Frequently Asked Questions

Château Gruaud Larose has been a 2nd Grand Cru Classé of Saint-Julien since the famous 1855 classification, a recognition that reflects the constant excellence of this estate over the centuries. Located at the heart of the Saint-Julien appellation, it benefits from an exceptional terroir composed primarily of deep Garonne gravels, ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon. This prestigious classification, combined with rigorous viticulture and careful ageing in oak barrels, explains the château's worldwide reputation and its place among the essential references of the Médoc.

Château Gruaud Larose crafts its grand red wine from a blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, which generally represents between 55 and 65% of the grape varieties, depending on the vintage. It is complemented by Merlot, which brings roundness and fruitiness, along with smaller proportions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. This blend, typical of Saint-Julien, gives the wine its assertive tannic structure, its excellent ageing potential, and its complex aromas of dark fruits, cedar and spices that develop fully after several years of cellaring.

The grand vin of Château Gruaud Larose represents the most rigorous selection of the finest plots and most accomplished vats of the estate. The second wine, called Le Sarget de Gruaud Larose, is produced from younger vines or lots that do not reach the level of excellence required for the grand vin. It nonetheless offers a fine introduction to the château's style: more approachable in its youth, less structured, it allows you to discover the aromatic characteristics and Saint-Julien typicity that are characteristic of Gruaud Larose, at a more affordable price and with an earlier drinking window.

Among the most remarkable vintages of Château Gruaud Larose, lovers of great Bordeaux wines readily mention 1982, considered a legendary year for the entire Médoc, as well as 1986, 1990 and 2000, which perfectly illustrate the structured power and tannic elegance characteristic of the estate. Further back, the 1961 and 1966 vintages remain historical benchmarks for enthusiasts of old bottles. These great years bear witness to the exceptional ability of Gruaud Larose wines to stand the test of time with grace.

Château Gruaud Larose stands out within the Saint-Julien appellation for a style that is both powerful and full-bodied, often described as one of the most generous and complete wines on the Left Bank. Where some Saint-Julien wines rely on finesse and airy elegance, Gruaud Larose distinguishes itself through a dense, concentrated structure, a beautiful fruity concentration, and firm tannins that allow for extended ageing. This assertive personality, the result of a clay-gravel terroir and carefully mastered grape varieties, makes it an outstanding wine for cellaring, capable of fully revealing itself after ten to twenty years in the cellar.

To fully enjoy a bottle of Château Gruaud Larose, storing it in a cellar at a constant temperature, ideally between 12 and 14°C, away from light and vibrations, is essential. Given the wine's tannic structure, it is recommended to wait a minimum of 8 to 12 years after the harvest before opening recent vintages. At the time of serving, decanting for one to two hours will allow the wine to open up and release its aromas. Serve between 17 and 18°C in a large balloon glass to fully express the complexity of this exceptional Bordeaux.

History of Château Gruaud Larose

Founded in 1725 by Joseph Stanislas Gruaud, Château Gruaud Larose has a rich history, marked by the succession of several families and many eventful episodes. Originally, the estate bore the name Fond Bedeau and was already producing a highly regarded wine. Over the years, the estate expanded under the stewardship of the Gruaud descendants. In 1778, the knight Joseph Sébastien de Larose, husband of Joseph Gruaud's granddaughter, took over the property and added his name to it.

In 1812, the estate was put up for auction due to the lack of direct heirs, and passed into the hands of several families, including the Sarget and Balguerie families, who temporarily divided the estate into two distinct entities. It was not until 1935 that Désiré Cordier reunified the entire vineyard, a period marked by major reinvestments in the modernisation of the infrastructure. In 1997, the château was acquired by the Merlaut family, under the direction of Jacques Merlaut, whose son Jean now manages the estate. Gruaud Larose's motto, "Le roi des vins, le vin des rois", reflects the pursuit of excellence that has driven the property for several centuries.

The 1928 vintage of Château Gruaud Larose received a score of 97/100 from Robert Parker, while 1961, 1982, 1945 and 2020 follow closely with 96/100, illustrating the longevity and depth of this characterful Saint-Julien.

Terroirs and Vines of Château Gruaud Larose

The Gruaud Larose vineyard covers 82 hectares on the left bank, almost entirely gathered around the château, a rarity in the Médoc region. This vineyard sits on a plateau of Quaternary Garonne gravels, an exceptional soil that promotes the flourishing of the traditional Médoc grape varieties. The soil composition, a blend of quartz, gravel, clay and sand, offers a unique terroir where the vines, averaging 40 to 46 years of age, draw the richness of their character.

The grape variety composition of the estate reflects the predominance of Cabernet Sauvignon (61%), combined with Merlot (29%), Cabernet Franc (7%) and Petit Verdot (3%). Cabernet Sauvignon dominates, lending the wines their structure and capacity to age, while Merlot contributes suppleness and immediate charm. The estate aims to increase the proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon to 70% in the coming years in order to optimise the quality of its wines.

Since the 2019 vintage, Gruaud Larose has embarked on its conversion to organic farming, resulting in official certification for the 2022 vintage. The estate also practices biodynamic techniques, promoting biodiversity within its vineyards, for example through the introduction of hedgerows, winter grazing by sheep, as well as the installation of beehives and bat boxes. Everything is done to maintain a balanced ecosystem that is respectful of the environment.

Winemaking at Château Gruaud Larose

The winemaking process at Gruaud Larose combines traditional expertise and innovation. The harvest is carried out manually, ensuring a rigorous selection of grapes, plot by plot. Vinification then takes place in thermo-regulated tanks made of wood and cement, allowing precise control of fermentation temperatures. Maceration lasts between 20 and 30 days, ensuring optimal extraction of tannins and aromas.

The ageing of the wines is a crucial step at Gruaud Larose. The wines spend 18 months in French oak barrels, of which 80% new barrels for the fine wine, imparting to the wine a solid tannic structure and complex aromas of wood and vanilla. The guidance of renowned oenologist Éric Boissenot, a specialist of the Médoc, and technical director Virginie Sallette, ensures meticulous oversight at every stage of the winemaking process, guaranteeing wines of exceptional quality.

The Cuvées of Château Gruaud Larose

Château Gruaud Larose offers two main cuvées, each reflecting a distinct style while sharing the same commitment to quality.

Château Gruaud Larose - The Fine Wine

The fine wine of Gruaud Larose, produced each year in quantities of between 250,000 and 300,000 bottles, is the perfect expression of the Saint-Julien appellation. This wine is often described as being among the most powerful and structured of the appellation. Endowed with great longevity, it is distinguished by intense aromas of dark fruits, leather, spices and precious wood. On the palate, the texture is velvety and the tannic structure is impressive. This wine combines power and finesse, and certain vintages can rival the first classified growths. It is advisable to allow it to age so that its complex aromas can blend harmoniously.

Sarget de Gruaud Larose - The Second Wine

Le Sarget de Gruaud Larose, produced since 1979, is the estate's second wine. It is crafted from plots of younger vines or batches not retained for the fine wine. The grape blend of this cuvée is slightly different, with 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 7% Petit Verdot. The winemaking process remains traditional, with a maceration of 20 to 30 days and ageing in barrels for 14 months, of which only 15% new oak.

This wine is characterised by supple tannins and a round palate, approachable from an early age. With an annual production of approximately 150,000 bottles, Sarget de Gruaud Larose is a pleasurable wine, perfect for earlier drinking, yet also offering excellent ageing potential.

Saint-Julien, a flagship appellation of the Médoc in Bordeaux, is renowned for its red wines of great finesse and longevity. Certain vintages stand out particularly for their exceptional quality, offering powerful, elegant and complex wines. Among the finest vintages, one finds years such as 1975, 1982, 1985, 1986, 1989, and 1990, which are true benchmarks for lovers of wines with ageing potential. More recent years are no exception, with landmark vintages such as 1995, 1996, 2000, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, all acclaimed for their balance and ageing potential. The years 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020 also stand out for their richness and complexity, continuing to make Saint-Julien an essential reference in the world of wine.

The Second Classified Growths of 1855 represent a prestigious category, bringing together iconic estates that often rival the first growths in quality. Among them, discover Château Brane-Cantenac and Château Durfort-Vivens, both located in Margaux, as well as Château Lascombes, Château Rauzan-Ségla and Château Rauzan-Gassies. In Saint-Julien, enthusiasts will appreciate the wines of Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, Château Léoville Las Cases, Château Gruaud Larose, and the celebrated Château Léoville Poyferré and Château Léoville Barton. Do not miss Château Cos d'Estournel and Château Montrose in Saint-Estèphe, as well as the essential Château Pichon Longueville Baron and Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande in Pauillac

Château Gruaud Larose is an essential estate for lovers of great Bordeaux wines. With a rich history, exceptional terroir and a resolute commitment to sustainable viticultural practices, this château produces wines of outstanding quality, in both power and elegance. Whether you choose the fine wine or the second wine, every bottle of Gruaud Larose tells the story of centuries-old expertise, a unique terroir, and a passion for excellence. Through its efforts in organic and biodynamic farming, Gruaud Larose continues to evolve while remaining true to its heritage.
