All the wines of the Saint Emilion appellation in Bordeaux

The Saint Emilion appellation (and Saint Emilion Grand Cru AOC) is geographically located east of the city of Bordeaux (approximately 35 km), in the part of the vineyard called the Libournais (Right Bank of the Dordogne). It extends over an area of 5,500 Ha, across the communes of Saint-Christophe-des-Bardes, Saint-Etienne-de-Lisse, Saint-Hippolyte, Saint-Laurent-des-Combes, Saint-Pey-d'Armens, Saint-Sulpice-de-Faleyrens-Vignonet, not to mention part of Libourne (the other being allocated to Pomerol). Saint Emilion is one of the most prestigious AOCs, and after being ignored during the 1855 classification of the classified growths of the Médoc, this appellation created in 1955 its own classification of the Grands Crus de Saint Emilion (completed in 1958, then revisable every 10 years since 1986).

The TOP appellation of Bordeaux

The latest classification dates from 2012 (following the annulment of the 2006 classification). In 1958, the classification was established as follows: 12 Premiers Grands Crus Classés A (2) and B (10), and 63 Grands Crus Classés. Since the last classification of 2012, there are now 18 Premiers Grands Crus Classés A (4) and B (14), and 64 Grands Crus Classés. To complicate matters further, there are 2 AOCs (Saint-Émilion and Saint-Émilion Grand Cru) which are geographically the same, but must be distinguished by a technical production standard (yield limited to 40 Hl per hectare and a minimum aging of 12 months for Saint-Émilion Grand Cru AOC). Beyond the village of Saint-Émilion, which is probably the most beautiful wine-growing commune in France, this appellation has a very large number of estates small in size (approximately 8 hectares each)...

Its particularity lies in the fact that the Merlot grape variety largely dominates in the blend of red wines (close to 65% of the total vineyard grape varieties). The soil typology is rather complex, as four main types of terroirs characterize this appellation: a limestone plateau forming around the town of Saint-Émilion, a vast terrace of silico-clayey gravels extending towards Libourne, limestone-clay hillsides and valleys, and a sandy-gravelly plain in the Dordogne valley. Thanks to Merlot, the red wines of Saint-Émilion are more supple and opulent than wines composed mainly of Cabernet Sauvignon. The other grape varieties used are Cabernet Franc (25%), Cabernet Sauvignon (10%), and occasionally Malbec. The great red wines of Saint-Émilion benefit from a solid reputation; they are rich and opulent, lush and complex in great vintages, and endowed with excellent aging potential of 10 to 20 years and more for some. They can be paired at the table with duck breast or duck confit, Tournedos Rossini, grilled rib of beef, sautéed ceps, or a cheese like Mimolette, as part of food and wine pairings.

Among the finest Saint-Émilion wines, you can find the prestigious Château Cheval Blanc or Ausone, as well as the following châteaux: Angélus, Canon, Figeac, Beauséjour Bécot, Beauséjour Duffau Lagarosse, Belair Monange, Canon La Gaffelière, Clos Fourtet, La Dominique, Figeac, La Gaffelière, Larcis Ducasse, Magdelaine, Pavie, Pavie Decesse, Pavie Macquin, Tertre Roteboeuf, Troplong Mondot, Trottevieille, Valandraud, … Among the finest vintages of the Saint-Émilion appellation are 2015, 2014, 2010, 2009, 2005, 2001, 2000, 1998, 1995, 1990, 1989, 1983, 1982, 1964, 1961. Pavie has achieved 4 times the supreme rating of 100/100 Parker in 2010, 2009, 2005, 2000. Cheval Blanc 3 times (2010, 2005, 1947) as well as Beauséjour Duffau Lagarosse (2010, 2009, 1990) and Ausone (2005, 2003, 2000). Bellevue Mondotte twice (2009, 2005). 8 other châteaux have achieved once 100/100 especially in recent vintages (2000, 2005, 2009, 2010).
