Domaine Mosse wines: buy at the best price

Domaine Mosse is one of the absolute references for natural wine in Anjou and throughout the Loire Valley. Founded in 1999 by Agnès and René Mosse, who trained under Thierry Puzelat and Christian Chaussard, this 15-hectare family estate is located in Saint-Lambert-du-Lattay, in the Anjou noir, across the communes of Saint-Lambert-du-Lattay, Beaulieu-sur-Layon and Savennières. Since 2018, their two sons, Sylvestre and Joseph, have taken over the reins with infectious energy and boundless creativity, while continuing to uphold the founding values: organic farming since 1999, natural fermentations, long aging in barrels and large oak casks, zero inputs. Since 2024, the cellar has been relocated to Saint-Aubin-de-Luigné, at La Bergerie. Refined and complex Chenin Blancs from schist terroirs, delicious Grolleaux, elegant Cabernet Franc, iconic natural sparkling wines produced as a négociant: Domaine Mosse offers around fifteen cuvées as sincere as they are vibrant, which have become essential for any lover of natural Loire wines.

History of Domaine Mosse

Agnès and René Mosse settled in Anjou in 1999, armed with training at the Montreuil-Bellay wine school and decisive internships with Thierry Puzelat and Christian Chaussard, two pioneering figures of natural wine in France. From the very beginning, they adopted organic farming and additive-free winemaking, convinced that terroir expresses itself best without artifice. Within a few years, the estate established itself as a national and international reference for natural Anjou wine, notably thanks to cuvées such as Moussamoussettes and Les Bonnes Blanches, which became cult classics. In 2006, a négociant structure was created to enrich the range with cuvées made from grapes purchased from trusted local growers.

In 2015, their sons Sylvestre and Joseph began working at the estate, following formative experiences abroad and alongside benchmark winemakers, notably Frédéric Cossard at Domaine de Chassorney in Burgundy and Bruno Duchêne in Banyuls. In 2018, they officially took over the reins, bringing fresh creative energy while scrupulously honouring their parents' legacy. In 2024, the relocation of the cellar to Saint-Aubin-de-Luigné marked a new chapter: more space, more serenity, in the bucolic setting of La Bergerie.

Terroirs and Vines of Domaine Mosse

The vineyard of Domaine Mosse extends over 15 hectares, spread across three communes of the Anjou noir: Saint-Lambert-du-Lattay, Beaulieu-sur-Layon and Savennières. These terroirs are located on the periphery of the Armorican Massif, on soils of slate schist, sandstone and clay, typical of the Anjou noir. The estate's iconic plots bear names steeped in history: Les Bonnes Blanches, an old Chenin vineyard on schist on the left bank of the Layon; Le Rouchefer, a Chenin plot adjoining Marie Besnard; and L'Arena, a Chenin terroir with a particularly mineral profile. The estate cultivates a very wide range of grape varieties: Chenin blanc (dominant), Cabernet Franc, Grolleau gris, Grolleau noir, Côt (Malbec), Gamay, Chardonnay, Sauvignon blanc and Pineau d'Aunis.

All the vines are farmed under certified organic agriculture since 1999, with treatments based on sulphur, copper and biodynamic preparations. The soils are worked mechanically to promote microbial life. Yields are naturally low, often below 20 hl/ha on the oldest plots. Harvesting is done by hand, with rigorous grape selection. In recent years, some plots have been partially worked with horses.

Winemaking at Domaine Mosse

The cellar philosophy of Domaine Mosse is that of living wine: no additives, no added sulphur on the vast majority of cuvées, fermentations with indigenous yeasts only. The whites are pressed directly as whole bunches, with a light settling before fermentation begins. Ageing takes place in used oak barrels and large casks, for varying lengths of time depending on the cuvée: from 6 to 18 months. Malolactic fermentations are natural, carried out without blocking. Bottling is done without filtration or fining for the estate's cuvées.

For the reds and rosés, maceration varies according to the grape varieties and the cuvées. Bisou is made from a blend of Grolleau gris, Grolleau noir and Gamay, vinified to preserve lightness and indulgence. The Cabernet Franc is aged longer in barrels to develop its structure. The Nova cuvée, made from Chenin with a long seven-month skin maceration, belongs to the orange wine style. The négociant cuvées (Moussamoussettes, Magic of Ju-Ju, Bangarang) are made from grapes purchased from trusted local growers, in the same natural spirit.

The cuvées of Domaine Mosse

Le Chenin (Vin de France) : A blended dry Chenin blanc cuvée, drawn from the estate's various schist plots. Vinified with indigenous yeasts and aged in used barrels. An honest and digestible nose of citrus and white flowers, a straight and mineral palate, with fine tension and a saline finish. The ideal entry point into the estate's Chenin wines.

La Joute (Vin de France) : A white cuvée from a blend of Chenin and Chardonnay, vinified and aged in barrels. It expresses a perfect balance between the tension of Chenin and the roundness of Chardonnay, with aromas of white fruits, flowers and a fresh minerality. A generous and accessible wine, crafted for immediate pleasure.

Le Rouchefer (Vin de France) : A single-plot Chenin blanc cuvée from the Le Rouchefer plot, aged for 12 months in used barrels. Assertive schist minerality, aromas of wet stone, lemon, apple and white flowers, a taut and long palate. A terroir-driven Chenin, precise and characterful.

Les Bonnes Blanches (Vin de France) : Iconic cuvée from a selection of grapes sourced in part from the oldest plot of Les Bonnes Blanches and the Marie Besnard plot, two neighbouring schist terroirs. 100% Chenin, 1.8 ha, yields of approximately 15 hl/ha. Aged in used barrels for 12 months. A complex and deep wine, with aromas of beeswax, honey, candied citrus and stone, with an ample palate and a long, mineral finish. One of the greatest dry Chenins of Anjou.

Arena (Vin de France) : A Chenin blanc cuvée from a particularly mineral and stony terroir, expressing remarkable saline tension and depth. A dry white wine, aged in barrels, with a pale gold colour, aromas of citrus and chalk, a vertical palate and a persistent finish. An exceptional Chenin, among the most sought-after of the estate.

Marie Bonne Fer (Vin de France) : A white cuvée from a selection of the finest barrels from the Marie Besnard and Rouchefer plots, in years when both terroirs are at their very best. A pure Chenin of incomparable class, with greater complexity and depth than the Rouchefer cuvée. A wine for ageing, produced in very small quantities.

Nova (Vin de France) : An original and atypical cuvée made from Chenin blanc with a long seven-month skin maceration, crafted in an orange wine style. Amber colour, an expressive nose of dried apricot, fresh almonds, wax and spices. A tannic and structured palate, with fine length and deep aromatic complexity. A Chenin orange wine of great personality, for lovers of skin-contact wines.

La Pirie (Vin de France) : A confidential white cuvée made from Chenin or a blend depending on the vintage, crafted in the spirit of the estate: lightness, freshness and terroir expression. A pleasure wine, accessible and fresh, perfect for sharing as an aperitif or alongside light cuisine.

Bisou (Vin de France) : A light and festive red cuvée, from a blend of Grolleau gris, Grolleau noir, Gamay and Chenin. A raspberry-coloured robe, an expressive nose of blackberries, cardamom and fresh figs, a light, fruity and tangy palate, with great indulgence. Also available in magnum under the name Gros Bisou. The estate's quintessential thirst-quenching red, to be served slightly chilled.

Gros Bisou (magnum) : The magnum version of Bisou, perfect for large gatherings. The same blend of Grolleau gris, Grolleau noir, Gamay and Chenin, the same lightness and the same indulgence, but with the added magic of ageing in a large format, which brings increased freshness and vivacity.

Cabernet Franc (Anjou Villages) : A red cuvée from Cabernet Franc grown on schist in the Anjou noir, aged in used barrels. Notes of small black fruits, violet and graphite, an elegant and fresh palate, with fine tannins and a mineral finish. A sincere Cabernet Franc, true to its slate terroir.

Le Jazz et la Java (Vin de France) : A red cuvée from a blend of Cabernet Franc and Grolleau noir, available notably in magnum. A wine of character and conviviality, fruity and spicy, with a fine structure and a generous finish. An evocative name that reflects the festive and laid-back spirit of the Mosse brothers.

Moussamoussettes (négociant, Vin de France) : An iconic natural sparkling rosé, the estate's best-known négociant cuvée, sourced each year from the same partner producer in the Val de Loire. A blend of 70% Grolleau noir, 20% Cabernet Franc and 10% Pineau d'Aunis. The Cabernet Franc is macerated for five days; the other grape varieties are pressed directly. Bottled with approximately 10 g of residual sugar, with no added sulphur. Lively bubbles, a nose of red fruits, citrus (blood orange, grapefruit) and soft spices, a fresh and slightly festive palate. The estate's most eagerly awaited and most widely shared cuvée, perfect as an aperitif or at any hour.

Magic of Ju-Ju (négociant, Vin de France) : An iconic white négociant cuvée, made from a blend of Chenin and Sauvignon blanc purchased from local Anjou producers. A dry white wine with herbaceous and very fresh aromas, lively tension and a direct, mouth-watering palate. An accessible and immediately indulgent cuvée, perfect for introducing newcomers to the Mosse style.

Bangarang (négociant, Vin de France) : A red or rosé négociant cuvée depending on the vintage, made from grapes purchased from trusted local Anjou growers. A wine of immediate pleasure, fruity and indulgent, crafted in the same natural spirit as all the estate's cuvées. The name is borrowed from Steven Spielberg's film Hook, in the playful and pop spirit of Sylvestre and Joseph.
