Château Lalande-Borie is a Saint-Julien from the left bank of the Bordeaux vineyard, in the Médoc, created in 1970 by the Borie family, who also own the famous Château Ducru-Beaucaillou. Crafted by the same team on an exceptional terroir surrounded by classified growths, this cabernet sauvignon-dominant red wine embodies the elegance and finesse characteristic of the Saint-Julien appellation, at a very attractive quality-to-price ratio. Classified as Cru Bourgeois, it was renamed Le Petit Ducru from the 2019 vintage onwards.
The history of Château Lalande-Borie is relatively recent by the standards of the great Bordeaux châteaux. The estate was created in 1970 by Jean-Eugène Borie, a négociant and major figure in the wine world, who acquired around thirty hectares of land at the lieu-dit Lalande from the owners of Château Lagrange, a Troisième Cru Classé. Rather than incorporating these plots into his prestigious Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, he chose to make it a cru in its own right, whose name combines the family's surname with that of the lieu-dit.
In 1982, Jean-Eugène Borie also acquired the cellars of the former Château Saint-Pierre-Sevaistre, which became those of Lalande-Borie. Since its creation, the estate has never left the Borie family, who today watches over it with the same care as over Ducru-Beaucaillou, the "Super Second" of Saint-Julien. Run by the same team, advised by oenologist Eric Boissenot, Château Lalande-Borie has built a solid reputation. From the 2019 vintage onwards, it continues its story under the name Le Petit Ducru.
The Château Lalande-Borie vineyard extends in a single block over around thirty hectares, of which some twenty are planted with vines, to the west of the Saint-Julien appellation, at the heart of prestigious classified growths, between Châteaux Lagrange and Talbot. It rests on a highly sought-after terroir of gravel, sometimes sandy, on a clay base that facilitates drainage and ensures a naturally optimal water supply.
The grape variety blend is dominated by cabernet sauvignon (around 65%), the king grape of the Médoc, complemented by merlot (25%) and cabernet franc (10%). Planted at a density of 8,500 vines per hectare, the vines, averaging thirty-five years of age, are managed using integrated pest management, with yields limited to around 45 hectolitres per hectare to guarantee the quality of the grapes. The harvesting is done by hand, with selective sorting carried out directly in the vineyard.
Château Lalande-Borie is crafted using traditional winemaking, overseen by the team at Château Ducru-Beaucaillou. After manual harvesting and meticulous sorting, the grapes are carefully brought to the cellar, then vinified in stainless steel vats. The fermentations are conducted in a way that reveals the full personality of the fruit, without extracting too many tannins or too much matter, in the pursuit of balance and finesse so dear to the Borie family.
The finest lots are then selected by the cellar master and aged in Bordeaux barrels comprising 20 to 30% new wood depending on the vintage. The signature of Bruno Borie and Eric Boissenot yields refined wines with great length on the palate, archetypal of the Saint-Julien appellation. The result is an elegant and refined wine, without sacrificing any substance, built for good ageing.
Château Lalande-Borie (Saint-Julien, red) is the estate's flagship cuvée, dominated by cabernet sauvignon, complemented by merlot and cabernet franc. It displays an intense colour and unfolds a beautiful aromatic richness, blending ripe dark fruits with subtle spicy notes. The palate, with a gentle freshness, rests on dense and well-integrated tannins, while the finish reveals the full finesse of this wine for ageing. Elegant and powerful at once, it can comfortably be cellared for more than ten years and pairs ideally with red meats, lamb, game and aged cheeses.
A perfect expression of a Saint-Julien terroir worked by the Borie family, Château Lalande-Borie has always offered an excellent quality-to-price ratio, in keeping with the great crus of the appellation. From the 2019 vintage, this wine is marketed under the name Le Petit Ducru, extending its story within the Château Ducru-Beaucaillou galaxy. Wine lovers will thus find, under one label or the other, the same refined style and the same family signature.
