Frequently Asked Questions About Château Lafite Rothschild

Château Lafite Rothschild has been classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classé since the famous 1855 classification, a distinction it shares with only four other properties in the Médoc. Its exceptional terroir in Pauillac, composed of deep gravels and a clay-limestone subsoil, offers ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon. The style of Lafite is distinguished by a rare elegance: silky tannins, incomparable aromatic finesse and exceptional longevity. It is this unique combination of terroir, ancestral expertise and consistency in quality that makes it an absolute reference in the world of wine.

Château Lafite Rothschild produces two flagship wines: the Grand Vin and its second wine, Carruades de Lafite. The Grand Vin is crafted from the finest plots and oldest vines, with a rigorous selection of grapes. It expresses the full complexity and depth of the estate, with an ageing potential that can span several decades. Carruades de Lafite, on the other hand, comes from younger vines and lots not retained for the Grand Vin. More accessible in terms of price and approachability in youth, it nonetheless offers an elegant and refined style, faithful to the spirit of the estate. It is an excellent entry point into the world of Lafite.

The Château Lafite Rothschild estate is located in Pauillac, in the Haut-Médoc, north of Bordeaux. The vineyard covers approximately 112 hectares of vines, planted primarily with Cabernet Sauvignon (around 70%), complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. The plots benefit from optimal sun exposure and a particularly well-draining Günz gravel soil, which forces the vine roots to plunge deep in search of water and nutrients. This unique geology directly contributes to the minerality and finesse that are characteristic of Lafite Rothschild.

To give a memorable bottle of Château Lafite Rothschild, certain vintages are unanimously praised by enthusiasts and critics alike. The 1982 is often cited as legendary, marking a turning point in the estate's history with its extraordinary richness and complexity. The 1996 stands out as a great Médoc classic, remarkable for its precision and structure. The 2000 and 2003 are also highly regarded for their opulence and balance. For an exceptional gift, these vintages perfectly embody the prestige and refinement associated with Château Lafite Rothschild.

To fully enjoy a bottle of Château Lafite Rothschild, a few precautions are in order. It is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 16 and 18°C, ideal for revealing its full aromatic complexity. For recent vintages or great years such as 1995 or 2005, a minimum decanting of one to two hours is advised in order to oxygenate the wine and allow its aromas to fully develop. A Bordeaux glass, wide and slightly narrowed towards the top, is the most suitable format. In terms of food and wine pairings, it pairs wonderfully with noble red meats, game, or hard aged cheeses.

Château Lafite Rothschild is one of the Bordeaux wines best suited for ageing. Depending on the vintage, its ageing potential is impressive: great years such as 1959, 1982 or 1996 can age serenely for 40 to 60 years, or even longer, under optimal storage conditions. For an ideal cellar, a stable temperature of around 12°C, a humidity level of 70 to 80%, away from light and vibrations, should be maintained. Bottles must be stored horizontally to keep the cork moist. Under these conditions, Château Lafite Rothschild develops over time tertiary aromas of exceptional complexity and depth.

History of Château Lafite Rothschild

The history of Château Lafite Rothschild is a saga spanning nearly eight centuries, beginning as early as 1234, when the estate, then devoted to cereals and livestock farming, already bore the name of Gombaud de Lafite. It was not until the 17th century, under the impetus of Jacques de Ségur, that the vineyard began to take shape, laying the foundations of its renown. In 1695, Alexandre de Ségur, heir to Jacques, married the heiress of Château Latour, thus linking two of the greatest names in the Médoc. From the 18th century onwards, Château Lafite wine seduced the European courts, notably that of Versailles, where it was nicknamed the "Vin du Roi" — the King's Wine — thanks to the support of the Maréchal de Richelieu, who described it as "the finest tonic."

In 1855, at the Paris Universal Exhibition, Château Lafite was named Premier des Premiers Crus, a distinction that consecrated its supremacy among the wines of Bordeaux. In 1868, Baron James de Rothschild acquired the estate, marking the beginning of the Rothschild era, which continues today across six generations. Despite the challenges of phylloxera, world wars and the Great Depression, the estate managed to recover, notably under the direction of Baron Élie after 1945, then Baron Éric from 1974. Since 2018, Saskia de Rothschild, the first woman to head the Domaines Barons de Rothschild, has perpetuated this quest for excellence, integrating sustainable practices and a forward-looking vision. This rich history makes Château Lafite Rothschild a symbol of consistency and refinement, embodied by legendary vintages such as 1870, 1959, 1982, 2003, 2009 and 2016.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Château Lafite Rothschild

The Château Lafite Rothschild vineyard extends over 112 hectares in the Pauillac appellation, approximately 40 km north of Bordeaux, on the left bank of the Gironde estuary. Divided into three main zones, the vineyard benefits from an exceptional terroir: the slopes surrounding the château, the Carruades plateau to the west, and a 4.5-hectare plot in the neighbouring commune of Saint-Estèphe, incorporated thanks to a historic exemption. The deep fine gravel soils, mixed with aeolian sands and resting on a subsoil of Tertiary limestone, provide optimal drainage and ideal exposure, promoting perfect ripening of the grapes, particularly Cabernet Sauvignon.

The grape varieties cultivated are dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon (70%), followed by Merlot (25%), Cabernet Franc (3%) and Petit Verdot (2%). The average age of the vines is 39 years, but those used for the Grand Vin Château Lafite Rothschild reach an average of 45 years, with historic plots such as La Gravière, planted in 1886. Some vines, spared by phylloxera, are over 140 years old, bearing witness to the resilience of this unique terroir. Since 2017, the estate has committed to a progressive conversion to organic farming, completed in 2024 for the Grand Vin vines, reinforcing its commitment to preserving this exceptional ecosystem, surrounded by 126 hectares of wetlands classified as Natura 2002.

The Carruades plateau, the highest point of the appellation, is characterised by clay-gravel soils ideal for Merlot, while the gravelly slopes around the château favour the elegance and minerality of Cabernet Sauvignon. This diversity of soils, inherited from the alluvial deposits of the Pyrenees and the Massif Central, allows Château Lafite Rothschild to produce wines of unparalleled complexity and finesse, capable of withstanding the vagaries of climate while fully expressing their terroir.

Vinification at Château Lafite Rothschild

Vinification at Château Lafite Rothschild is a model of precision and tradition, designed to bring out the full potential of its unique terroir. The harvest, exclusively manual, is carried out plot by plot to respect the specific characteristics of each terroir and the ripeness level of the grapes. The grapes are sorted by hand on traditional sorting tables, ensuring rigorous selection. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in 66 vats of varying sizes (from 45 to 270 hectolitres), combining wood, stainless steel and concrete, allowing vinification to be tailored to each grape variety and plot. Cabernet Sauvignon is vinified in wooden and stainless-steel vats, while Merlot ferments primarily in concrete vats.

Maceration, lasting an average of 22 days, is accompanied by gentle pump-overs to softly extract tannins and phenolic compounds. After alcoholic fermentation, the free-run and press juices are separated, and malolactic fermentation takes place in smaller stainless-steel tanks (25 to 60 hectolitres). In 2010, the estate modernised its facilities with two new cellars: one dedicated to Merlot with concrete vats of 50 to 125 hectolitres, and another for malolactic fermentation with stainless-steel tanks of 30 to 70 hectolitres. This plot-by-plot approach preserves the identity of each terroir right through to the final blend.

Ageing, lasting 18 to 20 months, takes place in 100% new French oak barrels, crafted by the Tonnellerie des Domaines in Pauillac, ensuring a subtly integrated wood influence. Each barrel is tasted individually to select the finest cuvées destined for the Grand Vin Château Lafite Rothschild. The wine is clarified with 4 to 6 egg whites per barrel, a traditional technique that captures suspended particles. The circular cellar, designed by architect Ricardo Bofill and inaugurated in 1987, accommodates up to 2,200 barrels, providing a majestic setting for the ageing of the wine. This artisanal and meticulous approach lends the wines of Lafite Rothschild their unique signature: timeless elegance and exceptional aromatic complexity.

The Cuvées of Château Lafite Rothschild

Château Lafite Rothschild - The Grand Vin

The Grand Vin Château Lafite Rothschild is the flagship of the estate, a wine of legendary elegance and longevity, considered one of the most refined in the Médoc. Crafted primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon (80 to 95%), complemented by Merlot (5 to 20%), and sometimes a touch of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, this wine is sourced from the oldest vines (over 10 years, with an average of 45 years). Its deep red colour reveals a complex nose of fresh red and black fruits, cedar, graphite and toasted notes. On the palate, it offers a silky texture, fine tannins and a fresh, persistent finish, promising exceptional ageing potential. Vintages such as 1982, 2003, 2009, 2010 and 2016 are particularly sought after, with some, such as the 1870, remaining legendary. Average annual production stands at approximately 16,000 cases, or 192,000 bottles, sold through the Place de Bordeaux.

Carruades de Lafite - The Second Wine

Carruades de Lafite, the estate's second wine, takes its name from the Carruades plateau, a clay-gravel terroir acquired in the late 19th century. Primarily composed of Merlot (often more than 50%), complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon and sometimes Cabernet Franc, this wine is crafted from younger vines (less than 10 years old). Vinified according to the same traditional methods as the Grand Vin, with fermentation in wooden, concrete and stainless-steel vats, and ageing for 16 months in French oak barrels, Carruades de Lafite offers a distinct personality, marked by roundness and more immediate accessibility. Its aromas of black fruits, spices and woody notes appeal to enthusiasts in search of an elegant and approachable wine, while reflecting the heritage of the estate. Highly sought after, particularly in the Asian market, it has become a collector's wine in its own right.

Anseillan - An Exceptional Cuvée

Introduced in 2018, Anseillan is a rare cuvée, produced from a unique plot in Pauillac, close to the Gironde estuary, on a terroir of gravel, clay and limestone. Dominated by Merlot (for example, 48% in 2018, with 39% Cabernet Sauvignon and 13% Petit Verdot), this cuvée embodies a modern approach while honouring the traditions of the estate. With careful vinification and barrel ageing, Anseillan offers a balanced structure, supple tannins and aromas of ripe fruit, promising a bright future. This exclusive cuvée, relaunched after a hiatus since the 1980s, is a must-discover for lovers of unique and promising wines.
