All wines from the Pommard appellation in Burgundy

The Pommard appellation, located in the prestigious Côte de Beaune in Burgundy, produces exclusively red wines made solely from Pinot Noir. Covering approximately 313 hectares, of which nearly 125 hectares are classified as Premiers Crus, Pommard captivates with the richness and diversity of its terroirs. With 28 Premier Cru climats, including emblematic parcels such as Les Rugiens, Les Grands Épenots, Les Petits Épenots or Les Pézerolles, this appellation produces exceptional wines, recognized for their robust structure and aging potential. The clay-limestone soils, often enriched with iron, give Pommard wines pronounced tannins, beautiful concentration and complex aromas of black fruits (blackcurrant, blackberry), spices and sometimes mineral or animal notes after aging. Without Grands Crus, Pommard nonetheless remains a star of Burgundy wines, with an annual production of approximately 1.2 million bottles, depending on the vintage. Ideally situated between Beaune and Volnay, the appellation benefits from a temperate continental climate, promoting balanced maturation of Pinot Noir. Pommard wines are distinguished by their power and elegance, often described as more full-bodied than those of Volnay, although each producer and climat brings its unique signature.

The Pommard appellation

Pommard, a renowned appellation of Burgundy, is celebrated for its robust and structured red wines. Located in the Côte de Beaune, this wine region benefits from an exceptional terroir that gives birth to expressive and powerful wines. The Pommard vineyards extend over well-exposed slopes, where the clay-limestone soil imparts a distinctive richness to the grapes.

  • Soils: The soils of Pommard are primarily composed of marl, limestone, and clay. These clay-limestone soils impart depth and complexity characteristic of the appellation's wines. The presence of clay promotes water retention, which can be beneficial for the vine, while limestone brings a distinctive minerality to the wines.
  • Slopes: The Pommard vineyards are located on well-exposed slopes, benefiting from a southeast to east orientation. This topography offers excellent sun exposure, promoting optimal ripening of the grapes. The slopes also allow good drainage, avoiding excess humidity and contributing to the quality of the grapes.
  • Climate: Pommard is part of Burgundy's continental climate. Summers are generally warm, while winters can be cold. The continental climate involves significant temperature variations between seasons, which is beneficial for the development of aromas in the grapes. However, it can also make the vines susceptible to spring frosts.
  • Climatic influences: The climatic influences of the region are also marked by the proximity of the Montagne de Corton forest, which acts as a natural barrier against northwestern winds. This creates a particular microclimate that contributes to the gradual ripening of the grapes, enhancing the aromatic complexity and tannic structure of the wines.

The profile of Pommard wines 

Pommard wines generally have the following profile: 

  • Color: Pommard wines typically display a deep and intense red color. Their hue is often dark, ranging from deep ruby to garnet, reflecting the concentration of pigments extracted from the grape skins during vinification.
  • Nose: Olfactively, Pommard wines offer a complex and expressive bouquet. Aromas of ripe red fruits, such as black cherry and raspberry, are frequent. One can also perceive spicy notes, sometimes peppery, as well as woody or vanilla nuances from aging in oak barrels. Some more mature vintages may develop aromas of leather, undergrowth, and truffle.
  • Palate: On the palate, Pommard wines are distinguished by their robust tannic structure. Some Pommard premier crus can reach their peak after a decade, while great vintages can offer excellent tasting even after several decades.
