The Master of Blanc de Blancs
Champagne Pierre Gimonnet & Fils is an essential reference in Champagne, recognized for its expertise in crafting Blanc de Blancs Champagnes. Established in the heart of the prestigious Côte des Blancs, this family estate combines centuries-old traditions, innovation and respect for the terroir. Its Champagnes, synonymous with elegance, freshness and complexity, captivate enthusiasts the world over.
Since the 18th century, the Gimonnet family has passionately cultivated the vines of the Côte des Blancs. Originally, the harvests were delivered to the great Champagne houses. It was between the two World Wars that Pierre Gimonnet decided to vinify his own grapes, marking the beginning of a family adventure. From 1935, the estate's first price lists included still wines and Champagnes from emblematic plots such as "Les Roualles" in Cuis.
Michel Gimonnet, son of Pierre, revolutionized the art of winemaking from 1955. A pioneer, he introduced plot-by-plot vinification in stainless steel tanks, thus enhancing each lieu-dit of the estate. This meticulous work forged the unique identity of Champagnes Pierre Gimonnet & Fils.
Today, Olivier and Didier Gimonnet, sons of Michel, carry on the family legacy by combining ancestral expertise and modernity. Thanks to their passionate management, the estate is recognized as a pillar of Blanc de Blancs Champagnes.
Champagne Pierre Gimonnet & Fils spans 29.40 hectares exclusively planted with Chardonnay, the noble grape variety of the Côte des Blancs. This exceptional vineyard is composed of 13 hectares classified as Grands Crus and 16 hectares classified as Premiers Crus, spread across emblematic terroirs:
Cuis (1er Cru): The historic birthplace of the estate.
Chouilly (Grand Cru): Notably the lieu-dit "Montaigu", planted in 1951.
Cramant (Grand Cru): Inherited from the Larmandier family in 1958, with century-old vines.
Oger (Grand Cru): Acquired in 2005, renowned for its smoky minerality.
Vertus (1er Cru): Integrated in 2008, offering complementary diversity.
The estate's viticultural practices are based on a reasoned approach, promoting biodiversity and respecting the soils. The use of herbicides is strictly limited, and fertilization remains minimal to encourage roots to delve deep into the chalky subsoil.
Winemaking at Pierre Gimonnet & Fils is guided by a precise philosophy: preserving the natural expression of the terroirs. Each plot is vinified separately in stainless steel tanks to ensure full traceability and an in-depth understanding of each lieu-dit.
The key steps include:
Manual harvesting and careful pressing: The juices are separated according to their quality.
Natural cold settling: For 24 hours to preserve the purity of the aromas.
Plot-by-plot vinification: In neutral tanks to respect the identity of the terroirs.
Aging on fine lees without batonnage: Adapted to each vintage according to tastings.
The art of blending is at the heart of the Gimonnet style. Each cuvée is the result of a meticulous blend of "clear wines" from different years and plots, guaranteeing a consistent and unique signature.
