All the Grands Crus of Burgundy

The 33 grands crus of Burgundy, located in Côte d'Or and Chablis, represent the pinnacle of Burgundy wine, with an area of approximately 550 hectares (1% of the region's vineyard). These prestigious terroirs, predominantly Pinot Noir for reds and Chardonnay for whites, produce world-renowned wines with exceptional complexity and aging potential. In Côte de Nuits, 24 grands crus include emblematic red wines such as Chambertin, Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Clos de Vougeot, Musigny, Richebourg, Romanée-Saint-Vivant, La Romanée, La Grande Rue, Clos de Tart, Clos des Lambrays, Clos de la Roche, Clos Saint-Denis, Bonnes-Mares, Échezeaux, Grands Échezeaux. In Côte de Beaune, 8 grands crus include renowned white wines such as Montrachet, Chevalier-Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet, Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, Charlemagne, and Corton. Chablis has one grand cru, Chablis Grand Cru, which covers approximately 100 hectares. With areas ranging from 0.85 ha (La Romanée) to 50 ha (Corton), each grand cru of Burgundy reflects a unique micro-terroir, making them highly sought-after wines by wine enthusiasts.

Chablis Grand Cru

The Chablis Grand Cru appellation, located in the Yonne department of Burgundy, France, represents the pinnacle of Chablis wines, made exclusively from Chardonnay grape on a total area of approximately 101 hectares. The terroirs, formed in the Upper Jurassic 150 million years ago, consist of Kimmeridgian marls and limestones rich in tiny oyster fossils (Exogyra virgula), planted on southwest-facing slopes at an altitude of 100 to 250 meters, along the right bank of the Serein river, near the village of Chablis. It includes seven distinct climats (Blanchot: 12.93 ha, Bougros: 15.01 ha, Les Clos: 25.89 ha, Grenouilles: 9.38 ha, Preuses: 10.81 ha, Valmur: 10.55 ha, Vaudésir: 15.42 ha), each expressing subtle nuances. Historically, the Chablis vineyards date back to the Cistercian monks of Pontigny Abbey in the 9th century, with Les Clos as the possible original core; the appellation was recognized in 1938 after centuries of monastic development. The wines are distinguished by their pale greenish-gold color evolving toward light yellow, with intense aromas of minerals (flint, gunflint), linden flowers, dried fruits, almond, honey, and meadow mushroom, offering perfect balance between lively acidity, richness, and dryness, for aging potential of 10 to 15 years or more.

Grands Crus of Côte de Nuits

Clos Saint Denis Grand Cru

Clos Saint-Denis is a Grand Cru of Morey-Saint-Denis in the Côte de Nuits, Burgundy, produced from Pinot Noir on approximately 6.62 hectares. Its clay-limestone terroir rich in active limestone, at 250-300 meters altitude with east exposure, gives the wines remarkable elegance. Historically linked to a monastic estate from the Middle Ages, this cru offers notes of red and black fruits, violet, spices, and truffle after aging, with a fine structure and potential of 15-25 years.

Clos de Tart Grand Cru (Monopole)

Clos de Tart, monopole of Domaine du Clos de Tart since the 12th century by the nuns of Tart, covers 7.53 hectares in Morey-Saint-Denis on clay-limestone soils with east-facing slope at 250-300 meters. This Pinot Noir Grand Cru is renowned for its power and silkiness, with aromas of black fruits, cherry, spices, and undergrowth, evolving over 15-30 years. Its Cistercian history and parcel-based vinification underscore its complexity and balance.

Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru

An almost monopole of Domaine des Lambrays, Clos des Lambrays extends over 8.84 hectares in Morey-Saint-Denis, on clay-limestone terroir with high limestone content, east-facing at 250-300 meters. Historically Cistercian, this Pinot Noir expresses finesse and elegance with notes of red and black fruits, violet, spices, and minerality, for aging potential of 15-25 years, combining harmony and depth.

Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

Clos de la Roche, Grand Cru of Morey-Saint-Denis, occupies approximately 16.9 hectares on clay-limestone soils with limestone rocks, at 250-300 meters altitude east-facing. Its history dates back to the Middle Ages with monks, producing powerful and structured wines with aromas of black fruits, licorice, spices, and earthy notes, with aging potential of 15-30 years, embodying robustness and complexity.

Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

Bonnes Mares, Grand Cru shared between Chambolle-Musigny (13.54 ha) and Morey-Saint-Denis (1.52 ha), totals 15.06 hectares on clay, limestone, and marly soils, east/southeast-facing at 250-300 meters. Possibly named after nuns ("good mothers"), these Pinot Noirs combine power and finesse with aromas of black fruits, raspberry, violet, spices, and earth, for 15-30 years of aging.

Chambertin & Cie Grand Cru

The nine Grands Crus of Gevrey-Chambertin in the Côte de Nuits, collectively covering approximately 87 hectares on Jurassic limestone and clay-limestone soils, at 240-280 meters altitude with east/southeast exposure. Historically, Chambertin (13.62 ha), Napoleon's favorite, takes its name from Bertin's field (a 7th-century monk); Chambertin-Clos de Bèze (15.4 ha), the oldest, was planted by the monks of Bèze in the 7th century; Charmes-Chambertin (29.57 ha, including Mazoyères) offers floral elegance; Chapelle-Chambertin (5.48 ha) is linked to a 12th-century chapel; Griotte-Chambertin (2.73 ha) evokes morello cherries; Latricières-Chambertin (7.35 ha) is known for its freshness; Mazis-Chambertin (9.1 ha) for its robustness; Ruchottes-Chambertin (3.3 ha) for its minerality. All made from Pinot Noir, these wines are distinguished by their tannic power, aromas of black fruits (blackcurrant, blackberry), spices, licorice, and truffle notes with age, with aging potential of 15-40 years. Yields at 35 hl/ha; their worldwide prestige rests on monastic and imperial history, embodying the Burgundian quintessence with terroir-dependent complexity, where Clos de Bèze can be called Chambertin but not vice versa.

Richebourg Grand Cru

Richebourg, Grand Cru of Vosne-Romanée, extends over 8.03 hectares of clay-limestone soils rich in limestone, east-facing slope at 260-300 meters. Historically prestigious since the Middle Ages, this Pinot Noir is opulent with intense notes of blackcurrant, blackberry, spices, violet, and truffle, evolving over 20-40 years, symbolizing depth and elegance.

La Romanée Grand Cru (Monopole)

La Romanée, monopole of Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair, covers 0.845 hectares in Vosne-Romanée on fine clay-limestone terroir, east-facing at 250-280 meters. Created in the 14th century, this rare Grand Cru produces wines of extreme finesse with aromas of rose, red fruits, spices, and minerality, with aging potential of 20-40 years, embodying the Burgundian quintessence.

Romanée Saint Vivant Grand Cru

Romanée-Saint-Vivant, Grand Cru of Vosne-Romanée, occupies 9.43 hectares on clay-limestone soils with marl, east-facing at 250-280 meters. Named after the Abbey of Saint-Vivant in the 9th century, these Pinot Noirs seduce with their elegance, featuring notes of raspberry, violet, oriental spices, and silky tannins, for 15-35 years of aging.

Romanée Conti Grand Cru (Monopole)

Romanée-Conti, monopole of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, extends over 1.81 hectares in Vosne-Romanée on unique clay-limestone terroir, east-facing slope at 260 meters. Historically acquired in 1760, this mythical Pinot Noir offers infinite complexity with aromas of rose, black fruits, spices, truffle, and velvety texture, with aging potential exceeding 30-50 years.

La Tâche Grand Cru

La Tâche, monopole of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, covers 6.06 hectares in Vosne-Romanée on varied clay-limestone soils, east-facing at 250-300 meters. Created in 1933 by unifying historical parcels, this Grand Cru produces powerful and refined wines with notes of cherry, blackberry, Asian spices, and minerality, evolving over 20-40 years.

La Grande Rue Grand Cru

La Grande Rue, monopole of Domaine François Lamarche, occupies 1.65 hectares in Vosne-Romanée on clay-limestone terroir similar to prestigious neighbors, east-facing slope at 250-280 meters. Classified as Grand Cru in 1992 after a history dating back to the 19th century, this Pinot Noir combines finesse and structure with aromas of red fruits, rose, spices, and earthy notes, for 15-30 years of aging.

Musigny Grand Cru

Musigny, Grand Cru of Chambolle-Musigny (with a tiny white portion), extends over 10.86 hectares on limestone and clay soils, east/southeast-facing at 260-300 meters. Historically linked to Cistercian monks since the 11th century, this Pinot Noir is of supreme elegance with aromas of violet, raspberry, rose, spices, and silk, offering 20-40 years of aging.

Echézeaux & Grands Echézeaux Grand Cru

Échezeaux (37.69 ha) and Grands-Échezeaux (7.53 ha), Grands Crus of Flagey-Échezeaux and Vosne-Romanée, on clay-limestone terroirs at 230-300 meters east-facing. Historically Cistercian since the 12th century, Échezeaux offers generosity with red fruits, spices, and supple tannins (15-25 years), while Grands-Échezeaux is more structured with blackcurrant, truffle, and power (20-35 years).

Grands Echézeaux Grand Cru

Grands-Échezeaux, a distinct Grand Cru, covers 7.53 hectares in Flagey-Échezeaux on deep clay-limestone soils, east-facing slope at 240-260 meters. Originating from a historical clos of the monks of Cîteaux in the 12th century, this Pinot Noir is powerful and long, with notes of black fruits, spices, licorice, and truffle, evolving over 20-35 years with great complexity.

Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru

Clos de Vougeot, an emblematic Grand Cru, extends over 50.59 hectares in Vougeot, on varied clay-limestone terroir, east-facing at 240-260 meters. Founded by Cistercian monks in 1098, this historical monopole divided among 80 owners produces robust wines with aromas of cherry, undergrowth, spices, and firm tannins, with aging potential of 15-30 years.

Grands Crus of Côte de Beaune

Corton Grand Cru

Corton is the largest Grand Cru in Burgundy, located on the Corton hill in the communes of Aloxe-Corton, Ladoix-Serrigny, and Pernand-Vergelesses in the Côte de Beaune, France, covering approximately 100.60 hectares primarily for red wines made from Pinot Noir, with a small portion of whites from Chardonnay (97.5% red, 2.5% white). Its varied terroir, composed of limestone marls and clays on east/southeast-facing slopes at 220-350 meters altitude, gives the wines a powerful structure. Historically founded by Charlemagne in the 8th century, who allegedly gave parcels for white wines to avoid staining his beard, this cru offers notes of red and black fruits (kirsch cherry, blackberry), violet, spices, evolving toward undergrowth, leather, and animal notes, with an aging potential of 15-30 years and yields limited to 35-40 hl/ha for reds.

Montrachet & Cie Grand Cru

The Grands Crus of Montrachet, located in the Côte de Beaune, Burgundy, include Montrachet (7.99 ha), Bâtard-Montrachet (11.83 ha), Chevalier-Montrachet (7.47 ha), Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet (3.59 ha), and Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet (1.57 ha), all produced from Chardonnay in the communes of Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet. Covering approximately 32.45 hectares, these vineyards rest on limestone and clay-limestone terroirs rich in fossils, at 230-280 meters altitude with southeast exposure, offering ideal conditions. Historically linked to the Middle Ages, with names evoking legends of lords and bastards, these crus produce exceptional white wines with complex aromas of yellow fruits (pineapple, peach), white flowers, honey, hazelnut, vanilla, and minerality, with textures ranging from opulence (Bâtard, Criots) to tense elegance (Chevalier, Montrachet). Yields, limited to 40 hl/ha, guarantee unique concentration, with aging potential of 15 to 40 years, embodying the summit of Burgundian whites.
