History of the Domaine de la Romanée Conti

The history of the Domaine de la Romanée Conti stretches back several centuries, bearing witness to the rich viticultural heritage of Burgundy. The estate takes its name from Prince Louis François de Bourbon Conti, who acquired the plot in the 18th century and gave it his name, thus marking the beginning of a legend.

It was in 1869, however, that the estate entered a new era of prosperity, when Jacques Marie Duvault Blochet became its owner. This wine merchant and renowned viticulturist thus fulfilled a lifelong dream by acquiring this exceptional vineyard. From this acquisition onwards, the de Villaine family, descended from Duvault Blochet, has ensured the continuity of the estate. Later, in 1942, the Leroy family became co-owners, adding a new dimension to the family history and the management of the estate. In the 1970s, Lalou Bize-Leroy, former co-owner of the estate and founder of the celebrated Domaine d'Auvenay in 1988, played an essential role in the international renown of the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti through her commitment to quality.

Today, the Domaine de la Romanée Conti is still jointly owned by the descendants of Jacques Marie Duvault Blochet and the Leroy family. Current management is in the hands of Aubert de Villaine and Perrine Fenal, marking the continuity of this family stewardship that places excellence and respect for tradition above all else. 

Terroirs and Vines of the Domaine de la Romanée Conti

The Domaine de la Romanée Conti covers a total surface area of approximately 27.35 hectares, made up exclusively of grand cru vineyards. The terroir is the true cornerstone of these wines' success. La Romanée Conti, a vineyard of barely 1.8 hectares, rests on a soil rich in clay and limestone, lending this cru an incomparable minerality and structure. This ideal location benefits from a south-easterly aspect, encouraging a slow and even ripening of the grapes.

The estate's philosophy is centred on an absolute respect for the soil and nature. The vines are cultivated according to rigorous principles of organic farming, with a transition towards biodynamics begun as early as 2007. The estate's winemakers believe that each plot is alive and requires attentive care to express its full potential. The soils are ploughed by horse to preserve their structure, and chemical treatments are banned in favour of natural preparations.

The grape variety used is exclusively Pinot Noir for the red wines, while the estate's Chardonnays give rise to an exceptional Montrachet, recognised for its elegance and complexity.

Winemaking at the Domaine de la Romanée Conti

Winemaking at the Domaine de la Romanée Conti reflects a philosophy that champions simplicity and respect for natural cycles. Harvesting is carried out by hand with meticulous care, and each bunch is sorted to retain only the healthiest fruit. The grapes are left whole or barely destemmed, in order to preserve the finesse of the tannins and the natural structure of the wine.

The wines are aged in French oak barrels, exclusively new, supplied by the cooperage François Frères. These barrels, crafted from oak sourced from century-old forests such as the Tronçais forest, allow for a subtle contribution of tannins without overpowering the wine.

The ageing process lasts between 16 and 20 months, during which the wines develop their aromatic depth and structure. The exclusive use of new oak gives the wines exceptional complexity and ageing potential. Finally, after several years of maturation in the cellar, the wines reach a fullness that makes them legendary crus.

The Cuvées of the Domaine de la Romanée Conti

The Domaine de la Romanée Conti produces several grand cru cuvées of unrivalled quality, each representing a unique expression of the Vosne Romanée terroir:

La Romanée Conti: The estate's eponymous cuvée and crown jewel, it is produced from a monopole of 1.81 hectares. This wine is often described as one of the greatest reds in the world, with unrivalled finesse and aromatic complexity. Its bouquet, evolving with time, offers notes of red fruits, faded roses and spices.

La Tâche: Another monopole grand cru, covering 6.06 hectares, La Tâche is a wine that is both powerful and elegant. Its firm tannins and impressive structure give it exceptional ageing potential. It is a wine of character that reveals its full splendour after several years of cellaring.

Richebourg: With 3.51 hectares, this grand cru stands out for its richness and firmness. It is often compared to a musketeer, with a contained strength and robustness that blossoms over time.

Romanée Saint Vivant: Produced from 5.29 hectares, this grand cru is a seductive wine in which grace and power blend perfectly. Behind its apparent elegance lies a great depth.

Grands Échézeaux: This grand cru of 3.53 hectares is more complex than its neighbour Échézeaux. It expresses itself with a power and subtlety that make it comparable to the greatest wines of Burgundy.

Échézeaux: Covering 4.67 hectares, this grand cru is often the most accessible and earliest-maturing wine from the estate. It captivates with its tenderness and clarity of expression.

Montrachet: In white, the estate produces a Montrachet Grand Cru over 0.67 hectares, considered one of the greatest white wines in the world. It is of unparalleled complexity and elegance, with remarkable power and minerality.

Corton: Since 2009, the estate has also held plots on the Corton hill, producing wines under the appellations Corton, Corton-Bressandes, Corton-Clos-du-Roi and Corton-Renardes. These cuvées, renowned for their elegance and power, complement the estate's exceptional collection.

Corton-Charlemagne: This Chardonnay grand cru is one of the most prestigious in Burgundy, with a worldwide reputation for its perfect balance of freshness, power and complexity. Its limestone terroir gives this wine a great minerality and an exceptional ageing potential.

Certain vintages from the Domaine de la Romanée Conti are particularly sought after by enthusiasts and collectors. Here are some examples of exceptional vintages to explore: 1945, 1962, 1978, 1985, 1990, 1999, 2005, 2009, 2010, 2015, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2020.
