Wine 1990

This was the year of success across all vineyards: the 1990 vintage wine is exceptionally renowned! A truly great year for Bordeaux wine in 1990, where despite the heatwave, quantity went hand in hand with quality. Along with the years 1988 and 1989, 1990 completed a magical trilogy of very great sweet wines such as Yquem 1990, for example. In Burgundy 1990, the vintage is excellent. The harvest for red wines from the Côte de Nuits began on 17 September, but those who harvested later were rewarded with fuller, more corpulent and characterful red wines, endowed with strong ageing potential (the wines of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti). In white Burgundy 1990, the wines are of very high quality, notably for Chablis 1990 (a cooler sector), and in the Mâconnais (Pouilly-Fuissé 1990).

Our recommendations for buying a 1990 wine

The 1990 Grands Crus Classés of the Médoc often produced very fine, age-worthy wines, superior to the 1989 wines (Cos d'Estournel, Lafite Rothschild, Latour, Léoville Las Cases, Léoville Poyferré, Margaux, Montrose…). In Saint-Émilion 1990 and Pomerol 1990 (Angélus, Beauséjour Duffau-Lagarosse, Cheval Blanc, Lafleur, Pétrus, Tertre Roteboeuf, Troplong Mondot…) rank among the finest wines of the vintage. In the Graves (a lighter terroir), drought sometimes hindered the ripening of the grapes, but Haut Bailly, Haut-Brion, and La Mission Haut-Brion handled this vintage with great mastery. Thanks to later harvests than in 1989, the 1990 white Graves are a success. For the Sauternes 1990, concentration and richness remain the hallmarks of this vintage, with numerous outstanding achievements.

Champagne produced a great 1990 vintage, despite the April frost that affected more than 40% of the vineyards. The top-of-the-range cuvées are powerful and vinous (Bollinger Grande Année 1990), and benefit from excellent acidity (ensuring fine ageing potential). In the Rhône Valley, 1990 produced a remarkable vintage, particularly for the Côte-Rôtie 1990 and Hermitage (the sumptuous 1990 Hermitage La Chapelle by Jaboulet); in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the power of the 1990 wines is often compared to that of 1945, 1961, or 1978. There were also exceptional late-harvest wines in Condrieu! For the Loire Valley wines 1990, everything excels (white, red, dry, sparkling, sweet). Clos Rougeard produced exceptional cuvées! Caution, however, regarding yields in certain areas, as the Loire Valley exceeded 70 hl/ha (special authorisation), which is extraordinarily high! 1990 is also magnificent in Alsace, where the late season allowed for the production of excellent sweet wines as Vendanges Tardives and Sélection de Grains Nobles. Very fine Bandol wines, highly tannic and built for ageing.
