Vintage 1986

1986 is an exceptional vintage in both quality and quantity. For properties that managed to delay their harvest from October 9th onwards for Cabernet Sauvignon, this 1986 vintage was particularly great and contributed to the production of wines of extraordinary power endowed with incredible aging potential. The red Bordeaux wines from 1986 from the northern Médoc are extremely rich and tannic and set to last many more years. Lafite Rothschild, Léoville Las Cases, Château Margaux and Mouton Rothschild are exceptional and equal legendary vintages such as the wines of 1929, the wines of 1961 or the wines of 1982. The white Bordeaux wines from 1986 are less successful for the dry ones, however Sauternes 1986 and Barsac are excellent. With extraordinary richness, the sweet wines are perfect and Climens, Coutet, De Fargues or Château Yquem stand at the summit. Burgundy 1986 produced a red wine vintage of decent quality, but the Côte de Nuits was affected by September rains (grey rot), making sorting necessary to produce wines without off-flavors. The white Burgundy wines from 1986 are of better quality in the Côte de Beaune.

Our advice for buying a 1986 wine

1986 is rated as correct in Champagne, and although many houses chose not to release a vintage, Krug produced a very great Clos du Mesnil 1986. A mediocre 1986 vintage for Rhône wines, and rather good in Loire (recommendable Coteaux du Layon). Beautiful Rieslings in Alsace.

To choose a wine from the 1986 vintage, it is best to look towards the 1er Grands Crus Classés de Bordeaux 1986 and the finest Sauternes listed above. These wines are indestructible and will delight patient enthusiasts. Burgundy 1986 produced several wines of notable interest (Beaune Clos des Mouches 86, Romanée St Vivant de la DRC 1986, or Chevalier Montrachet 1986 from Bouchard). If your budget allows, a Krug Clos du Mesnil 1986 will bring you great pleasure.
