Wines from Domaine Clape: buy at the best price

The historic buildings of Domaine Auguste Clape date back to the 19th century, and when in 1925 Antoinette Frugier inherited the estate, the wines were still only sold to négociants. Her daughter Ariette continued her mother's work in 1949 alongside her husband Auguste Clape, and the estate was then only 4 hectares, but its reputation grew steadily from the 1970s onwards. Pierre Clape, their son, became involved in the property from 1988, continuing the reasoned approach to viticulture initiated by his father. The vines are treated with sulphur and copper. In 2002, his son Olivier joined Domaine Auguste Clape.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Auguste Clape estate was founded in the 19th century, but it was in 1949 that Auguste Clape and his wife Ariette took over the reins with only 4 hectares of vines. Visionaries, they created in 1955 the first wine market in Cornas and began bottling their production themselves, a revolutionary approach at a time when bulk sales were the norm. From 1988, son Pierre joined the estate, drawing on experience gained at Tempier and Vieux Télégraphe, followed in 2002 by his own son Olivier. This family continuity, combined with a traditional and uncompromising winemaking philosophy, has elevated Auguste Clape to the rank of founding estate of the identity of Cornas.

The estate advocates simple vinifications with whole clusters and long aging in barrels from several wines. The aging extends over 12 to 24 months in old oval foudres of 1,000 litres, aged 30 to 50 years, promoting a gentle and balanced oxidation. No new wood is used, and intervention in the cellar remains minimalist. This artisanal approach preserves the authenticity of the Cornas terroir and gives the wines a remarkable aging potential.

The Auguste Clape estate produces approximately 35,000 bottles per year, spread across a limited range. The Cornas Classique, the flagship cuvée, is a blend of 5 to 6 plots of old vines aged 40 to 90 years, sourced from prestigious sites such as Reynards, La Côte and Sabarotte. The estate also offers a Cornas Renaissance, a Côtes du Rhône, a Vin des Amis and a white Saint-Péray. Each cuvée reflects a different balance between power and finesse, allowing you to explore the Clape signature at varying levels of complexity and ageing potential.

The Auguste Clape estate covers nearly 9 hectares, with 85% red wines made from Syrah under the Cornas appellation, and 15% white wines with Marsanne (12%) and Roussanne (3%) under the Saint-Péray appellation. This dual identity — powerful red wines from steep granitic terroirs and elegant whites — makes the estate one of the most complete houses in the northern Rhône Valley.

The wines of Domaine Auguste Clape are renowned for their exceptional aging potential. This approach, without superfluous intervention, produces sober, complex wines capable of aging for 15 to 25 years. Iconic vintages such as 1989 and 1990 have demonstrated that the finest bottles can evolve over several decades, developing profiles of great complexity, with notes of candied dark fruits, leather, spices, and undergrowth.

For a perfect pairing, match the Cornas Auguste Clape with red meat dishes in sauce, such as a roast beef or a wild boar stew. The rich and spicy flavours of the wine also harmonise beautifully with duck with olives or a cassoulet, as well as with aged cheeses such as Saint-Nectaire or Bleu d'Auvergne. Ideally serve it between 16 and 18°C, and do not hesitate to decant it one hour before serving to allow it to fully express itself.

History of Domaine Auguste Clape

The history of Domaine Auguste Clape dates back to the early 19th century, when the historic buildings were constructed around arable plots by the Frugier farming family. Originally a mixed-farming operation combining vines and cereals, the estate suffered a severe blow with the arrival of phylloxera in 1865, which devastated the vineyard, followed by the decline brought on by the First World War. Henri Frugier tentatively replanted 2 hectares in 1890, but cereal crops, being more profitable, took precedence. In 1925, Antoinette Frugier inherited the property and relaunched bulk wine production, sold to négociants in Saint-Péray and restaurants in Valence.

It was in 1949 that Ariette Frugier, Antoinette's daughter, and her husband Auguste Clape took over the reins with just 4 hectares of vines. Visionaries, they created in 1955, together with neighbours, the first wine market in Cornas, marking the beginning of estate bottling — a revolution at a time when most producers sold in bulk. Exports opened as early as 1970 to England and the United States, enabling investment in 1975 in machinery for planting on hillsides and gradually abandoning other crops. Pierre-Marie Clape joined the estate in 1988, enriched by his experiences at Domaine Tempier and Vieux Télégraphe, initiating a reasoned approach to viticulture using sulphur and copper. His son Olivier joined the team in 2002, following internships in Napa Valley, Australia, and New Zealand. Auguste passed away in 2018 at the age of 93, and Pierre-Marie tragically left us in June 2025 at 74, leaving Olivier to carry this family legacy alone — a symbol of the renaissance of Cornas.

Terroirs and Vines of Domaine Auguste Clape

The terroirs of Domaine Auguste Clape are a granitic jewel, nestled on the steep slopes of Cornas, with gradients of up to 50–60% making any mechanical work impossible — everything is done by hand, for maximum respect of the soil. The vines, with an average age of 45 years (some centenary), extend across iconic plots such as Reynards, La Côte, Geynale, Tézier, Petite Côte, Les Mazards, Patou, Pied La Vigne, Chaillot, and Sabarotte (acquired from Noël Verset). These soils of sandy granitic arènes, sometimes mixed with calcareous scree or clay, offer ideal drainage and an optimal south-south-east exposure to the Rhône Valley sun.

The estate cultivates primarily Syrah, with a small plot of less than one hectare of white varieties in Saint-Péray (Marsanne at 80–90%, complemented by 10–20% Roussanne), on well-draining hillside slopes. Adopting a bio-reasoned approach to viticulture — without certification but with minimal doses of sulphur and copper (1–1.5 kg/ha/year), homeopathic organic amendments, and work carried out by mule or winch — the vines draw from this substrate a vibrant minerality, a textured richness, and a natural spice. This unique terroir lends the wines a rare authenticity, making Domaine Auguste Clape a benchmark reference.

Winemaking at Domaine Auguste Clape

Winemaking at Domaine Auguste Clape is an ode to tradition — minimalist and plot-by-plot — to preserve the fruit and the expression of the terroir. Manual harvesting, with rigorous sorting in the vineyard, leads to whole-cluster fermentations (100%, for fine tannins and an elegant structure), with a light initial treading and indigenous yeasts only. Macerations last 6–7 days in concrete or cement tanks, followed by 3–7 days of post-fermentation, and malolactic fermentations are staggered by one to two months.

The ageing, long and unhurried, extends over 12 to 24 months in old oval large oak barrels of 1,000 L (30–50 years old, neutral for gentle and balanced oxidation), sometimes complemented by an egg-shaped cement tank or a terracotta jar for the whites. No new wood, no excessive press wine — simply a fining with egg white and moderate sulphuring (approximately 50 mg/L total). This approach, free of superfluous intervention, produces wines that are restrained, complex, and capable of ageing for 15–25 years, defying trends in favour of timeless purity.

The Cuvées of Domaine Auguste Clape

Domaine Auguste Clape excels across a focused range of cuvées, each a concentrated expression of terroir, producing approximately 35,000 bottles per year.

Cornas Classique: The flagship cuvée, a blend from 5–6 plots of old vines (40–90 years old, some even centenary, including the original Petite Syrah) from prestigious sites such as Reynards, La Côte, and Sabarotte. Vinified as whole clusters and aged 18–24 months in old large oak barrels, it offers deep opacity, aromas of black berries, olive, violet, smoke, and spice, with dense tannins that soften into velvet after 10–15 years. Powerful yet elegant, rated>95/100 by critics, it is the very essence of Cornas for exceptional cellaring.

Cornas Renaissance: From younger vines (12–30 years old) on the finest hillsides and lower slopes, this relatively entry-level cuvée (yet of remarkable finesse) ferments as whole clusters and matures for 23 months in large oak barrels. More approachable in its youth, with notes of dark fruits, dried herbs, and granitic minerality, it evolves over 10–20 years, revealing a velvety complexity — perfect for discovering the Clape style without waiting.

Le Vin des Amis: A convivial red, a blend of young Syrah from Cornas and neighbouring plots, for a fruity and immediately approachable style. Aged in large oak barrels, it charms with its vitality, dark berry fruit, and balance — ideal for everyday wine drinking with a moderate ageing potential.

Côtes-du-Rhône: 100% Syrah from 30–120-year-old vines near Saint-Péray and declassified from Cornas, fermented as whole clusters and aged in large oak barrels. Elegant and versatile, with accents of pepper, dark fruits, and smoke, it offers an irresistible quality-to-price ratio for lovers of affordable Rhône wines.

Saint-Péray: The confidential gem — a rare white (less than one hectare) of Marsanne (80–90%) and Roussanne (10–20%), on granite and clay. Vinified in cement tanks with partial malolactic fermentation and aged for 10 months in large oak barrels, an egg-shaped tank, or a jar, it unfolds with floral depth, pear, honey, and mineral spice, with a textured richness and a chalky vibration. Of great stature, akin to a white Hermitage, for an exceptional tasting experience after 5–10 years.
