Frequently Asked Questions

Château Gazin is one of the great historic estates of the Pomerol appellation, on the Right Bank of Bordeaux. Its vineyard extends over approximately 26 hectares, making it one of the largest properties in this appellation renowned for its wines of remarkable richness and unctuousness. The estate directly borders the famous Pétrus, which bears witness to the exceptional quality of its clay terroir.

Château Gazin wine stands out for its velvety texture and aromas of ripe black fruits, truffle, and gentle spices. For an optimal tasting experience, it is recommended to serve it between 16 and 18 °C, ideally after decanting for one hour for younger vintages. It pairs beautifully with roasted red meats, game birds, truffled mushrooms, or beef in a porcini sauce.

"Château Gazin produces its eponymous grand vin, drawn from the estate's finest plots and oldest vines. It also produces a second wine, L'Hospitalet de Gazin, which comes from younger vines and offers a more accessible approach, both in terms of price and early drinkability. This second wine is an excellent entry point for discovering the estate's style, with the same aromatic signature but a more supple structure and faster maturity."

Among the most remarkable vintages of Château Gazin, lovers of great Pomerol wines often cite 1961, 1989, and 1990 as absolute references. The 1989 in particular is celebrated for its balance between concentration and elegance. The years 2000, 2005, and 2009 also mark a significant rise in the estate's stature, with wines of truly admirable density and complexity.

The wines of Château Gazin are renowned for their excellent aging potential, typical of the great Pomerols. Character vintages can be cellared for 15 to 30 years, or even longer in exceptional years. Bottles from vintages such as 1975, 1982, or 1995 still demonstrate fine vitality today, proving the estate's ability to produce wines made to endure gracefully over time.

The Château Gazin vineyard is predominantly planted with Merlot, which accounts for approximately 90% of the grape varieties. This king of Pomerol expresses itself with great generosity on the estate's clay-gravel soils, yielding round, fleshy wines of beautiful aromatic depth. Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon complete the blend, bringing structure and freshness.

History of Château Gazin

Château Gazin's roots lie in a rich and ancient history. The first traces of the estate date back to the late 18th century, when Antoine Feuilhade, a Bordeaux lawyer, was its owner. However, it was at the beginning of the 20th century that the estate took on a new dimension with its acquisition by Louis Soualle, the great-grandfather of the current owners. Since then, Château Gazin has remained in the family, today managed by the fifth generation represented by Laure, Nicolas, Christophe and Inès de Bailliencourt dit Courcol.

The estate's history is closely linked to the former presence of the Knights of the Hospital of Pomeyrols, an establishment built to welcome pilgrims on the road to Santiago de Compostela. This historical connection is reflected in the name of the estate's second wine, L'Hospitalet de Gazin, and in its emblematic logo.

In 1969, Château Gazin sold part of its vineyards (5.5 hectares) to the prestigious Château Petrus, marking a turning point in its history. Under the direction of Nicolas Bailliencourt, who took the helm in 1990, the estate underwent a gradual modernisation while returning to traditional methods, such as hand harvesting and a reduction in yields to improve the quality of the wines.

The 2005 and 2010 vintages of Château Gazin were rated 96/100 by Robert Parker, underscoring the quality and richness of this Pomerol.

Terroirs and Vines of Château Gazin

Château Gazin benefits from an exceptional terroir situated on the high clay-gravel terrace of Pomerol. With its 26 hectares in a single block, the estate boasts one of the largest vineyard surfaces in the appellation, which is relatively rare in this region.

The vineyard soil is primarily composed of Günzian gravel on the surface, with layers of blue and green clays in the subsoil, rich in iron oxides, locally known as "crasse de fer." These clays, characteristic of the great terroirs of Pomerol, ensure a regular and moderate water supply, essential for the proper ripening of the grapes. This geological particularity allows Château Gazin to produce wines of remarkable complexity and longevity, capable of ageing for several decades.

The vineyard is planted predominantly with Merlot (90%), alongside Cabernet Sauvignon (7%) and Cabernet Franc (3%). The average age of the vines is 35 years, an important factor contributing to the concentration and quality of the grapes. The plots are carefully tended with respect for the environment, using traditional practices such as ploughing, the use of organic fertilisers and integrated pest management. The estate is also certified Haute Valeur Environnementale (HVE3), highlighting its commitment to sustainability and the protection of biodiversity.

Winemaking at Château Gazin

The winemaking process at Château Gazin is meticulous and carried out in keeping with Bordeaux traditions. The harvest is done by hand, plot by plot, to ensure optimal ripeness of the grapes. A first sorting is carried out directly in the vineyard, then two further sortings are performed in the winery, before and after destemming, in order to select only the finest fruit.

Alcoholic fermentations take place in small concrete tanks, grape variety by grape variety and plot by plot, to preserve the specificity of each terroir. A maceration period of the juice with the skins follows, lasting two to three weeks, allowing colour, aromas and tannins to be extracted. After this phase, the free-run wine is drained off and the pomace pressed separately to yield a press juice that is carefully kept apart.

Malolactic fermentation, which softens the wines, takes place either in tanks or in barrels, depending on the characteristics of each lot. The wines are then aged in French oak barrels (50% new wood) for 18 months. During this period, regular rackings allow the blends to be refined. This prolonged contact with the fine lees and the tannins of the wood gives the wines their structure, complexity and ageing potential.

The Cuvées of Château Gazin

Château Gazin produces two main cuvées:

Château Gazin

The estate's Fine Wine, a classic, powerful and elegant Pomerol. It stands out for its aromatic depth, with notes of dark fruits (blackcurrant, plum), soft spices and sometimes hints of leather or undergrowth. On the palate, it offers a rich and harmonious texture, supported by a fine tannic structure that allows it to age admirably for 20 years or more. The 2020 vintage, for example, is ample and athletic, offering a beautiful tension brought by the Cabernet Sauvignon. Lovers of great Bordeaux wines will find in each vintage the signature of a distinguished, age-worthy wine, reflecting the exceptional terroir of Pomerol.

L'Hospitalet de Gazin

Created in 1986, this second wine comes from the estate's young vines. It shares the same grape blend as the Fine Wine (90% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc) and benefits from the same care in its winemaking. L'Hospitalet de Gazin is more approachable in its youth than Château Gazin, while retaining a beautiful aromatic depth and a pleasant tannic structure. It makes an excellent introduction to the world of great Pomerol wines, while being easier to drink young.

On average, the estate produces up to 100,000 bottles per year, of which 86% are exported around the world, primarily through the Bordeaux wine trade.

Pomerol, one of the most prestigious appellations of Bordeaux, has produced some of the finest wines over the decades. The most remarkable vintages include 1970, 1975, 1982, 1983, 1989, and 1990, recognised for their complexity and longevity. Other exceptional years such as 1995, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2010 continue to enchant lovers of great wines. More recently, the vintages 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020 have confirmed Pomerol's ability to produce wines of exceptional quality, further consolidating the reputation of this appellation among the greatest of Bordeaux.

Discover the other great châteaux of Pomerol, true treasures of the Right Bank, where each estate vies for excellence.
