Domaine Joseph Roty stands among the most legendary and most discreet names in Burgundy. Established at the heart of Gevrey-Chambertin, this family estate of 12 hectares perpetuates an exceptional winemaking tradition dating back to 1710, representing eleven generations of vignerons. Today led by Pierre-Jean Roty, the estate is renowned for its plots of very old vines (some planted in 1881), its extremely low yields, its lengthy vinifications and its carefully tended ageing in oak barrels. The TOP winemakers of Burgundy

Following his passing in 2008, his 2 sons, Philippe and Pierre-Jean, took over the Roty estate together, but Pierre-Jean remained sole head of the domaine following the untimely death of his brother Philippe in 2015. Domaine Joseph Roty boasts a very fine heritage of 12 ha of vines across the appellations of Gevrey-Chambertin and Marsannay (with some old-vine stocks, such as those of the Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, dating back to 1881!). Domaine Roty exports more than 80% of its production, and in France it is difficult to get hold of their bottles. The rich and sensual style of the domaine Roty's wines earns it a prominent place in the Parker guide, and it is regularly acclaimed by critics. Domaine Joseph Roty has built its reputation on the 2 Grand Cru climats of Charmes-Chambertin and Griotte-Chambertin, but also on simpler village appellations such as Gevrey-Chambertin and Marsannay. With an eye on berry ripeness, the philosophy here favours rather late harvests and very low yields, in order to achieve full, lusciously rich juices without sacrificing ageing potential. The vinification style at Domaine Roty is fairly modern and focused on finesse, with total destemming of the berries; ageing is long and takes place in oak barrels used for 1 to 3 wines. Whether Marsannay villages, Premiers Crus, or Grands Crus, the Roty signature is a benchmark, as it is above all a pioneer of a modern and highly accomplished style of remarkable finesse. Domaine Joseph Roty aims to craft Pinot Noirs of a fruity, highly distinctive expression for each terroir, ever more refined yet without any dominant oak imprint. The wines immediately reveal their flattering character, with noses of great aromatic intensity and generous fruit, a palate showing beautiful balance and tannins that are both ripe and silky, with excellent ageing potential. Roty wines are dense and fleshy, and reveal their full depth with a few years of cellaring. The red Marsannay is very expressive, refined, full and balanced, with a deep colour and a rich, complex nose of morello cherry, blackcurrant, vanilla, and spice, underlined by fine oak. The palate is broad, juicy, and lifted by gentle spices with fruit-coated tannins. The finish is impressively long. The Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Fontenys adjoins the Grand Cru Ruchottes-Chambertin, and is a wine of great structure, more earthy and full-bodied, with magnificent depth. Floral notes are more prominent. This is a wine that rewards patience, and will reveal the very subtle notes of a fine Pinot Noir after 5 to 7 years of cellaring. Absolutely recommended…
