Frequently Asked Questions

Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande benefits from a rare geographical singularity within the appellation. It possesses one of the finest terroirs in Pauillac, with soils composed of gravel ridges over clay and a microclimate influenced, on one side, by the Gironde Estuary and, on the other, by the Atlantic Ocean. Another notable particularity: of the 73 hectares of vines, 11 hectares lie within the commune of Saint-Julien, which lends this wine an inimitable finesse. This unique configuration, unmatched among neighbouring classified growths, contributes directly to the distinctive elegance recognised in every vintage.

The history of Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is deeply intertwined with the Pichon Longueville family. The original estate was established in the 17th century by Pierre de Mazure de Rauzan. In 1850, the estate was divided among the heirs of Baron Joseph de Pichon Longueville. The share going to his three daughters, including Virginie de Pichon Longueville, wife of Comte Henri de Lalande, became Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande. In 1925, the estate was acquired by the Miailhe brothers, before May-Eliane de Lencquesaing, daughter of Edouard Miailhe, received this beautiful wine estate in 1978 and devoted herself entirely to it, continuing the work of the Comtesse de Lalande. Since 2007, the Rouzaud family, owner of the Maison de Champagne Louis Roederer, has given the château a new impetus, perpetuating a tradition of excellence carried forward by passionate figures.

Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande produces wines built for long ageing. Among the finest vintages are notably 2016, 2015, 2010, 2009, 2005, 2000, 1996, 1986, 1983 and 1982. The 2022 vintage has generated particular enthusiasm: this ultra-refined, floral and elegant wine, with silky tannins, has the potential to equal or even surpass the 2019 and 2016 vintages.

Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is classified as a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé in the official 1855 Bordeaux wine classification. This prestigious rank, which it shares with a handful of chosen Médoc estates, does not, however, fully capture its true standing in the world of wine. Since the late 1970s, the estate's reputation has reached that of a "super second" and a "near first", owing to the consistency of its quality. Wine Spectator has moreover awarded it the title of "Second Cru de Première Classe", a rare recognition that perfectly illustrates its level of excellence.

The variety and proportion of grape varieties at Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande are unique within the appellation. The blend is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon (64%), which provides structure and depth. It is complemented by Merlot (27%), which contributes roundness and suppleness, as well as Cabernet Franc (6%) and Petit Verdot (3%), which add touches of complexity and spice. The proportion of Merlot, unusually generous for a great Pauillac, is one of the estate's historical signatures and partly explains the seductive appeal its wines display from a young age.

The estate also produces a second wine, the Réserve de la Comtesse, offering a more accessible and fruit-forward expression of the terroir. This wine, crafted with the same care as the grand vin, allows one to discover the soul of the estate at an earlier stage of its life. On the gastronomic side, the wines of Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande pair perfectly with roast lamb, beef Wellington, game such as roe deer or hind, as well as slow-cooked dishes such as bœuf bourguignon or lamb navarin. The Réserve de la Comtesse, more supple and more approachable, will be ideal with herb-roasted poultry or a rack of lamb en croûte, from its earliest years in bottle.

History of Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande

The history of Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande begins at the end of the 17th century with Pierre Desmezures de Rauzan, a merchant and manager of the prestigious Latour and Margaux estates. In 1689, he purchased vines located near Château Latour, thus forming the heart of the future Pichon Longueville estate. A few years later, when his daughter Thérèse married Jacques de Pichon, Baron de Longueville, the vines became a dowry, laying the foundations of the wine estate.

In 1850, just before his death, Baron Joseph de Pichon Longueville divided the property among his children. Two-fifths of the estate were allocated to his sons, giving birth to Pichon Baron, while the remaining three-fifths went to his daughters, marking the birth of Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande. The estate takes its name from one of these heirs, Virginie Pichon, Comtesse de Lalande, who had the château built and worked to establish the wine's renown.

The château then passed through several hands before being acquired in 1925 by the Miailhe brothers, Louis and Édouard, wine brokers. They restored the estate to its former glory, and it was their descendant, May-Eliane de Lencquesaing, who, from 1978, propelled Château Pichon Comtesse onto the international stage. In 2007, the Rouzaud family, owners of the Champagne house Louis Roederer, acquired the estate and continued its ascent towards excellence, under the direction of Nicolas Glumineau since 2012.

Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse stands out for its high scores from Robert Parker, with 100/100 for the 1982 and 2016 vintages and 98/100 in 2019, confirming its reputation among the great growths of Pauillac.

Terroirs and Vines of Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande

The terroir of Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is a key element in the expression of its wines. Located between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gironde estuary, to the south of the Pauillac appellation, on the left bank, the vineyard covers an area of 102 hectares. It is distinguished by soils made up of gravel ridges over clay, formed by the retreat of the waters during the Quaternary period. These poor, well-draining soils offer ideal conditions for vine cultivation, allowing optimal ripening of the grapes and a perfect expression of the terroir.

A notable feature is that 11 hectares of vines are located in the neighbouring commune of Saint-Julien, giving the wines of Château Pichon Comtesse a singular dimension. The vines, with an average age of 35 years, are planted at a density of 9,100 vines per hectare, ensuring an exceptional concentration of aromas and flavours.

The grape variety composition is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon (64%), which provides structure and depth to the wines. It is complemented by Merlot (27%), which contributes roundness and suppleness, as well as minority varieties such as Cabernet Franc (6%) and Petit Verdot (3%), which add touches of complexity and spice. The vineyard has been undergoing conversion to organic farming since 2021, affirming the estate's commitment to greater environmental respect and sustainable viticulture.

Winemaking at Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande

Winemaking at Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande follows a meticulous and innovative approach, aimed at extracting the best from the terroir while respecting the integrity of the grapes. Since 2013, the estate has been equipped with an ultramodern vat room, comprising 63 vats, enabling precise plot-by-plot vinification. This system offers the possibility of treating each plot of the vineyard separately, thus preserving the authenticity of the different expressions of the terroir.

One of the innovative aspects of the winemaking process is the use of gravity to handle the grapes, must and wine, thereby avoiding any pumping that could alter the quality of the final product. After alcoholic fermentation, malolactic fermentation takes place in vat, before the wine is placed in barrels for ageing.

The grand vin of Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, of which 50% are new and 50% are one year old. This wood-ageing process, combined with a medium toasting of the barrels, imparts subtle aromas of vanilla and spice to the wines, while preserving the freshness and purity of the fruit.

The Cuvées of Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande

Grand Vin: Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande

The estate's grand vin, Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, is the ultimate expression of finesse and complexity. Predominantly composed of Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine stands out for its depth, silky tannins and exceptional ageing potential. It is often described as sensual, with notes of ripe fruit, tobacco and earth. This wine improves admirably with age, revealing increasingly complex aromas over time.

Second Wine: Réserve de la Comtesse

La Réserve de la Comtesse, the estate's second wine, is produced from the youngest plots of the vineyard. Less structured than the grand vin, it is nonetheless elegant and approachable from an early age. With fine tannins and a more relaxed palate, it represents an excellent introduction to the estate's style, while offering immediate pleasure.

Third Wine: Les Gartieux de Pichon Lalande

Produced in limited quantities, Les Gartieux de Pichon Lalande is the estate's third wine. This wine is crafted from grapes sourced from young vines and specific plots. It reflects the estate's expertise, while being more financially accessible. It is a wine to enjoy earlier, yet it nonetheless retains the qualitative hallmark of the Pauillac terroir.

Experimental White Wine

In 2022, the estate launched an ambitious project with the production of an experimental white wine, crafted from a blend of Chardonnay and Savagnin. This wine is vinified in glass amphorae, preserving the full purity of the aromas. This project reflects the spirit of innovation at Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande and its constant desire to explore new avenues while remaining true to its terroir.
