Frequently Asked Questions

The Loire Valley is one of the most diverse wine regions in France, with a remarkably varied range of grape varieties. For whites, Muscadet is based on Melon de Bourgogne, while Chenin Blanc reigns supreme in the appellations of Anjou and Touraine, giving birth to Vouvray, Savennières, and the great sweet wines of Coteaux du Layon. Sauvignon Blanc, meanwhile, expresses itself brilliantly in Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé. On the red side, Cabernet Franc is the king grape variety, particularly in the appellations of Chinon, Bourgueil, and Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil, offering wines that are both fruity and elegant.

The Loire Valley is a land of predilection for lovers of exceptional dry white wines. Among the most sought-after appellations, Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé captivate with their mineral and aromatic Sauvignon Blancs. Savennières, in Anjou, produces Chenin Blancs of rare complexity, often considered among the greatest dry whites in France. Muscadet Sèvre et Maine sur Lie, for its part, offers a fresher, more saline profile, ideal as an accompaniment to seafood. Each appellation reflects the unique geological diversity of this long royal river.

The Loire vineyard is divided into four major zones with distinct identities. The Pays Nantais, in the west, is the kingdom of Muscadet and its communal crus with marine accents. Anjou-Saumur produces an impressive range spanning from dry and sweet whites made from Chenin Blanc to the elegant reds of Saumur-Champigny, as well as the famous Rosé d'Anjou. Touraine, at the heart of the region, is the stronghold of Cabernet Franc with Chinon, Bourgueil and Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil, but also remarkable whites from Vouvray and Montlouis-sur-Loire. Finally, the Centre-Loire concentrates the most prestigious Sauvignon Blanc appellations: Sancerre, Pouilly-Fumé, Menetou-Salon and Quincy.

Contrary to popular belief, many Loire Valley wines are built for long aging. The great Chenin Blancs, whether a Savennières, a Quarts de Chaume, or a Bonnezeaux, can age for several decades, developing complex aromas of beeswax, white truffle, and candied fruit. The reds from Chinon made from old-vine Cabernet Franc also gain in depth and finesse over time. Even some Muscadets from the "Crus Communaux" range reveal themselves after five to ten years of cellaring.

These two flagship appellations of the Centre-Loire share Sauvignon Blanc as their sole grape variety, but their terroirs give them very distinct characters. Sancerre is distinguished by its three soil types — fossiliferous limestone (caillottes), clay-limestone (terres blanches), and flint — which bring tension, minerality, and fresh fruitiness. Pouilly-Fumé, produced on the opposite bank of the Loire, is more markedly influenced by flint and Kimmeridgian limestone soils, offering that characteristic smoky character and a generally rounder texture.

Chenin Blanc, locally known as Pineau de la Loire, is a grape variety of exceptional versatility and longevity. Its naturally high acidity allows it to evolve over decades, developing a fascinating aromatic complexity: beeswax, quince, acacia, mushrooms, and white truffle notes in older vintages. Its ability to express itself in every style — taut dry wine, delicate off-dry, opulent medium-sweet, botrytised dessert wine, or sparkling — is unique among the great white grape varieties. The finest Chenins from Savennières or Coteaux du Layon regularly rank among the most sought-after white wines by discerning international collectors.

The history of the Loire vineyard

The history of the Loire Valley vineyard dates back to Antiquity and has undergone a rich and complex evolution over the centuries. The Romans introduced the vine around the 1st century BC. They recognized the viticultural potential of the Loire and began planting vines along the eponymous river. During the Middle Ages, viticulture developed under the influence of monks and abbeys. During the Renaissance, Loire Valley wines continued to gain in reputation, particularly thanks to the Châteaux de la Loire where they were consumed by the nobility and royal courts.

The popularity of Loire Valley wines persisted until the 18th century, with increased production and international distribution. However, viticulture was affected by vine disease epidemics, such as phylloxera at the end of the 19th century, which caused considerable losses in vineyards. In the 20th century, after the ravages of diseases and wars, viticulture in the Loire Valley was rebuilt with a greater focus on quality and the diversification of wine styles.

Today, the Loire Valley is recognized for its varied range of wines, from dry and sweet whites to fruity reds and elegant sparkling wines. Centuries-old winemaking traditions are combined with modern techniques to produce wines that reflect both the past and the innovation of the region, with an emphasis on sustainable and organic practices.

The Loire Valley: its sub-regions and appellations

The Loire Valley is a diverse wine region, with different sub-regions producing a variety of wines depending on their terroirs, grape varieties, and winemaking traditions.

Auvergne wines

The Auvergne region and its Côtes d'Auvergne wines are historically less well-known than wines from other French wine regions. However, very dynamic in recent years with volcanic wines from Gamay, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and other grape varieties, it is a region to watch closely. We recommend the wines of Patrick Bouju from Domaine de la Bohème.

Loire Valley wines from the Centre-Loire

This region located less than 100km south-west of Chablis is characterized by limestone soils and a continental climate that influence the style of wines produced. Here are some of the most important appellations in the Centre-Loire wine region:

  • Sancerre: Dry white wine made from Sauvignon Blanc. Renowned for its elegance and mineral character. Micro production of Pinot Noir red Sancerre.
  • Pouilly-Fumé: Dry white wine made from Sauvignon Blanc. Often characterized by mineral aromas, flint and sometimes oaky notes on the Blanc Fumé.
  • Menetou-Salon: Dry white wine or red wine.

Loire Valley wines from Touraine

With a more oceanic climate, the wine region of Touraine extends around Tours, between Saumur and Orléans, and is known for its diversity of grape varieties and wine styles, ranging from white wines to red wines, as well as rosés and sparkling wines.

On the white wine side:

  • Vouvray: Produced from the Chenin Blanc grape variety, Vouvray offers a range of styles, from dry to sweet, including sparkling. The wines are characterized by their lively acidity and aromas of white fruits, citrus and honey.
  • Montlouis-sur-Loire: Also produced from Chenin Blanc, the wines of Montlouis-sur-Loire are often dry or off-dry, but also exist in sweet styles.

On the red wine side:

  • Chinon: The Chinon appellation is famous for its red wines made from Cabernet Franc. These wines can be light and fruity, or more complex and structured depending on the terroir and winemaking practices.
  • Bourgueil and Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil: Also produced from Cabernet Franc, Bourgueil offers elegant red wines that are often fuller-bodied, with notes of red fruits and good acidity.

Touraine is renowned for its authentic and accessible wines, as well as for its variety of terroirs and grape varieties. The climate influences the fresh and balanced character of its wines.

Loire Valley wines from Anjou and Saumur

The wine region of Anjou and Saumur, around Angers and Saumur, is renowned for its varied production of white, red, and rosé wines as well as sparkling wines. But it is above all its sweet white wines and dessert wines that have shaped its reputation throughout history.

On the white wine side:

  • Anjou Blanc and Saumur Blanc: The white wines of Anjou and Saumur are produced from grape varieties such as Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon. They can vary in terms of style.
  • Savennières: Produced from the Chenin Blanc grape variety, Savennières is a dry or medium-sweet white wine characterized by its complexity, minerality, and aging potential.
  • Coteaux du Layon: This appellation is famous for its sweet and luscious white wines produced from Chenin Blanc. They offer a sweetness balanced by a lively acidity.
  • Quarts de Chaume and Bonnezeaux: Appellations of the Coteaux du Layon producing exceptional sweet wines, often compared to the great sweet wines of Sauternes.

On the red and rosé wine side:

  • Anjou Rouge: The red wines of Anjou are produced from grape varieties such as Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Grolleau. They can be fruity and supple, or more structured depending on the grape variety and the terroir.
  • Saumur Champigny and Saumur: Also made from Cabernet Franc, the red wines of Saumur Champigny and Saumur are often elegant and can display notes of red fruits and spices.
  • Anjou and Saumur Rosés: These appellations produce fruity rosé wines, often produced from grape varieties such as Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon (such as Cabernet d'Anjou).

Loire Valley wines from the Pays Nantais

The Pays Nantais wine region is located at the western tip of the Loire around Nantes, and it is recognized for its production of fresh and refreshing white wines due to the oceanic climate and the terroir comprising schist, granite, and clay soils. Among the flagship appellations of the Pays Nantais, you will find:

  • Muscadet: The best-known appellation in the region, Muscadet produces dry and light white wines from the Melon de Bourgogne grape variety. Muscadet wines are appreciated for their lively acidity, mineral character, and citrus aromas.
  • Muscadet Sèvre et Maine: This appellation is located in the heart of the Pays Nantais and produces superior quality Muscadet wines. Muscadet Sèvre et Maine wines are often aged on lees, which gives them a richer texture and more complex flavors.
  • Muscadet Coteaux de la Loire: Another appellation producing Muscadet wines.

The greatest Loire Valley vintages

The Loire Valley has produced many exceptional vintages over the decades. Here are some of the most notable vintages:

Loire White Vintages
