All wines from the Saint Emilion appellation in Bordeaux

The Saint Emilion appellation (and Saint Emilion Grand Cru AOC) is geographically located to the east of the city of Bordeaux (approximately 35 km), in the part of the vineyard known as the Libournais (Right Bank of the Dordogne). It covers an area of 5,500 hectares, spanning the communes of Saint-Christophe-des-Bardes, Saint-Etienne-de-Lisse, Saint-Hippolyte, Saint-Laurent-des-Combes, Saint-Pey-d'Armens, Saint-Sulpice-de-Faleyrens-Vignonet, as well as part of Libourne (the other part being allocated to Pomerol). Saint Emilion is one of the most prestigious AOCs, and having been overlooked in the 1855 classification of the classified growths of the Médoc, this appellation created its own classification of the Grands Crus of Saint Emilion in 1955 (completed in 1958, then subject to revision every 10 years since 1986).

Where is the Saint-Émilion appellation located?

The appellation is located in the Gironde, around forty kilometres east of Bordeaux, on the right bank of the Dordogne, in the area known as the Libournais. Its area covers approximately 5,400 hectares shared between the Saint-Émilion and Saint-Émilion Grand Cru appellations, across eight communes (Saint-Émilion, Saint-Christophe-des-Bardes, Saint-Étienne-de-Lisse, Saint-Hippolyte, Saint-Laurent-des-Combes, Saint-Pey-d'Armens, Saint-Sulpice-de-Faleyrens and Vignonet), to which part of the territory of Libourne is added. The medieval village, perched on its limestone plateau, overlooks a landscape of hillsides and valleys that has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1999, a first for a vineyard. This vineyard borders Pomerol and Lalande-de-Pomerol to the west, the Côtes de Bordeaux Castillon to the east, and the satellite appellations of Montagne, Lussac, Puisseguin and Saint-Georges to the north.

History of the Saint-Émilion appellation

The history of this vineyard dates back to the Gallo-Roman era, when the vine took lasting root in the Dordogne valley, before the Breton monk Émilion gave his name to the town in the 8th century. In 1199, the Jurade was established by John Lackland: this brotherhood of notables controlled the quality and trade of wines, a role as wine police that it would fulfil until the Revolution and which foreshadowed the logic of appellations. In 1884, the commune created the first wine growers' union in France, and the decree of 14 November 1936 officially recognised the appellation d'origine contrôlée, making it one of the oldest. A classification specific to Saint-Émilion was established in 1955 and is distinguished by its decennial revision. Its most recent edition, in 2022, recognises 85 properties, including 14 premiers grands crus classés.

What are the terroirs of the Saint-Émilion appellation?

The terroirs form an exceptional mosaic, gathered within a small area, which explains the diversity of styles. The limestone plateau with astéries, around the town, produces wines of great freshness and fine saline length, the clay retaining water and allowing merlot to ripen without water stress: this is the domain of Canon, Clos Fourtet and Belair-Monange. The côtes, argilo-calcareous slopes facing south and south-west, bring power and density, on the heights of Pavie or Troplong Mondot. To the north-west, towards Pomerol, a sector of gravel and ancient sands produces finer, more aromatic wines — the singular terroir of Cheval Blanc and Figeac. The sandy soils at the foot of the slopes, which ripen earlier, yield supple wines intended for earlier drinking. The temperate oceanic climate completes this balance.

Which grape varieties are permitted in the Saint-Émilion appellation?

The specifications list merlot, cabernet franc, cabernet sauvignon, carménère and côt (also known as malbec) as the main grape varieties, with petit verdot permitted as an accessory variety up to a limit of 10% of the vine composition. In practice, merlot accounts for around 60% of the planted surface area: it finds its preferred terrain in the cool clay soils, bringing body, roundness and the aromas of candied red fruits that give these wines their irresistible appeal. Cabernet franc, at around 30%, thrives on limestone and gravel and lends aromatic finesse, freshness and tannic structure. Cabernet sauvignon, more marginal and reserved for warm, well-drained soils, adds spicy notes and enhances ageing potential.

What are the different styles of Saint-Émilion wines?

The appellation produces exclusively red wines, offered at two levels: Saint-Émilion, more accessible, and Saint-Émilion Grand Cru, subject to lower yields, longer ageing and an additional tasting approval, a category that encompasses the grands crus classés and premiers grands crus classés. Winemaking today favours gentle extractions, measured macerations and a reduced proportion of new oak, with barrel ageing lasting on average twelve to eighteen months. The result covers a wide spectrum, from fruity, velvety wines ready to drink young to dense, truffle-scented cuvées built for ageing. At the table, these wines pair beautifully with grilled entrecôte, magret, roast lamb, duck, lamproie à la bordelaise, mushrooms, game birds and aged cheeses such as an old cantal.

What are the best vintages of Saint-Émilion?

The benchmark vintages of the last three decades are 1998, 2000, 2005, 2009, 2010, 2015, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2022. The year 1998 remains a defining date for the Right Bank, while 2005 and 2010 combine concentration and freshness, and 2015 and 2016 form an ideal duo — the former seductive, the latter more classic and taut. The sunny vintages of 2018, 2019 and 2020 yield rich yet balanced wines, with 2022 impressing through the quality of its tannins despite the drought. Conversely, 2007, 2013 and 2017, marked by April frost, remain more fragile, as do 2021 and 2024, difficult years in which only the finest terroirs delivered outstanding results. 2023 proved uneven after severe mildew pressure, and 2025, from the smallest Gironde harvest in three decades, promises to be precise and refined. To drink now: 2012, 2014 and 2017. To wait for: 2019, 2020 and 2022.

What are the best estates of the Saint-Émilion appellation?

Château Cheval Blanc is the most mythical of all, with 39 hectares of gravel and clay on the border with Pomerol and a planting dominated by cabernet franc, a unique case among the great crus of the area. Owned by Bernard Arnault and the Frère family since 1998, it produced the legendary 1947 and chose to withdraw from the classification in 2021, without losing any of its aura. Château Ausone, on the southern slope, has only seven hectares of vines planted on a limestone hillside, making it one of the rarest crus in Bordeaux. Led by the Vauthier family, which also withdrew from the classification in 2021, it produces a wine of aristocratic finesse and rare longevity. Château Figeac, promoted to premier grand cru classé A in 2022, cultivates 54 hectares in a single block on gravel ridges, with an unusual blend in which the two cabernets carry as much weight as merlot, earning it the nickname of the Médoc of the Right Bank. Château Pavie, the only cru to have remained classified A without interruption, has belonged to Gérard Perse since 1998: across the slopes and plateau, it produces a powerful, dense and demonstrative wine, regularly praised with top scores by the international press. Château Angélus, owned by the de Boüard de Laforest family, occupies a well-exposed western slope and builds its style on a high proportion of cabernet franc. Classified A in 2012 and then voluntarily withdrawn from the classification in 2022, it remains one of the most sought-after crus in the village. Château Canon, acquired in 1996 by the Wertheimer family, owners of Chanel, has a walled vineyard on the limestone plateau and has for a decade been producing wines of remarkable purity and freshness, frequently cited among the finest recent achievements on the Right Bank. Château Troplong Mondot, a premier grand cru classé B, crowns the highest point of the appellation. Taken over in 2017 by the SCOR group, it has moved away from the excesses of over-ripeness of former years towards a tauter, more digestible style, while retaining its density. Château Valandraud, created in 1991 by Jean-Luc Thunevin and Murielle Andraud, embodies the garage wine adventure: starting from less than one hectare and artisanal winemaking, it shook up the local hierarchy before reaching the rank of premier grand cru classé B. Château Le Tertre Rôteboeuf, finally, is the cult cru of the appellation: François Mitjavile has been making wine there since the late 1970s on a small argilo-calcareous slope, harvesting very ripe fruit, with no second wine and no participation in the classification, producing rare bottles with an inimitable style.

How long should a Saint-Émilion wine be aged?

A Saint-Émilion generally keeps for between 4 and 8 years, a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru between 6 and 15 years, a grand cru classé between 10 and 25 years, and a premier grand cru classé from 15 to 40 years, or even longer in vintages with exceptional ageing potential such as 2005, 2010 or 2016. These ranges assume a stable cellar, between 12 and 14 degrees, dark, free from vibrations, with humidity close to 70% and bottles stored on their sides to preserve the cork. Serve these wines between 16 and 18 degrees. Decanting for one to two hours benefits younger cuvées still tightly structured by wood and tannins, while a bottle more than twenty years old should be carefully decanted at the last moment, solely to separate it from its sediment.
