Vintage 2001

In Bordeaux, the wines of the 2001 vintage are inferior to the year 2000 (in quality and price), but superior to 1999. The wines are marked by acidity (cool and rainy summer, but sunny September). This vintage is considered late, as the merlot maturities were only reached at the end of September, but the Right Bank was very successful with its vintage (in Pomerol 2001 and Saint Emilion 2001). Some disparities in the Médoc 2001 Classified Growths, several of which lack volume and charm. Notable successes in Graves wines (Pessac Léognan 2001), refined and elegant (especially in white wine). Sauternes produced an exceptional 2001 vintage, and the sweet white wines of Bordeaux are particularly rich, of rare opulence, for very long aging. In Burgundy 2001, the year produced a good red wine vintage in Côte de Nuits. The summer was cool and rainy and only really began in August, alternating heat and heavy rain or hail storms, sometimes causing localized damage. The white wines 2001 from the Côte de Beaune are intense and successful, to be enjoyed now.

Our advice for buying a 2001 wine

The structure of the 2001 red wines from the Vosne-Romanée, Gevrey-Chambertin and Nuits st Georges areas may allow them to age. Disappointment for 2001 in Champagne, which will not be remembered for producing a weak vintage diluted by September rains. In the Rhône Valley, the 2001 vintage is better in the North (Côte Rôtie, Cornas) than in the South (Châteauneuf du Pape) where the summer heat hardened the tannins, making them drier. In the Loire Valley, the 2001 vintage produced fine sweet wines (Coteaux du Layon, Vouvray), as well as dry whites in Savennières and Pouilly Fumé. Alsace 2001 produced a late vintage, nonetheless inferior to 2000, but interesting in Rieslings and Pinot Gris. Languedoc Roussillon offers an excellent 2001 vintage yielding powerful, complex, age-worthy wines, such as Grange des Pères 2001.

Fieuzal 2001 and Domaine de Chevalier 2001 are 2 major successes among the 2001 Pessac Léognan whites. In Pomerol: L'Eglise Clinet 2001, Lafleur 2001, Pétrus 2001, Le Pin 2001 and Vieux Château Certan 2001. In Saint Emilion: Angélus 2001, Ausone 2001, Cheval Blanc 2001, Pavie 2001, Troplong Mondot 2001. In Burgundy: many successes in the Gevrey-Chambertin 2001, Nuits st Georges 2001 and Vosne Romanée 2001 areas in red, rank among the finest wines. In white, why not a lovely Meursault 1er cru 2001 or Puligny Montrachet 1er cru 2001 from the Côte de Beaune? For the 2001 Rhône wines: a Côte Rôtie 2001 from Guigal (Mouline 2001 or Landonne 2001) or a Cornas 2001 from Clape or Allemand. From Alsace, an excellent Riesling Clos Ste Hune from Trimbach 2001.
