The Prieuré Roch estate works small plots such as Hautes Maizières, Clos Goillote, and Les Suchots in Vosne-Romanée, as well as grands crus such as Clos de Vougeot and Chambertin Clos de Bèze. Farther south, it has the Nuits-Saint-Georges premier cru monopole Le Clos des Corvées and a few ouvrées in Clos des Argilières. It has also acquired 2 hectares in Ladoix, where it produces a white Burgundy wine and a red Burgundy wine.

Domaine Prieuré Roch was established in 1988 by Henri-Frédéric Roch, co-director of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and nephew of Lalou Bize-Leroy. He began with a few parcels acquired in Vosne-Romanée, including Clos Goillotte, a favorite of Roch’s since 1979. After Henry-Frédéric Roch died in 2018, his right-hand man Yannick Champ, who had worked alongside him since the early years, took over the estate, carrying forward its founder’s vision and values.

Among the estate's iconic cuvées, one finds prestigious monopoles: the Clos des Corvées (5.21 hectares in Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru), the Clos des Varoilles (6 hectares in Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru) and the Clos Goillotte (0.55 hectares in Vosne-Romanée), formerly the private property of the Prince de Conti. Owning three monopoles of this scale is an exceptional rarity in Burgundy.

Domaine Prieuré Roch uses no synthetic products, either in the vineyard or during winemaking. Its wines are made from whole clusters without added sulfites, giving them purity and sensuality while faithfully expressing the character of each terroir. This uncompromising approach, rare even in natural viticulture, contributes directly to the distinctive, vibrant character of each cuvée.

Founded in 1988, Domaine Prieuré Roch now encompasses around twenty hectares spread across the multi-century-old terroirs of Gevrey-Chambertin, Vosne-Romanée, Vougeot, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Ladoix and Savigny-lès-Beaune. It is one of the rare properties in Burgundy to shine across so many prestigious appellations of the Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune.

From its very beginnings, Domaine Prieuré Roch has applied ancestral biological and biodynamic methods: the elimination of all chemical treatments in the vineyard, whole-cluster vinification with 100% natural yeasts, gravity-fed pumping-over and foot treading. In place of chemical fertilisers, the soils are nourished with a natural compost made from grape marc, vine shoots and cow manure, while weeding is carried out by hand.

The Grand Cru cuvées from Domaine Prieuré Roch, such as the Chambertin Clos de Bèze from vines of approximately 85 years of age, develop an incomparable concentration and depth. The Grands Crus and Premiers Crus benefit from being cellared for at least 8 to 15 years after their vintage to fully reveal their complexity, while the Villages cuvées such as the Ladoix Le Cloud or the Savigny rouge can be enjoyed earlier, between 3 and 6 years.

History of Domaine Prieuré Roch

The history of Domaine Prieuré Roch began in 1988 with the vision of Henry Frédéric Roch, grandson of Henry Leroy, the legendary founder of the renowned Maison Leroy. This creation forms part of a prestigious family lineage closely linked to the history of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, of which Henry Frédéric Roch became co-manager in 1992 alongside Aubert de Villaine.

The estate's origins date back to the acquisition of the mythical Clos Goillotte, located in the heart of the village of Vosne-Romanée. This exceptional 0.55-hectare parcel, formerly the private property of the Prince de Conti, had remained in the shadows until 1988. Henry Frédéric Roch, then only 26 years old, "fell head over heels in love" with this unique terroir on his first visit in 1979. The acquisition of this jewel marked the beginning of an exceptional winegrowing adventure.

The choice of the name "Prieuré Roch" reflects the founder's humility, as he felt that "Domaine Roch" implied too much personal importance. The inspiration came from a Bordeaux case bearing the name "Château Prieuré-Lychine", with the term "prieuré" evoking a small monastery led by a prior, perfectly symbolizing the spirit of devotion and service that drives the estate.

Henry Frédéric Roch passed away prematurely in 2018 at the age of 56, leaving behind an exceptional winemaking legacy. Yannick Champ, trained by the master since 2002 and co-manager since 2010, now carries on this tradition of excellence with the same passion and exacting standards.

Terroirs and Vines of Domaine Prieuré Roch

The vineyards of Domaine Prieuré Roch extend across exceptional terroirs, each contributing its own distinct character to the range of wines produced. The geological and climatic diversity of these parcels constitutes a truly unique winegrowing heritage in Burgundy.

Clos de Bèze (1.0136 hectares) is one of the oldest walled vineyards in France, created in the 7th century by the monks of Bèze Abbey. Located at an altitude of 240 to 250 meters on a Prémeaux limestone subsoil, this exceptional terroir of brown earth with silt and gravelly scree produces wines of remarkable complexity. The vines, around 85 years old, demonstrate exceptional longevity, resulting in incomparable concentration and depth.

Clos de Vougeot (0.6236 hectares) is part of Burgundy's Cistercian history. Created in 1100 by the monks of Cîteaux Abbey, this legendary vineyard benefits from gravelly, stony terroir in its upper section and more clay-rich soils lower down, while retaining highly free-draining soils throughout. The estate's parcel lies in the prestigious "royal terroir", with vines planted in three phases: 1929, 1949, and 1969.

The Vosne-Romanée parcels form the historic heart of the estate. Clos Goillotte, a true 0.55-hectare jewel, forms a perfect square in the center of the village, in front of the ancient cellars of the Prince de Conti. Les Hautes-Maizières (0.62 hectares) and Les Suchots (1.02 hectares) complete this mosaic of exceptional terroirs, each expressing its unique personality according to exposure, altitude, and soil composition.

The Clos des Corvées monopole in Nuits-Saint-Georges (5.21 hectares) is one of the largest contiguous single-owner estates on the Côte. Bounded by the alignment of flat stones along the chemin des dalles, likely the remains of an ancient Roman road, this terroir produces wines of exceptional power and nobility.

Winemaking at Domaine Prieuré Roch

The winemaking philosophy of Domaine Prieuré Roch is based on a natural, traditional approach that favors the pure expression of terroir. Since the estate was founded in 1988, no synthetic products have been used in either the vineyard or the winery, reflecting an absolute commitment to organic and biodynamic farming.

Vine management is inspired by a profound philosophy in which the winegrower "does not make; he guides". This French notion of "conduite de la vigne" means that it is less about controlling than listening to and supporting the vine, guided by its terroir through the seasons. The aim is not to create the wine, but to bring it into being under the best possible conditions.

The grapes are harvested by hand and meticulously sorted, favoring the healthiest, most concentrated clusters. Vinification is carried out exclusively with whole clusters, a traditional Burgundian method that preserves the integrity of the fruit and encourages gentle tannin extraction. Punch-downs are performed by foot in wooden vats, respecting ancestral techniques.

One of the most remarkable features of the winemaking lies in the complete absence of added sulfites. Abandoned in 1991 during vinification and aging, then entirely eliminated from 1995 onward, sulfites give way to wines that are 100% pure fruit. This revolutionary approach produces wines of exceptional digestibility and incomparable terroir expression.

Aging takes place in oak barrels, often 100% new for the top cuvées, for around 18 months. The wines undergo neither filtration nor fining, thus preserving their authenticity and natural complexity. This natural winemaking produces wines that are relatively pale in color but fabulously intense aromatically.

Grand Crus

Clos de Bèze - A legendary wine of extraordinary complexity, both fresh and concentrated, with velvety, silky tannins. This 1.0136-hectare cuvée, from vines around 85 years old, represents the very essence of this historic terroir created by monks in the 7th century. Purchasing this exceptional cuvée offers the opportunity to discover one of the oldest walled vineyards in France.

Clos de Vougeot - A powerful, precise, "square-shouldered" wine with a Cistercian spirit. From a 0.6236-hectare parcel located in the "royal terroir", this wine expresses the nobility and depth of the terroir created by the monks of Cîteaux in 1100. The vines, planted between 1929 and 1969, bring remarkable complexity to this prestigious cuvée.

Premier Crus

Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos des Corvées Monopole Vieilles Vignes - An exceptional wine made from the exclusive harvest of the finest millerandé clusters. Powerful and sensual, dense and structured, with a very long finish, it embodies the nobility of Nuits-Saint-Georges. This 5.21-hectare monopole cuvée, from exceptionally old vines, represents one of the finest expressions of the Prémeaux terroir.

Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos des Argillières - A very warm, richly textured wine with extremely dense, enveloping tannins, expressing the sensual beauty of Nuits. This 0.69-hectare parcel, organically farmed for years and integrated into the estate in 2009, adjoins Clos des Corvées while differing from it through its steep slope that brushes against the rock.

Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Le Clos des Varoilles Monopole - A cuvée combining the power and elegance of the finest Gevreys with unique freshness. This 6-hectare parcel, taken over in 2020, is the fifth-largest monopole on the Côte. Protected by the Combe Lavaux, it produces wines of great freshness, particularly welcome in heatwave years.

Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots - The classic Vosne-Romanée wine, supple and silky, consistently excellent across vintages. This 1.02-hectare parcel, planted around 50 years ago, lies on the gentle slope of the hillside, below Les Beaumonts and Aux Brûlées, offering a pure and balanced expression of the terroir.

Vosne-Romanée Clos Goillotte Monopole - A wine some describe as "feminine" for its infinite roundness and exceptional delicacy. This 0.55-hectare monopole jewel, formerly the private vineyard of the Prince de Conti, forms a perfect square in the center of the village. Reserved for family consumption until 1988, this exceptional climat has only been accessible to wine lovers since its acquisition by Henry Frédéric Roch.

Vosne-Romanée Hautes-Maizières - An expression of the classic beauty of Vosne-Romanée, endowed with striking finesse. This 0.62-hectare parcel, located midway up the slope below the Premier Cru Les Suchots, produces wines that enhance the typical character of Vosne thanks to vines around 45 years old.

Vosne-Romanée Les Clous - A fleshy, easy-drinking wine from a 0.56-hectare parcel straddling two climats: "La Colombière" and "Le Pré de la Folie". The 25-year-old vines, part of which has recently been restored, produce a rare and sought-after cuvée.
