Joseph Leflaive replanted the vineyard following the Phylloxera crisis in 1920, which was subsequently managed by his 2 sons (Jo and Vincent), then by Anne Claude Leflaive (who passed away in 2015), and now by Brice de la Morandière. With an area of 24 hectares planted exclusively with white grapes (100% Chardonnay), the vines are set on clay-limestone soils on the lower slopes and limestone soils on the upper slopes. Domaine Leflaive has been biodynamic-certified since 1997.

Frequently Asked Questions

Domaine Leflaive is based in Puligny-Montrachet, at the heart of the Côte de Beaune in Burgundy. The Leflaive family's presence in Puligny dates back to 1717. It was nonetheless in 1920 that the estate truly came into its own, when Joseph Leflaive took charge of the family vineyard with an ambitious programme of replanting, expansion and development, before commercialising his wines under his own name. Since then, four generations of the family have succeeded one another in making this estate a world reference for white Burgundy.

Winemaking at Domaine Leflaive is rooted in a philosophy of non-intervention and precision at every stage. Selective hand harvesting is followed by gentle pressing and slow fermentation. To ensure that the aromatic richness of the must is not diminished, it is left unfiltered. During ageing, the Leflaive family exercises great patience in the use of oak, with the proportion of new barrels kept deliberately low as a matter of principle — only the Grands Crus spend a little more time in new wood. In practice, fermentation takes place 25% in cement eggs and 75% in oak barrels, of which 15% are new; after 12 months in barrels, the wine is then aged for 6 months in vat where it is prepared for bottling.

The history of Domaine Leflaive is marked by exceptional vintages that have forged its legend in the great years of the past, such as 1978, 1985, 1990 and 1996. On the recent vintages side, the finest years at Domaine Leflaive in Puligny-Montrachet are 2022, 2021, 2019, 2018 and 2017. The 2022 vintage is particularly noteworthy: it reflects the sunny character of the year with notes of ripe stone fruits and citrus, while offering depth and complexity, with saline, flint and fresh white flower touches, for a silky and approachable texture. In contrast, cooler years such as 2021 express more of the crystalline minerality and precision that are the stylistic signature of the estate. To build a well-balanced cellar, alternating between sunny vintages and cooler years allows one to enjoy the full expressive range of Domaine Leflaive.

Domaine Leflaive oversees 4.8 hectares of Grands Crus within the appellations Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet, Chevalier-Montrachet and Montrachet. These cuvées, sourced from plots at the heart of the Côte de Beaune, represent the quintessence of Burgundian Chardonnay. Rare, sought-after and produced in limited quantities, they are aimed at enthusiasts in search of the most accomplished expressions of the Puligny-Montrachet terroir.

Ageing potential is one of the key characteristics that sets Domaine Leflaive apart from ordinary Burgundian producers. It varies, however, according to the appellation's ranking. The Mâconnais cuvées, such as Pouilly-Fuissé, display an ageing potential of 3 to 5 years and are best appreciated in their youth for their fruity freshness. The Premiers Crus of Puligny-Montrachet, more structured, reward greater patience. The Grands Crus such as Chevalier-Montrachet display an ageing potential of 10 to 15 years, and reveal their full complexity after several years of cellaring under optimal storage conditions.

Domaine Leflaive owns several Premier Cru vineyards: Puligny-Montrachet Les Pucelles (2.8 ha), Le Clavoillon (4.8 ha), Les Folatières (1.2 ha) and Les Combettes (0.73 ha), as well as Meursault Sous le Dos d'Âne. Among them, the Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru Les Pucelles notably took part in the famous Judgment of Paris, ranking among the ten French and Californian wines evaluated during that historic tasting. Each Premier Cru expresses its own identity, combining aromatic richness with Burgundian elegance.

History of Domaine Leflaive

Founded in 1717 by Claude Leflaive, the Domaine Leflaive truly came into its own at the beginning of the 20th century under the impetus of Joseph Leflaive (1870–1953). A graduate of the École Polytechnique who participated in the construction of the first French submarine, he chose to devote his life to viticulture following the phylloxera crisis. From 1920, he embarked on an ambitious programme of replanting and plot acquisition, laying the foundations for an estate that would become a global reference. Under the direction of his sons, Vincent and Jo, then of Anne-Claude Leflaive, the estate rose to the pinnacle thanks to its pioneering commitment to biodynamics from 1996. Since 2015, Brice de La Morandière, great-grandson of Joseph, has perpetuated this heritage with a pursuit of excellence and respect for Burgundian traditions. Every bottle from Domaine Leflaive is the fruit of a centuries-old history, blending ancestral expertise with a modern vision.

Terroirs and Vines of Domaine Leflaive

Domaine Leflaive cultivates 24 hectares in Puligny-Montrachet, including 4.8 hectares of Grands Crus and 10.8 hectares of Premiers Crus, all dedicated to chardonnay, the emblematic grape variety of Burgundy. The clay-limestone soils, rich in limestone and traces of mineral elements such as iron, magnesium and boron, confer a unique signature to the wines, marked by a vibrant minerality and natural elegance. The Grands Crus, such as Montrachet and Chevalier-Montrachet, benefit from historic plots with ideal mid-slope exposures, with draining slopes that promote limited yields and exceptional concentration. The Premiers Crus, such as Les Pucelles and Le Clavoillon, express the diversity of the mid-slope terroirs, where the finely clay-limestone soils produce refined and complex wines. Biodynamics, practised rigorously for more than 25 years, strengthens the vitality of the soils, notably through techniques such as horse ploughing on the Grands Crus to avoid compaction and promote biodiversity.

Vinification at Domaine Leflaive

The vinification at Domaine Leflaive is guided by a philosophy of absolute respect for the fruit and the terroir, where every step is orchestrated to preserve the integrity and natural expression of the grapes. The harvests, exclusively manual with rigorous sorting, are followed by gentle pneumatic pressing and a 24-hour settling, then cold débourbage to eliminate impurities without altering the material. The fermentations, carried out with indigenous yeasts for maximum authenticity, take place in oak barrels (25% new for the Grands Crus, 100% for the Montrachet) over 12 months, followed by 6 months in stainless steel vats for natural stabilisation on fine lees. This lengthy and meticulous process, without excessive intervention or artifice, allows the wines to develop unparalleled aromatic complexity and elegance, with moderate use of sulphur to protect the musts. The modern facilities, such as the egg-shaped cellar built in 2012 with a wood and straw structure for natural insulation and carbon neutrality, offer an optimal environment for ageing, promoting gentle and harmonious maturation.

The Cuvées of Domaine Leflaive

Domaine Leflaive offers a range of exceptional cuvées, reflecting the diversity and richness of Burgundian terroirs.

Grand Cru Montrachet: Produced from a plot of 8.21 ares in Chassagne-Montrachet (planted in 1960), this exceptional wine (only 300 bottles per year) is vinified in new Allier oak barrels, followed by 6 months in one-wine barrels. Its aromas of honey, ripe fruit and opulent texture make it a prized choice for collectors.

Grand Cru Chevalier-Montrachet: Sourced from 1.83 hectares across three plots (planted between 1955 and 1980), this chardonnay offers a vibrant minerality and remarkable finesse. Vinified in 25% new oak barrels (Vosges and Allier), it is ideal for purchasing a wine for long ageing.

Grand Cru Bâtard-Montrachet: Sourced from 1.91 hectares spread across four plots (1962–1989), this wine combines richness and freshness, with notes of white fruits and a powerful structure. It is vinified in 25% new oak barrels, perfect for lovers of great Burgundian whites.

Grand Cru Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet: Sourced from a 1.15-hectare plot (1958–1959), this wine captivates with its delicacy and floral aromas. Its ageing in 25% new oak barrels confers a distinctive elegance, ideal for connoisseurs.

Premier Cru Meursault Sous le Dos d'Âne: Located on the border of Puligny-Montrachet, this wine sourced from clay-limestone soils expresses notes of ripe fruit and a silky texture, with 18 months of ageing. A refined option for discovering neighbouring terroirs.

Premier Cru Puligny-Montrachet Les Combettes: Produced from 0.73 hectares, this wine reveals floral aromas and a fine minerality, typical of mid-slope terroirs. Its ageing in oak barrels enhances its natural elegance.

Premier Cru Puligny-Montrachet Le Clavoillon: Sourced from 4.8 hectares, this emblematic Premier Cru offers a generosity balanced by mineral freshness. Vinified with care, it embodies the Leflaive style in all its splendour.
