History of Domaine Joseph Roty

The history of Domaine Joseph Roty is deeply rooted in the terroir of Gevrey-Chambertin, where the Roty family has cultivated vines since 1710, during the reign of Louis XIV. Eleven generations have followed, owning their vineyards since 1817 and making this one of the Côte de Nuits’ oldest winemaking families. In the 1960s, Joseph Roty founded the estate bearing his name from vines inherited from his grandfather, creating a distinctive style that would soon gain a cult following among discerning wine lovers.

After his death in 2008, his two sons, Philippe and Pierre-Jean, took over the estate together. Philippe’s untimely death in 2015 left Pierre-Jean solely in charge, running it with the same rigor and legendary discretion as his father. The estate, which exports more than 80% of its production, shuns flashy publicity but enjoys considerable international renown, regularly earning praise from the Parker guide, Vinous, Burghound, and critics worldwide.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Domaine Joseph Roty

The vineyards of Domaine Joseph Roty cover approximately 12 hectares across the communes of Gevrey-Chambertin and Marsannay-la-Côte, in the heart of Burgundy’s prestigious Côte de Nuits. The estate is especially distinguished by its old vines, which average around 65 years of age, with some plots reaching 120 years or more. Its most emblematic vines, those of Charmes-Chambertin Très Vieilles Vignes, were planted in 1881: approximately 60% of the original vines still survive today, producing grapes of remarkable concentration and complexity.

The clay-limestone soils typical of the Côte de Nuits, combined with favorable exposures, provide an exceptional terroir for Pinot Noir, the estate’s flagship grape. The vines are grown according to ecological principles, without chemical inputs, with short pruning and a low-intervention approach. Yields are deliberately kept very low to ensure concentrated berries, and harvests are intentionally late to achieve optimal grape ripeness—a hallmark of the estate’s philosophy.

Winemaking at Domaine Joseph Roty

Winemaking at Domaine Joseph Roty follows a precise, time-honored protocol passed down through the generations. On arrival at the winery, the grapes are rigorously sorted to retain only the finest berries, then completely destemmed (100% destemming). Cold maceration precedes a long, three-week fermentation and maceration in concrete vats at a controlled temperature (below 30°C), allowing patient, measured extraction of aromas, color, and tannins.

The wines are aged in oak barrels for 15 to 18 months, with the proportion of new oak increasing according to the cuvée’s rank: around 50% for village wines, 60 to 70% for wines from named vineyard sites, and up to 100% for Grands Crus. This approach, sometimes considered generous in its use of oak, gives the wines an opulent aromatic structure that integrates beautifully after a few years of cellaring. The result: dense, fleshy wines that are both powerful and sensual, with magnificent potential to evolve.

The Cuvées of Domaine Joseph Roty

The Bourgogne Pinot Blanc is a rarity from the estate, made from a grape variety unusual for the Côte de Nuits. Lively, floral, and mineral, it offers a pure, refreshing expression that showcases the diversity of the Roty vineyards.

The Bourgogne Rouge, from young Pinot Noir vines in Marsannay, delights with its freshness, vibrant fruit, and silky texture. An excellent introduction to the world of Roty.

The Coteaux Bourguignons, made from 100% Pinot Noir since 2012 (replacing the former Bourgogne Grand Ordinaire appellation), is an airy, fragrant wine, vibrant with energy and wonderfully appealing.

The red Marsannay stands out for its deep color and rich, complex nose of sour cherry, blackcurrant, vanilla, and sweet spices. The palate is generous and juicy, supported by tannins enveloped in fruit, with a flavorful, lingering finish.

The Marsannay Cuvée de Boivin comes from a prized named vineyard site within the appellation. It develops notes of spice, red fruit, and a hint of chocolate, with a dense, silky texture that reflects the Roty finesse brought to Marsannay.

The Marsannay Clos de Jeu offers a Pinot Noir of great purity, more linear and mineral, with fine tannic structure and an aromatic brilliance that places this cuvée among the appellation’s most precise expressions.

The village-level Gevrey-Chambertin is a superb expression of the appellation, offering aromas of cherry, blackcurrant, and smoked meat. The palate is fleshy, with ripe tannins and a savory finish, and shows excellent aging potential.

The Gevrey-Chambertin Cuvée de la Brunelle, from an emblematic named vineyard site, is spicy, sensual, and silky, scented with violet and tobacco, with a luscious texture and melting tannins. A delicious, inviting cuvée.

The Gevrey-Chambertin Cuvée du Clos Prieur Bas reveals a deep, floral nose and a generous, mouth-filling, flavorful palate with superb complexity. One of the estate’s finest village-level expressions, with remarkable structure.

The Gevrey-Chambertin Cuvée de Champs-Chenys, from vines planted in 1934 directly alongside the Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, offers aromas of cherry, plum, licorice, spice, and peony. The generous, fleshy palate has supple tannins and a saline finish.

The Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Fontenys, from a plot neighboring the Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru, produces a wine with substantial structure, more earthy and robust in character, with magnificent depth and excellent aging potential.

The Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru embodies elegance and distinction in their purest form, with an exceptionally refined, fragrant nose and an energetic, perfectly structured palate without a trace of harshness, followed by a long, airy finish.

The Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru, produced in tiny quantities (sometimes just one barrel) from century-old vines, offers subtle, refined aromas and a palate of superb volume, with finely etched structure and striking depth. A cult wine among enthusiasts.

The Charmes-Chambertin Très Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru represents the absolute pinnacle of Roty’s production. From vines planted in 1881, it reveals intensely concentrated yet understated aromas and a massive but perfectly balanced palate of extraordinary density, with an almost endless finish. A living legend of Burgundy, to be cellared patiently to discover all its facets.
