The House was founded in 1776, but it only took its current name in 1833, when Louis Roederer took over the champagne house. Since then, Louis Roederer has been one of the last great family-owned and independent Champagne Houses, today led by Frédéric Rouzaud, who represents the seventh generation. This family longevity, rare in the world of champagne, is at the heart of the House's identity and standards of excellence.

Louis Roederer's cuvées are primarily crafted from three noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Meunier. Pinot Noir, the House's signature grape variety, brings structure, depth, and complexity to the wines, while Chardonnay contributes freshness and elegance, and Pinot Meunier, roundness and softness. Each grape variety is vinified separately, plot by plot, to better preserve the expression of each terroir before the final blending.

Unlike most entry-level cuvées from the major Champagne houses, Louis Roederer decided to create a multi-vintage cuvée that would be different each year. Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon created the Collection cuvée for this purpose from 2017 onwards, released on the market in 2021, thus permanently replacing the former Brut Premier cuvée. Each edition thus bears the imprint of a specific harvest, enriched with reserve wines from several previous vintages, for a renewed aromatic profile and a more assertive expression of the terroir.

At the request of Alexander II, the first "prestige cuvée" in history, Cristal, was created in 1876 for the exclusive consumption of the Tsars of Russia. The vines that contribute to the elaboration of the Cristal cuvée come from 45 named plots among the most chalky in Champagne, and are at least 25 years old, the threshold from which the chalk terroir expresses itself fully. It is this combination of exceptional plots and an extended ageing of more than six years in the cellar that gives Cristal its incomparable saline character and aromatic precision.

135 hectares of the Louis Roederer vineyard are cultivated organically, making it the largest organic farming estate in Champagne. In the vineyards, respect for biodiversity is paramount and the principles of biodynamics are playing an increasingly important role. The harvests are done by hand and the fruit is pressed on-site at the point of harvest. This environmental commitment is also reflected in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and the use of lighter bottles.

The 250 hectares of the Louis Roederer vineyard are spread across the three main production zones of Champagne: the Montagne de Reims, the Vallée de la Marne and the Côte des Blancs. The vineyard is located primarily in the grands crus (70%) and premiers crus of the Marne, understood as true "climats" in the Burgundian sense, spread across 420 plots. This exceptional land ownership allows the House to control the quality of its grapes at every stage, from the soil to the bottle.

History of Maison Louis Roederer

Founded in 1776, Maison Louis Roederer truly came into its own in 1833 when Louis Roederer inherited it. At a time when most champagne producers purchased grapes, Louis Roederer made a bold decision: he chose to acquire vineyard plots in grand crus in order to control every stage of the winemaking process. This visionary strategy allowed him to better control the quality of the grapes and to produce unique champagnes, imbued with the richness of the terroirs.

In 1876, to meet the demands of Russian Emperor Alexander II, the house created the first prestige cuvée, the famous "Cristal", which remains to this day one of the most sought-after champagnes in the world. Several generations of the Roederer family subsequently perpetuated this quest for excellence, each contributing their own stone to the edifice. Camille Olry-Roederer, in the 1930s, relaunched the house after the Great Depression and added a touch of glamour by organising lavish receptions.

Today, under the direction of Frédéric Rouzaud, the seventh generation, Maison Louis Roederer continues to innovate, while remaining true to its original philosophy: a great wine is born from the land and respect for tradition. With an annual production of three million bottles, Louis Roederer is one of the greatest names in Champagne, while remaining deeply committed to its family management and independence.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Maison Louis Roederer

Maison Louis Roederer possesses a major asset: its own vineyards, a rarity in Champagne. Today, the house holds 250 hectares of vines, spread across 420 distinct plots in three of the region's most prestigious terroirs: the Montagne de Reims, the Vallée de la Marne and the Côte des Blancs. 

This diversity of terroirs allows the house to draw on a wide palette of expressions to craft its cuvées. The three main grape varieties used are Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier. Pinot Noir brings structure and intensity, Chardonnay confers elegance and freshness, while Pinot Meunier contributes suppleness and harmony.

The house has also adopted a sustainable and environmentally responsible approach to cultivating its vines. For more than 20 years, Louis Roederer has practised biodynamic viticulture on certain plots, respecting the cycles of nature and biodiversity. In 2024, the entire vineyard is certified Haute Valeur Environnementale (HVE) and more than half is certified organic. These practices help to preserve the richness of the soils and to guarantee grapes of exceptional quality.

Winemaking at Maison Louis Roederer

Winemaking at Louis Roederer is an art that rests on meticulous expertise. Each plot is vinified separately, thus preserving the unique identity of each terroir. This "plot-by-plot" approach offers total traceability of the grapes and allows the winemakers to select the finest lots for each cuvée.

The pressing is carried out with great precision so as not to tint the juices with the colour of the grape skins, thus preserving the purity of the flavours. The wines are then fermented in stainless steel tanks and oak vats, following a method that promotes a unique aromatic complexity.

At Roederer, malolactic fermentations are only partial, allowing a great freshness to be preserved in the wines. Furthermore, certain wines are aged on lees for several years, which brings them a remarkable depth and aromatic richness.
