Frequently Asked Questions

The Armand Rousseau estate is established at the heart of Gevrey-Chambertin and produces a range of wines exclusively from the Côte de Nuits. Its portfolio includes several prestigious grand crus such as Chambertin, Chambertin Clos de Bèze, Charmes-Chambertin, and Clos Saint-Jacques, one of its most emblematic premier crus. Each cuvée expresses with precision the terroir of a specific plot, reflecting the house style: elegance, finesse, and great aromatic depth.

The great vintages from Domaine Armand Rousseau in Burgundy are generally those that have benefited from a balanced growing cycle, with a slow ripening of the Pinot Noir. Years such as 2010, 2015, and 2019 are unanimously praised for the depth and complexity of the wines produced. A great vintage is distinguished by a beautiful concentration on the palate, silky tannins, and a high ageing potential. The qualitative consistency of the estate is such that even the so-called delicate vintages yield bottles of remarkable finesse.

These two neighboring grand crus from the Armand Rousseau estate share the same granitic and limestone terroir of Gevrey-Chambertin, yet deliver distinct expressions. The Chambertin is often described as more powerful, more fleshy, with an imposing tannic structure that requires time to fully reveal itself. The Chambertin Clos de Bèze, on the other hand, tends to show greater elegance and refinement from an early age, with remarkable aromatic complexity. Both rank among the most coveted Burgundy wines in the world.

The rarity of Domaine Armand Rousseau's wines is explained above all by extremely limited production volumes. The domaine farms around 14 hectares of vines spread across very small, parcel-based appellations, which mechanically restricts the quantities available for sale. Global demand far exceeds supply, particularly for the grand crus such as Chambertin. Purchasing from a wine merchant or a reliable specialist website often remains the surest way to obtain them.

To fully enjoy a wine from Domaine Armand Rousseau, it is recommended to serve it between 14 and 16°C in a wide-mouthed Burgundy glass, which allows the bouquet to express itself fully. A decantation of one to two hours is recommended for young bottles in order to open up the aromas. Older vintages, with their melted tannins, can be served more quickly after opening. In terms of food and wine pairings, these Pinot Noirs harmonise ideally with game, roasted poultry, or hard cheeses from Burgundy.

The grand crus from Domaine Armand Rousseau are wines built for long cellaring. Depending on the vintage and the appellation, a patience of 10 to 25 years is often rewarded with exceptional complexity and depth. The Chambertin and the Clos de Bèze reach their peak after 15 to 20 years in the finest vintages. It is advisable to store them in a cellar at a stable temperature, between 12 and 14 °C, away from light and vibrations, to preserve their full expression.

History of Domaine Armand Rousseau

The history of Domaine Armand Rousseau is a family saga, rooted in the winemaking traditions of Burgundy for over a century. It all began at the start of the 20th century, when Armand Rousseau, descended from a line of winegrowers, coopers, and négociants, inherited parcels in Gevrey-Chambertin upon coming of age. In 1909, his marriage enabled him to expand the vineyard and establish the domaine in the old part of the village, at the foot of a 13th-century church. A visionary, Armand began by selling his wines in bulk before acquiring prestigious terroirs such as Charmes-Chambertin, Clos de la Roche, and Chambertin. From the 1930s onwards, he pioneered estate bottling, exporting to the post-Prohibition United States and collaborating with figures such as Raymond Baudoin of the Revue du Vin de France.

Upon Armand's tragic death in 1959, his son Charles took the reins, doubling the surface area to 6 hectares and developing exports to Europe, Canada, Australia, and Asia. Multilingual and trained in law and oenology, Charles acquired Grands Crus such as Chambertin Clos de Bèze and the monopole Clos des Ruchottes. In 1982, his son Eric joined the team after studying oenology and gaining experience at Burgundy négociants. He introduced sustainable practices, steering the domaine towards an environmentally respectful approach, close to organic farming. Since 2014, Cyrielle, Eric's daughter, has brought a modern touch, enriched by international experiences in Oregon, Australia, and New Zealand. Together, they perpetuate a heritage in which each generation passes on its love of the vine, making Domaine Armand Rousseau an essential reference for purchasing Burgundy wine.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Domaine Armand Rousseau

At Domaine Armand Rousseau, the terroir is at the heart of everything, regarded as the ultimate instrument for revealing the unique personality of Pinot Noir, the king grape of Burgundy. The 15 hectares are divided into 3 hectares of Village appellations, nearly 4 hectares of Premiers Crus, and more than 8 hectares of Grands Crus, principally in Gevrey-Chambertin and one parcel in Morey-Saint-Denis. The clay-limestone soils, typical of the Côte de Nuits, combined with a continental climate, favour slow ripening and a fine expression of aromas.

The vines, with an average age of 40 to 45 years, are planted at high density (11,000 vines per hectare) with clones selected for their low yield and concentration. The domaine practises integrated pest management with a biological tendency, avoiding insecticides and chemical products, with mechanical soil work to preserve the natural balance. Techniques such as bud thinning, green harvesting, and leaf removal optimise phenolic ripeness, prioritising quality over quantity (yields of 30 to 40 hl/ha). Each climat — those unique parcels delimited by monks a thousand years ago — is carefully tended to reveal its nuances: east or south-east exposures, varied slopes, and distinct limestone compositions. This deep respect for the terroir, enriched by four generations of experience, gives the wines an inimitable signature.

Vinifications at Domaine Armand Rousseau

Winemaking at Domaine Armand Rousseau remains true to a traditional, minimalist, and respectful approach, aimed at preserving the essence of the terroir without artifice. The grapes, harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, undergo 90% destemming to avoid excessive bitterness, followed by a cold maceration of four to five days in open stainless-steel vats. Alcoholic fermentation takes place naturally with indigenous yeasts, under temperature control (maximum 31–34 °C), accompanied by pigeage and pumping-over to extract colour, tannins, and aromas without excess.

After pneumatic pressing, the wines are decanted and then aged in French oak barrels (François Frères), with a proportion of new wood varying according to the cuvée: 100% for the flagship wines such as Chambertin and Clos Saint-Jacques, 30% for the other Grands Crus, and used barrels for the lower-level wines. Ageing lasts 20 to 22 months, with the cellars heated in winter to accelerate malolactic fermentation, while maintaining minimal intervention. A light filtration precedes bottling, preserving purity and longevity. This artisanal winemaking approach, unchanged since the estate's origins, produces wines that are approachable young but evolve magnificently, perfect for purchasing to lay down or for immediate enjoyment.

The Cuvées of Domaine Armand Rousseau

Domaine Armand Rousseau offers a range of iconic cuvées, all sourced from Pinot Noir, capturing the soul of the terroirs of Gevrey-Chambertin and Morey-Saint-Denis. Each bottle reflects the family philosophy: finesse, elegance, and faithfulness to the climat.

The Gevrey-Chambertin Cuvée Clos du Château - Monopole (1.36 ha, east facing) is a gem acquired in 2012. After partial uprooting and replanting, mechanical soil work and biodynamic trials have refined this wine, which gains in quality year after year, offering a promising expression of freshness and minerality.

The Gevrey-Chambertin Village (1.68 ha out of a total 359 ha, east facing) assembles eight varied parcels, complemented by declassified Premiers Crus. With its aromas of red fruits and its balanced structure, it is an ideal introduction to the domaine's wines, combining finesse and accessibility.

The Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux-Saint-Jacques (0.76 ha out of 9.5 ha, south-east facing) comes from lower parcels influenced by the Combe Lavaux, harvested last for extended ripeness. On fine limestone soils, it delivers notes of cherry, elegance, and fresh minerality.

The Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers (0.60 ha out of 9 ha, east facing) adjoins the Clos Saint-Jacques, with an ochre soil rich in clay and stones. Complex and precise, this elegant wine evolves towards a youthful structure, marked by floral and spiced aromas.

The Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru (1.47 ha out of 28.43 ha, east facing) blends parcels from Charmes and Mazoyères on varied limestone soils. Supple and refined, it expresses a floral elegance with notes of red fruits, ideal for a sophisticated tasting.

The Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru (0.53 ha out of 9 ha, east facing) occupies the Mazis-Bas on shallow limestone soils. Powerful and virile, with a firm structure and intense aromas, it is a full-bodied wine that gains in complexity with age.

The Clos de la Roche Grand Cru (1.48 ha out of 16.84 ha, east facing), unique to Morey-Saint-Denis, rests on thin limestone soils with large blocks. Mineral and powerful, it offers a long persistence, with firmness and consistency.

The Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru - Clos des Ruchottes - Monopole (1.06 ha out of 3.3 ha, east facing) is a stony terroir influenced by the Combe Lavaux. Delicate and mineral, it captivates with its freshness and gentle expression, almost untouchable.

The Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques (2.21 ha out of 6.7 ha, south-east facing) is often compared to a forgotten Grand Cru. On fertile, stony soils, it benefits from the freshness of the Combe, producing a rich, full-bodied, and persistent wine.

The Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru (1.42 ha out of 15.39 ha, east facing), of monastic origin, assembles two parcels on calcareous scree. Elegant and feminine, with a rich palette of dark fruits and spices, it embodies finesse and velvety texture.

Finally, the Chambertin Grand Cru (2.55 ha out of 12.9 ha, east facing) comes from four parcels, one of which is ploughed by horse. Masculine and powerful, with aromas of chocolate, liquorice, and red fruits, it is the wine of kings — dense and persistent.

In short, Domaine Armand Rousseau represents the pinnacle of Burgundy wines, where family passion and respect for the terroir combine to create unforgettable cuvées. Explore our selection at the best price and let yourself be seduced by the Rousseau heritage!
