Our advice for buying a 2017 wine

Some plots in Bordeaux, particularly Margaux and Saint Julien on the Left Bank, as well as certain terroirs on the Right Bank (Pomerol and Saint Emilion) were spared by the frost. The result is a range of Bordeaux red wines — some concentrated and rich, others more subtle. The leading producers adapted well to the lack of concentration of the 2017 vintage, similar to 2014, such as Château Évangile. Great wines can also be found in the Médoc, such as in Saint Estèphe, Pauillac and in the Graves, such as in Pessac Léognan.

Burgundy stands out in 2017, except for Chablis and certain areas of the Mâconnais, which fell victim to climatic hazards. The Côte de Nuits had a fine harvest, spared by the frost, and promises great Burgundy wines. Some winemakers compare the abundance of 2017 to that of 2009. The Burgundy red wines are splendid from the grand crus, particularly in Gevrey and especially Chambertin. Vosne Romanée and Morey Saint Denis are superb, as is the Clos de la Roche and the Clos Saint Denis. Some plots were severely affected by frost on the Côte Chalonnaise, particularly Givry, Bouzeron, Mercurey and Rully.

The northern Rhône Valley was spared in 2017. The Rhône red wines are indulgent, with silky tannins, such as the Cornas 2017 from Vincent Paris. The northern Rhône white wines are more complex: concentrated, with high alcohol potential and low acidity. Saint Peray 2017 is a great success, combining richness and freshness. The Condrieu 2017 are generous; the leading producers compensated for the lack of acidity by working with bitter notes, such as Cuilleron and Gérin. Hermitage produced more white wines than in 2016, sun-drenched, rich and deep.

Provence and Corsica experienced severe drought in 2017. The water stress led to low yields and high concentrations. The white wines are less lively than 2016, with more pronounced bitter notes. The red wines are fleshy, indulgent, almost jammy, like the wines of Abbatucci.

You may set aside your 2016 and 2015 Bordeaux, and enjoy your 2017 Bordeaux first.

Enjoy the Burgundy white wines from the Côte Chalonnaise in their youth. The Pinot Noirs from the Côte de Nuits are splendid, tender, with plenty of juice. The pleasure is immediate and the 2017s are ready to drink sooner. Nuits Saint Georges 2017 will call for longer ageing. A great success in 2017 for Beaujolais, where the Gamay shows ageing potential of 5 to 10 years depending on the cru, particularly the Morgon 2017 from Marcel Lapierre.

2017 is a vintage for ageing in Alsace for the great white wines, particularly the dry Muscats and the 2017 hillside Alsace Rieslings. The Alsace Gewurztraminers from grand cru vineyards have produced very great wines, to enjoy now or to lay down in your cellar.

The red wines of Loire 2017 are very diverse. Some Cabernet Francs are ready to drink young, particularly in Bourgueil (Domaine Bel air), and Chinon, while others are particularly suited for ageing, such as Saumur Champigny. Some very fine successes among the dry 2017 Loire whites, especially wines produced in biodynamics.
