Anne Gros

An iconic estate in Vosne-Romanée

Wines from Domaine Anne Gros: buy at the best price

Located in the town of Vosne Romanée in the heart of Burgundy, the history of the estate began in 1951 when Louis Gros decided to create his vineyard. From 1984, the Louis Gros estate was divided into three estates (including AF Gros and Gros Frère et Soeur) taken over by the winemaker's children. One of the sons created the François Gros estate, which was taken over in 1988 by his daughter Anne Gros, before finally being renamed in 1995 the Domaine Anne Gros. The Côte de Nuits vineyard covers 6.5 hectares on clay-limestone soils, of which 5 hectares are planted with red wines (100% Pinot Noir) and 1.5 hectares with white wines (100% Chardonnay).

Frequently Asked Questions

Domaine Anne Gros is based in Vosne-Romanée, at the heart of the Côte de Nuits. It produces red and white wines from prestigious Burgundian terroirs, including Hautes-Côtes de Nuits, regional Bourgogne appellations, as well as village appellations and premiers crus. Anne Gros also crafts cuvées from grands crus such as Richebourg, Clos Vougeot and Échézeaux, which rank among the most sought-after by lovers of great Burgundy.

Domaine Anne Gros practises a demanding approach to viticulture, oriented towards respect for the terroir and the environment. Vine management favours reasoned practices, with particular attention paid to yields and grape maturity. In the cellar, Anne Gros favours plot-by-plot vinification that best expresses the identity of each appellation, with carefully measured oak ageing designed to preserve the finesse and purity of the fruit.

The red wines of Domaine Anne Gros, drawn primarily from the Pinot Noir grape, pair elegantly with refined gastronomic cuisine. The village and premier cru appellations are a wonderful match for a beef tenderloin in sauce, duck with cherries, or a selection of aged cheeses. The grand crus such as Richebourg or Échézeaux call for truly exceptional dishes: black truffle, game birds, or Bresse poultry in a creamy sauce.

Domaine Anne Gros enjoys an exceptional reputation thanks to rigorous work both in the vineyard and in the cellar. Anne Gros perpetuates a family tradition inherited over several generations, favouring low yields, terroir-respectful viticulture and precise vinifications that faithfully express the character of each individual plot. This care taken at every stage of production imparts to her wines a finesse, complexity and depth that earn unanimous praise from enthusiasts and critics alike.

Certain vintages from Domaine Anne Gros are particularly well suited to long-term cellaring. The years 2005, 2010, 2015, and 2019 are renowned for their structure, concentration, and exceptional aging potential in the Côte de Nuits. The great cuvées such as Richebourg or Clos Vougeot can be kept and can flourish over 15 to 25 years under good storage conditions.

The wines of Domaine Anne Gros, particularly its Grands Crus and Premiers Crus, are wines for the cellar that deserve special attention. It is advisable to store them at a stable temperature between 12 and 14°C, away from light and vibrations. When serving, decanting is recommended for young wines in order to allow them to open up and reveal all their aromas. The reds are ideally served between 16 and 18°C, in a glass suited to great Burgundies.

History of Domaine Anne Gros

The history of Domaine Anne Gros is rooted in a winemaking lineage that began in 1830, when Alphonse Gros settled in Vosne-Romanée. As early as the 1880s, his son Louis-Gustave distinguished himself by selling his wines in bottles directly to private customers — a rare practice at the time. His grandson Jules further developed this approach from 1895 onwards, laying the foundations for a growing reputation. Upon the death of Louis Gros in 1951, the original estate was divided among his four children, giving rise to several entities, including that of François Gros, Anne's father.

François Gros, born in 1931, brought intellectual rigour to the estate, managing the accounts before taking charge of his 3 hectares of vines from 1970 onwards. Despite health issues that slowed activity during the 1980s, his daughter Anne took over the reins in 1988. Trained in viticulture in Beaune and oenology in Dijon, she breathed new life into the estate, renaming it Domaine Anne Gros in 1995. Under her stewardship, the initial 3 hectares expanded to 6.5 hectares through the acquisition of prestigious plots such as Vosne-Romanée « Les Barreaux ». In 2019, Anne handed the estate over to her three children — Julie, Paul and Marine — while continuing to guide them. This transition marks the arrival of the 7th generation, ready to carry on the legacy of excellence of Domaine Anne Gros.

Terroirs and Vines of Domaine Anne Gros

Domaine Anne Gros flourishes on exceptional terroirs, principally in Vosne-Romanée and Chambolle-Musigny, where each plot reveals a unique identity. The clay-limestone soils, varied exposures and microclimates of the Côte de Nuits offer a palette of characters that Anne Gros elevates with precision. Among the jewels of the estate, the Richebourg Grand Cru plot (0.6 ha), acquired in 1882, rests on a stony brown soil, while Clos Vougeot Grand Cru (0.94 ha), planted in 1904, benefits from deep clay soil with natural drainage. Echezeaux Grand Cru (0.76 ha), located at the lieu-dit Les Loachausses, stands out for its early ripening and fossil-rich stony soils.

The village-level plots, such as Vosne-Romanée « Les Barreaux » (0.39 ha), planted in 1903, and Chambolle-Musigny « La Combe d'Orveau » (1.1 ha), adjoin prestigious grand crus, lending the wines a remarkable finesse. The regional appellations, such as Bourgogne Rouge (0.87 ha) and Hautes Côtes de Nuits (1.73 ha), complete this heritage with vines planted on clay or fossiliferous soils at altitudes that provide an ideal ripening offset. Viticulture — intuitive and reasoned — prioritises respect for the soils and biodiversity, with selective grass cover and a limitation of inputs, ensuring grapes of optimal quality for each vinification.

Winemaking at Domaine Anne Gros

Winemaking at Domaine Anne Gros combines tradition and modernity, with absolute respect for the fruit and the terroir. The Pinot Noirs, entirely destemmed, ferment in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats for 10 to 20 days, depending on the vintage. Pump-overs and punch-downs, adjusted daily, allow for gentle and precise extraction. After vatting, the free-run and press juices are blended, settled for 2 to 5 days, then transferred by gravity for 14 months of ageing in oak barrels. The grand crus receive 30 to 40% new barrels, the village wines 30%, and the regional appellations even less, thus preserving the purity of the fruit.

The Chardonnays, pressed immediately, undergo cold settling before a fermentation begun in stainless steel vats and completed in 500-litre barrels (30% new for the Hautes Côtes de Nuits Blanc). This approach endows the white wines with a mineral tension and a silky texture. Every step, from vine to cellar, is guided by Anne Gros's intuition, as she seeks to express the soul of each plot while producing elegant, balanced wines suited to long ageing.

The cuvées of Domaine Anne Gros

Domaine Anne Gros offers a range of cuvées reflecting the diversity and richness of its terroirs. Here is a comprehensive overview of the wines available to purchase:

Richebourg Grand Cru (0.6 ha, Les Verroilles): This grand cru, sourced from vines aged 50 to 75 years, offers supreme elegance. Its floral (peony, violet), spiced (liquorice, coriander) and fruity (raspberry, blackcurrant) aromas intertwine with a vibrant minerality. On the palate, the silky tannins and exceptional length make it a wine for long ageing par excellence, ideal with roasted game or truffle-based dishes. Ageing: 30% new oak barrels.

Clos Vougeot Grand Cru (0.94 ha, Le Grand Maupertui): Planted in 1904, this plot yields a powerful and harmonious wine with a velvety purple robe. Aromas of black fruits (cherry, blackcurrant) and spices (liquorice, nutmeg) evolve towards candied notes with age. Perfect with grilled meats or morel mushroom sauces, it combines structure and finesse. Ageing: 40% new oak barrels.

Echezeaux Grand Cru (0.76 ha, Les Loachausses): This generous wine, sourced from an early-ripening plot, captivates with its ripe tannins and notes of violet and pepper. Its roundness and sensuality make it an ideal companion for slow-cooked dishes. Ageing: 30% new oak barrels.

Vosne-Romanée Les Barreaux (0.39 ha): An old vine from 1903 yields a deep wine with lively acidity and aromas of blackberry, blueberry and pepper. Austere in its youth, it gains in elegance with time, pairing perfectly with game. Ageing: 50% new oak barrels.

Chambolle-Musigny La Combe d'Orveau (1.1 ha): This ruby-coloured, elegant and floral wine (rose, redcurrant) rests on fine tannins and a peppery finish. Ideal with poultry or roasted red meats, it blossoms over a decade. Ageing: 30% new oak barrels.

Bourgogne Rouge (0.87 ha): A blend of four plots, this wine offers spiced notes of red fruits and a taut structure. To be enjoyed between 2 and 10 years with meats in sauce. Ageing: 30% new oak barrels.

Bourgogne Blanc (0.51 ha): Sourced from Chardonnay vines planted in 1994 and 2016, this honeyed wine with aromas of apple and pear pairs beautifully with fish and foie gras. Ageing: 30% new oak barrels and stainless steel vat.

Hautes Côtes de Nuits Rouge (0.73 ha): Early-ripening despite its altitude, this graceful wine with supple tannins and juicy red fruits pairs well with white meats. Ageing: 20% new oak barrels.

Hautes Côtes de Nuits Blanc « Marine » (1 ha): Mineral and iodine-tinged, this Chardonnay with notes of lemon and pineapple is perfect as an aperitif or with shellfish. Ageing: 30% new oak barrels.
