Domaine Jean-Louis Chave
A family estate rooted in the steep hillsides of Hermitage, where the Rhône tradition has been passed down for six generations.
- Terroir: Granitic and schistose soils of the Hermitage appellation, in the northern Rhône — a geology that imparts a distinctive minerality and deep structure to the wines.
- Vinification: Traditional, low-interventionist methods, favouring the pure expression of the Syrah grape variety and the patience of barrel ageing.
Tasting notes for Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage 1997
To the eye: A garnet-red robe with tawny highlights, dense and slightly veiled by time, revealing a silky texture and generous body.
On the nose: First aromas of wild blackberry and candied blackcurrant, followed by notes of liquorice, cedar and a hint of black pepper, all underpinned by a chalky minerality and a subtle gunflint smokiness.
On the palate: A broad and velvety attack, carried by a lively acidity and elegant tension, where flavours of dark fruits, soft spices and a long finish intertwine, marked by a persistent salinity and tannins still present but well integrated.
Serve at 16-18°C in a Burgundy-style red wine glass to fully release its aromas.

A generous and balanced vintage, in which the summer heat ripened the grapes without compromising their freshness, yielding wines that are both powerful and harmonious.
