Clos Rougeard was founded in 1664 on the lands of Chacé, a village located not far from Saumur, and eight generations of winegrowers have succeeded one another at its helm. It was the Foucault family, and more particularly the brothers Charly and Nady, who forged the estate's international reputation from the 1970s onwards, by adopting viticulture without chemical inputs at a time when agrochemistry dominated. In 1993, during a blind tasting in Paris bringing together great wines from Pomerol, the cuvée Le Bourg from Clos Rougeard came out on top ahead of the greatest names in the appellation. This remarkable feat definitively established the estate as an absolute reference of the Loire.

The estate produces a deliberately limited number of cuvées, each linked to a specific plot. Le Clos is the result of blending several plots and offers an accessible yet very precise reading of the estate's style. Les Poyeux stands out for its delicacy, its floral aromas and its silky mouthfeel. Le Bourg, from very old vines, is undoubtedly the most iconic cuvée: powerful, structured and built for ageing. Brézé, in white, reveals the full nobility of Chenin Blanc with a pronounced minerality and remarkable complexity. 

The aging potential is one of the most remarkable signatures of Clos Rougeard. Thanks to more than two years of aging in barrels and maturation in tuffeau cellars dug seven metres deep, the wines develop exceptional longevity. The entry-level cuvée Le Clos already presents an aging potential of at least 30 years, while Les Poyeux and Le Bourg can span several decades in great vintages. The white Brézé is no exception: its longevity is often underestimated, with certain vintages evolving favourably well beyond twenty years in the cellar.

Clos Rougeard is located in the Saumur-Champigny appellation, in the heart of the Loire Valley. The three red cuvées are made from Cabernet Franc, and the white cuvée is made from Chenin Blanc, the two emblematic grape varieties of the Loire. The vineyard rests on rich clay-limestone soils associated with the presence of tuffeau, the emblematic stone of the region, which promotes slow and balanced ripening of the grapes. This unique combination of grape variety and terroir gives the estate's wines their floral, mineral signature and great finesse.

The winemaking philosophy of Clos Rougeard is based on minimal human intervention. The vines are cultivated using biodynamic methods, without herbicides or pesticides. Long ageing periods, lasting from 18 to 30 months, produce red and white wines of great complexity. The grapes are harvested by hand, the wines undergo neither fining nor filtration, and the sulphur dosage used is minimal. This artisanal and patient approach has been at the heart of the estate's identity for several generations.

The wines of Clos Rougeard lend themselves to beautiful food and wine pairings thanks to their elegant and structured profile. The red wines pair perfectly with red meats, game, slow-cooked dishes or aged cheeses, and their finesse also allows for subtle pairings with more contemporary gastronomic cuisine. The white Brézé, for its part, ideally accompanies noble fish, shellfish and refined dishes based on seafood. For enthusiasts who wish to fully appreciate the complexity of the red cuvées, decanting for one to two hours is generally recommended before serving.

History of Domaine Clos Rougeard

Founded in 1664 in the village of Chacé, Clos Rougeard is one of the most prestigious wine estates in the Loire Valley. Over the centuries, eight generations of the Foucault family have succeeded one another in maintaining and perfecting the estate's viticultural practices. It was in the 1970s that Charly and Nady Foucault, representatives of the eighth generation, embarked on a true revolution by adopting organic farming methods long before they became a trend.

Charly Foucault, a true visionary, dedicated himself to creating wines capable of rivalling the greatest crus, while adhering to a simple philosophy: allowing the wine to express itself naturally. Together with his brother Nady, they established Clos Rougeard as a world reference, notably through unique winemaking techniques and wines produced without the use of chemicals.

Following Charly's passing in 2015, the estate was acquired by the Bouygues family in 2017, who are also the owners of Château Montrose in Saint Estèphe, marking a new era for this iconic domaine. Under the direction of Cyril Chirouze, since 2022, Clos Rougeard continues to uphold its standards of quality, while perpetuating the legacy of the Foucault brothers.

Terroirs and Vines of Domaine Clos Rougeard

The Clos Rougeard vineyard extends over 15 hectares spread across 25 distinct plots, primarily on clay-limestone soils. This exceptional terroir, respected and preserved for generations, is home to very old vines, some of which are over 100 years old. The estate has never used chemical products, thereby fostering a rich biodiversity that contributes to the unique quality of its wines.

The majority of the vines are planted with Cabernet Franc, the emblematic grape variety of the Saumur-Champigny appellation, while a small portion is devoted to Chenin Blanc, used for the white cuvées. This terroir, characterised by a great diversity of soils, makes it possible to produce wines of unparalleled depth and finesse, while remaining true to the pure expression of nature.

Winemaking at Domaine Clos Rougeard

At Clos Rougeard, winemaking is conceived as a gentle and minimalist process. The guiding principle: let time do the work. After meticulous manual harvesting, the grapes are handled with great care to preserve their purity and unique character.

The winemaking is carried out without any chemical intervention, in keeping with the wine's natural cycles. The ageing, for its part, lasts between 18 and 30 months in oak barrels, deep within the cellars carved into the tuffeau, more than seven metres underground. This lengthy refinement process allows the wines to develop complex aromas, an elegant structure, and a silky texture.

The Cuvées of Domaine Clos Rougeard

Domaine Clos Rougeard produces four iconic cuvées, each expressing the singularity of its terroir.
