History of Bahans Haut-Brion

The history of Bahans Haut-Brion is intertwined with that of Château Haut-Brion, the doyen of Bordeaux's great classified growths. The estate was founded from 1525 by Jean de Pontac, who had the château built in 1549. Haut-Brion became the first Bordeaux vineyard to bear the name of its place of origin, at a time when wines were still sold anonymously. As early as 1660, this precious nectar graced the table of King Charles II of England, making it one of the oldest attested wine brands in the world. In 1855, the château was elevated to the rank of Premier Grand Cru Classé, the only wine from the Graves distinguished alongside the greatest classified growths of the Médoc.

The production of a second wine dates back to the 17th century. Its designation as Château Bahans Haut-Brion dates from the early 20th century, Bahans being the name of a château and of a family of former owners whose lands were incorporated into the vineyard. In 1935, American banker Clarence Dillon acquired the property, which remains in the hands of his descendants within Domaine Clarence Dillon. From the 2007 vintage onwards, this second wine was renamed Le Clarence de Haut-Brion in homage to Clarence Dillon, meaning that bottles bearing the Bahans name correspond to earlier vintages.

Terroirs and Vines of Bahans Haut-Brion

Bahans Haut-Brion draws its entire personality from the unique terroir of Château Haut-Brion, nestled at the gates of Bordeaux, in the communes of Pessac and Talence. The vineyard extends over some fifty hectares planted on remarkable gravel ridges. These deep gravel soils, laid down over the ages and offering excellent drainage, store the warmth of the day and release it to the vine, encouraging early ripening of the grapes. It is this mineral and slightly smoky signature that distinguishes the wines of the Pessac-Léognan appellation and has built the renown of the estate.

The blend brings together the great Bordeaux red grape varieties: Merlot, which contributes roundness and generosity, Cabernet Sauvignon, the guarantor of structure and longevity, Cabernet Franc, and a touch of Petit Verdot. Bahans Haut-Brion comes from exactly the same terroir as the fine wine, crafted from the estate's young vines and the lots that, after rigorous selection, are not retained for the first wine. This shared origin explains the great stylistic proximity between the two cuvées.

Winemaking at Bahans Haut-Brion

The winemaking expertise of Château Haut-Brion is legendary. As early as the 17th century, Arnaud III de Pontac perfected topping up, racking, and ageing in oak barrels on the estate. True to this pioneering spirit, the estate was one of the first, in the 1960s, to adopt stainless steel fermentation vats and to explore clonal selection of its grape varieties. Bahans Haut-Brion benefits from this same level of exacting standards, from manual and selective harvesting through to meticulous sorting of the crop.

Fermentation takes place under temperature control, after which the wine is aged in oak barrels for eighteen to twenty-two months, with a measured proportion of new wood — more discreet than for the fine wine. This rigorous winemaking process shapes a perfectly balanced second wine with silky tannins. Because it reaches its peak maturity more quickly than Château Haut-Brion, it can be enjoyed with great pleasure in its youth while still retaining a fine capacity for ageing.

The Cuvées of Bahans Haut-Brion

Bahans Haut-Brion (red, Pessac-Léognan appellation) is the emblematic cuvée sold under this name. A Merlot-dominant blend, complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and occasionally a hint of Petit Verdot, this second wine presents itself as a more accessible and earlier-maturing version of the château's fine wine. The proportion of grape varieties varies according to the vintage, shaped by terroir conditions and the choices made during selection.

On tasting, Bahans Haut-Brion reveals a ruby robe with deep reflections. The nose, seductive in character, blends ripe red fruits, tobacco, and earth, lifted by that mineral and slightly smoky note so characteristic of the graves terroir. On the palate, the wine is broad and remarkably refined, carried by integrated tannins and a persistent finish. This flattering balance makes it a great Bordeaux fine wine, ideal for discovering the Haut-Brion style at a more affordable price than the first wine.

Depending on the vintage, Bahans Haut-Brion can be enjoyed from five to ten years of age, with the finest years capable of resting in the cellar for one to two decades to gain in complexity. It accompanies with elegance red meats, game, roast lamb, duck, and aged cheeses. Enthusiasts seeking the most recent vintages will turn to its direct successor, Le Clarence de Haut-Brion, which has continued since 2007 the story of this second wine born from the same vineyard and the same winemaking philosophy.
