérard Perse since 1998. Its slopes and plateau produce a powerful, dense, expressive wine that regularly earns top scores from international critics. Château Angélus, owned by the de Boüard de Laforest family, occupies a well-exposed western slope and builds its style around a high proportion of Cabernet Franc. Classified A in 2012 before voluntarily withdrawing from the classification in 2022, it remains one of the village's most sought-after crus. Château Canon, acquired in 1996 by the Wertheimer family, owners of Chanel, has an enclosed vineyard on the limestone plateau. For the past decade, it has produced wines noted for their purity and freshness, often cited among the Right Bank's finest recent successes. Château Troplong Mondot, a premier grand cru classé B, crowns the highest point in the appellation. Taken over by the SCOR group in 2017, it has moved away from the excessive ripeness of the past toward a tauter, more approachable style while retaining its density. Château Valandraud, founded in 1991 by Jean-Luc Thunevin and Murielle Andraud, embodies the garage-wine adventure: starting with less than a hectare and artisanal winemaking, it shook up the local hierarchy before attaining premier grand cru classé B status. Finally, Château Le Tertre Rôteboeuf is the appellation's cult cru. François Mitjavile has made wine there since the late 1970s on a small clay-limestone slope, harvesting very ripe grapes, producing no second wine and declining to participate in the classification, resulting in small-production bottles with an inimitable style.

How long can you cellar a Saint-Émilion wine?

A Saint-Émilion can generally be cellared for 4 to 8 years, a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru for 6 to 15 years, a grand cru classé for 10 to 25 years, and a premier grand cru classé for 15 to 40 years, or even longer in vintages with exceptional aging potential, such as 2005, 2010 or 2016. These ranges assume a stable cellar, kept dark and free from vibrations at 12 to 14 degrees Celsius, with humidity close to 70% and bottles stored on their sides to protect the corks. Serve these wines at 16 to 18 degrees Celsius. Decanting for one to two hours benefits young cuvées still restrained by oak and tannins, while a bottle over twenty years old should be carefully decanted just before serving, solely to separate the wine from its sediment.
