The essential of Côte-Rôtie

Wines from Domaine Jamet: buy at the best price

The Jamet estate was founded in 1975 on the lieu-dit "Le Vallin" in Côte Rôtie, and it boasts a superb 17-hectare vineyard, of which 14 ha are devoted to red wines on soils composed of schist and granite (producing approximately 70,000 bottles per year). Corinne and Jean Paul Jamet began vinifying their first vintage in 1976 (alongside Jean Paul's father, Joseph Jamet), and are thus celebrating their 44th vintage with the 2019. Loïc, the eldest son, has been working alongside Corinne and Jean-Paul at the estate for 4 years and will soon take over the reins. Although not certified organic, the viticulture draws heavily from these techniques.

Frequently Asked Questions

Domaine Jamet has established itself as an unmissable reference in the Côte-Rôtie appellation, thanks to a family-driven standard of excellence passed down from generation to generation. Founded on the Ampuis plateau, at the lieu-dit Le Vallin, the estate was built on the determination to produce a wine of the highest quality from its very first bottlings in 1976. Its signature lies in the meticulous blending of plots with complementary terroirs, which gives the wines an aromatic complexity and a consistency from vintage to vintage that has been praised by the world's most prominent critics.

The philosophy of Domaine Jamet is rooted in a traditional, minimally interventionist approach. The grapes are never destemmed, but are lightly crushed and ferment using their own indigenous yeasts. Daily pump-overs extract colour, tannins, and aromas, while careful temperature control preserves the wine's finesse. The emblematic blend is then aged for approximately 22 months in barrels, with around 15% new oak, before being bottled.

The wines of Domaine Jamet are renowned for their remarkable longevity. Thanks to the rigour of the winemaking and the richness of the schist and granite terroirs, the ageing potential of the Côte-Rôtie wines can reach up to 30 years. The great cuvées such as the classic Côte-Rôtie or La Landonne ideally benefit from several years of cellaring before fully expressing their aromatic complexity — notes of black olive, smoke, spice, and ripe fruit — and their characteristic silky texture.

The Domaine Jamet vineyard is planted almost 100% with Syrah, spread across 25 plots in no fewer than 17 different lieux-dits within the Côte-Rôtie appellation. The majority of these lieux-dits are located on the Côte Brune, whose brown schist soils produce a Syrah with pronounced dark fruit, a firm tannic structure, and strong ageing potential. The estate also holds plots on the Côte Blonde, which contribute roundness and florality to the final blend.

Domaine Jamet offers several distinct cuvées. These include the Côte-Rôtie Fructus Voluptas, the Côte-Rôtie La Landonne, and the Côte-Rôtie Brune, the latter sourced from a single plot of vines around thirty years old. The La Landonne cuvée, produced since the 2018 vintage, is vinified with 100% whole clusters and is bottled in very limited quantities each year, making it the rarest in the range. The estate also produces a white Condrieu, the Vernillon cuvée, as well as red and white Côtes du Rhône.

No, even though Côte-Rôtie remains the heart and showcase of the estate. The Jamet family produces wines under three appellations: Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, and Côtes du Rhône. The Condrieu Vernillon, vinified by Loïc Jamet, is aged for ten months in clay jars, which amplifies the minerality and florality characteristic of Viognier. This diversity allows enthusiasts to discover the estate's expertise through different expressions of the Rhône Valley terroir, from powerful, age-worthy reds to elegant and aromatic whites.

History of Domaine Jamet

The history of Domaine Jamet is that of a family saga woven from deep convictions and an unwavering fidelity to the terroir. It all begins in the 1950s, when Joseph Jamet, the founder, acquires a modest parcel of 0.35 hectares on the Côte Brune, at the time planted with fruit trees such as peach and apricot trees, easier to cultivate than the steep terraces of Côte-Rôtie. At that time, like most local winegrowers, Joseph sold his grapes to négociants, marking the modest beginnings of an estate in this legendary vineyard of the Northern Rhône Valley.

It is in 1976 that the story takes a decisive turn. Jean-Paul Jamet, aged just 16, leaves school to join his father and his mother Simone. This vintage marks the estate's first bottling, a pioneering gesture that lays the foundations of an artisanal production. Jean-Paul, often working alongside iconic neighbours such as Marius Gentaz, whose vines adjoin his on the Côte Brune, quickly forges his convictions. With some forty harvests to his name by 2015, he advocates the blending of terroirs to sublimate the complementarity of Côte-Rôtie expressions, far removed from passing trends.

In the 1980s, the brothers Jean-Paul and Jean-Luc Jamet took over the running of the estate, doubling its surface area to more than 8 hectares through careful acquisitions and replantings. Corinne joined the team in the early 1990s, brilliantly managing the reception of clients and the passionate exchanges around a tasting. In 2013, a chapter closed with the amicable separation of the brothers, who divided the 16 hectares into two equal estates. Jean-Paul, Corinne and their children retained the historic heart on the Le Vallin plateau, near Ampuis, while Jean-Luc founded his own adjacent estate.

Today, Loïc, trained in viticulture and oenology and enriched by international experiences such as an immersion in South Africa, plays an increasingly important role alongside his father. Fanny manages the commercial side, and the youngest, Dorian, is exploring gastronomy. This father-to-son transmission, marked by absolute trust and a spirit of fusion, takes shape in innovations such as the first Condrieu in 2015. With the 2026 vintage, Jean-Paul will celebrate 50 years of winemaking, a milestone that underscores the longevity and consistency of an estate that has been able to modernise its facilities — such as the adoption of gravity-fed tanks in 2001 — without betraying its traditional roots. Domaine Jamet thus remains an icon, praised by critics such as Eric Beaumard and John Livingstone-Learmonth for its finesse and balance.

Terroirs and Vines of Domaine Jamet

The terroirs of Domaine Jamet are a treasure of diversity, sculpted by centuries of geology in the steep hillsides of Côte-Rôtie, overlooking the town of Ampuis and the Rhône. Situated on the Le Vallin plateau, four kilometres from the village, the estate offers a breathtaking panorama of Mont Blanc on clear days. These steep slopes, arranged in terraces known as "chayets", challenge vignerons with their gradient and unforgiving nature, demanding painstaking manual work and humility in the face of "mountain viticulture".

The subsoil is dominated by schist, with touches of granite on the Côte Blonde and clay-limestone soils in the Côtes du Rhône. Across 8 hectares of Côte-Rôtie, spread over 20 to 25 parcels and 15 to 17 lieu-dits, the Syrah (100% for the reds) expresses a magical complementarity: the Côte Brune, with its brown schists, brings tannic structure, dark fruits and longevity; the Côte Blonde, granitic, infuses floral elegance and freshness. The emblematic parcels such as Fongeant, Landonne, Côte Rozier, Plomb, Chavaroche, Moutonnes, Lésardes, Gerine, Truchet, Leyat, Bonnivières, Côte Bodin, Tartaras and Rochins, ranging from 5 to 85 years old (some planted in the 1940s), offer a mosaic of maturities and exposures. Yields are controlled at 35 hectolitres per hectare, favouring concentration and intensity.

In the Côtes du Rhône and IGP Collines Rhodaniennes, 4.8 hectares of schist and clay-limestone soils complete the landscape, with Syrah vines ranging from 4 to 50 years old. For the whites, 2 hectares blend Marsanne, Viognier, Roussanne and Grenache Blanc on micaceous schist and limestone. The Condrieu Vernillon, since 2015, comes from 0.5 hectares of biotite and muscovite granite on Vernon and Côte Chatillon. The reasoned viticulture, with a minimum of interventions, respects both soils and vines: constant monitoring by Loïc, limited treatments (three in 2011), regular ploughing and historic training at 2.5 metres for optimal ripeness. These vines, patiently replanted over four decades, ensure generational continuity, making the Jamet terroir an inestimable heritage for wines of exceptional purity and vitality.

Vinifications of Domaine Jamet

Vinification at Domaine Jamet is an art of restraint and precision, guided by Jean-Paul's instinct and the family's collective expertise. Respectful of nature, they opt for a non-interventionist approach, using indigenous yeasts and avoiding systematic fining or filtration. The harvests, manual and rigorous, arrive in the cellar by gravity since the 2001 modernisation, preserving the integrity of the grapes.

For the reds, the signature is whole-cluster harvesting, 70 to 100% depending on the vintage and parcels, favouring a maceration of 15 to 20 days in stainless steel tanks to extract colour and fresh tannins without forced extraction. Pump-overs and punch-downs are gentle, adapted to each lot. The blending, Jean-Paul's watchword, harmonises the expressions: parcels with higher acidity from the upper hillsides against those more ripe from the mid-slopes. Ageing, from 12 to 24 months, takes place in varied vessels (228 L barriques, pièces, 500–600 L demi-muids), with only 5 to 30% new oak to subtly integrate vanilla and spices without masking the fruit. Sulphur is minimal, and malolactic fermentations take place in barrel for better integration.

The whites ferment partially in barrel and tank, with selective malolactic fermentation for freshness. The Condrieu Vernillon, vinified by Loïc, rests 10 months in clay jars, amplifying the minerality and florality of the Viognier. This philosophy, rooted in 50 years of experience, produces juicy, pure and energetic wines, balanced for ageing from 15 to 30 years.

The cuvées of Domaine Jamet

Domaine Jamet excels across a range of cuvées that cover the essence of the Rhône Valley, each revealing a unique facet of the terroir.

Côte Rôtie: The emblematic blend, sourced from 20 parcels across 15 lieu-dits (Fongeant, Côte Blonde, Landonne, etc.), is 100% Syrah on schist and granite. Vinified as a whole-cluster harvest with a 20-day maceration, it is aged 22 months in barrels (15% new). Deep colour, notes of smoked black olives, an ample and dense palate, with camphor potential in cooler vintages. Ageing potential: 15–25 years. Limited production, it is the quintessence of Côte-Rôtie.

Côte Rôtie Côte Brune: The only single-parcel selection since 1976, from one hectare of pure schist. 100% whole-cluster harvest, 20-day maceration, aged 24 months in barrels (30% new). Complex and typic, with structured dark fruits and exceptional longevity. Ageing potential: 20–30 years. A bottle for lovers of depth.

Côte Rôtie La Landonne: Launched in 2018, sourced from a 0.26 ha parcel planted in 1987 on schist. Whole-cluster harvest, 20-day maceration, aged 24 months in barrels. Elegant and mineral, with florality and tension. Ageing potential: 20–30 years. Confidential production.

Condrieu Vernillon: Loïc's creation since 2015, 100% Viognier on 0.5 ha of granite (Vernon and Côte Chatillon). Aged 10 months in jars for a pure and mineral expression. Exotic freshness, notes of apricot and white flowers. Ageing potential: 5–8 years.

Côtes du Rhône Blanc: A septentrional blend from 2 ha on clay-limestone schist (Lézardes, Cognet, etc.). 40% Marsanne, 40% Viognier, 15% Roussanne, 5% Grenache Blanc, vines aged 6–35 years. Mixed barrel/tank fermentation, aged 50% in barrels/50% in stainless steel. Mineral and fresh, for immediate pleasure.

Côte Rôtie Fructus Voluptas: An accessible, fruit-forward cuvée since 2008, 100% Syrah on schist (vines ~20 years old). Mostly destemmed, 15–20-day maceration, aged 16 months in used barrels. Juicy and balanced, for early drinking pleasure. Ageing potential: 12–18 years.

Côtes du Rhône Équivoque: Since 2015, 100% Syrah from parcels bordering Côte-Rôtie (schist). Partially destemmed, 20-day maceration, aged 22 months in barrels. Structured and complex, a "declassified Côte-Rôtie". Ageing potential: 15–20 years.

Côtes du Rhône Rouge: A blend from the high hillsides (Lézardes, etc.), 100% Syrah on schist (4.8 ha, 4–50 years old). Destemmed, 15-day maceration, aged 12 months in old barrels. Full Syrah character, a reliable choice.

IGP Collines Rhodaniennes Syrah: 100% Syrah on 1.5 ha of granite and micaceous schist (8–25 years old). Mini-Côte-Rôtie style, fruity and approachable. Aged in used barrels.
