Champagne Val Frison, in the Côte des Bar: beautiful Grower Champagnes
The VAL FRISON estate is located in the Côte des Bar, on the hillsides of Ville sur Arce, a few kilometers southeast of Troyes. Val Frison is the diminutive of Valérie Frison, who took over the estate alone where she worked with her spouse (Thierry Demarne), since the 2012 vintage (previously, the estate was called DEMARNE FRISON).
Valérie Frison now works with her son, and she has a beautiful 6-hectare vineyard, 93% Pinot Noir and only 7% Chardonnay, to exercise her talents as a winemaker. Only part of the vineyard is vinified under the Val Frison label, as the rest goes to the local cooperative Chassenay d'Arce. The soils are predominantly Kimmeridgian (similar to those of Chablis), with a plot of Portlandian soil that gives rise to a cuvée named Portlandia. The Val Frison estate is organically farmed and has been certified since 2010, with practices inspired by biodynamics. Great care is taken in the vineyard in order to harvest grapes of fine ripeness. Assisted in his winemaking by the house of Vouet et Sorbée when she started out in 2007, Valérie now handles this task entirely on her own — and with great success. The wines are aged for approximately 9 months in oak barrels, then the Champagnes mature on laths with crown cap sealing. Each cuvée comes from a single harvest, from the same year, but is not claimed as a vintage Champagne, since a vintage Champagne must age for 36 months on laths. The winemaking is natural, with no dosage liqueur added at disgorgement. The still wines are vinified parcel by parcel, in barrel, with or without sulphur depending on the needs, separating the cuvée from the tailles (second pressings) during ageing. They are then blended to produce essentially 2 cuvées of Champagne blanc named "Goustan" and "Lalore". The first is a Blanc de Noirs, and the second a Blanc de Blancs, even though Chardonnay accounts for only 7% of the total grape varieties planted at Val Frison. The wines are neither fined nor filtered, and remain very well-balanced and highly expressive. The "Goustan" cuvée, Blanc de Noirs Brut Nature, is a very singular Champagne that demonstrates the appeal and splendour of a new Côte des Bar, whose productions from the finest estates such as Val Frison are brimming with purity, naturalness and energy. The "Lalore" cuvée, made from 100% Chardonnay and aged in wood, displays a very chalky nose and a dense, creamy, very straight palate, in the register of purity and minerality. The finish is accompanied by very lovely bitters, and it is a clear success. Val Frison — Champagnes to discover without delay.
