Jean Louis Chave estate wines: buy at the best price

The CHAVE family has reigned over Hermitage since the end of the 15th century, and Jean-Louis Chave simply represents the 16th generation of winemakers of this estate (he succeeded Gérard). It is fair to say that the estate embodies the magnificence of Hermitage wines for lovers of great wines. The estate has 26 hectares of vines (including 5 hectares of white), and produces red and white Hermitage of the very highest calibre.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Domaine Jean-Louis Chave is one of the oldest continuously active wine dynasties in France. Its history begins in 1481, when Charles Chave received a plot of vines on the Bachasson hillside, in Saint-Joseph, as a reward for services rendered to a local lord. Since then, the estate has been passed down from father to son without interruption over sixteen generations. Jean-Louis Chave, who succeeded his father Gérard, continues to uphold this tradition of excellence at the heart of the Northern Rhône Valley.

The Cuvée Cathelin is the absolute prestige wine of the Domaine Jean-Louis Chave, produced only in vintages deemed truly exceptional. This ultra-rare cuvée represents a variation of the red Hermitage with the same lieux-dits but at different percentages. It is crafted only in exceptional years, for example in 2003 and 2009 for the most recent ones. Its confidential nature and extraordinary quality make it one of the most sought-after bottles in the entire Rhône Valley.

The Domaine Jean-Louis Chave adopts a resolutely traditional and low-interventionist approach. It focuses on controlling yields, prohibiting all herbicides and artificial fertilisers, and harvesting as late as possible in order to achieve optimal ripeness. The harvest from each plot is vinified and aged separately, allowing each terroir to express its full individuality before the final blend. This working philosophy, passed down from generation to generation, gives the wines their remarkable balance and great ageing potential.

The Domaine Jean-Louis Chave is primarily known for its Hermitage wines, both red and white. It owns 15 hectares of vines on the Hermitage hill, of which 10 hectares are planted with Syrah for the reds and 5 hectares with Marsanne and Roussanne for the whites. The domaine also produces wines in Saint-Joseph under the Offerus label, as well as a more accessible négociant range, the J.L. Chave Sélection, with wines in Crozes-Hermitage and Côtes-du-Rhône.

The Jean-Louis Chave estate relies on emblematic grape varieties from the northern Rhône. For the red Hermitage, Syrah from the Bessards plot forms the backbone of the blend, thanks to its steep granite slopes that provide structure and depth. For the white Hermitage, Marsanne accounts for approximately 80% of the blend, complemented by 20% Roussanne, from vines averaging over 60 years old. Mastery of these blends is at the heart of the estate's identity.

The Domaine Jean-Louis Chave refers to the family estate producing the great red and white Hermitage wines from their own plots. The J.L. Chave Sélection range, launched in the 1990s, constitutes a négociant line allowing enthusiasts to discover the Chave universe at more accessible prices. It notably includes the "Mon Cœur" Côtes-du-Rhône, sourced from selected plots in Vinsobres, Visan, Buisson and Estargues, as well as the "Silène" Crozes-Hermitage. Even in these entry-level cuvées, the quality standards inherent to the Chave family remain uncompromising.

History of Domaine Jean-Louis Chave

The history of Domaine Jean-Louis Chave is an epic story engraved in the granitic stones of the Rhône Valley, beginning in 1481 when Charles Chave received a plot of vines on the Bachasson hillside in Saint-Joseph as a reward for services rendered to a local lord of Yserand. This donation marks the starting point of an unbroken dynasty, passed from father to son over 16 generations, making the Chaves the oldest continuous wine-growing family in France. Originally, the family cultivated exclusively in Saint-Joseph, producing wines for the local community and the Church, in a landscape of steep hillsides where Syrah and white grape varieties coexist harmoniously. In the 19th century, the phylloxera epidemic ravaged the vines, forcing the Chaves to migrate to Mauves, on the west bank of the Rhône, where they settled permanently. It was during this period that they invested in the mythical hill of the Hermitage, gradually acquiring key plots such as Les Bessards and Péléat, to become one of the largest individual owners of the appellation, with 11% of the total surface area.

In the 20th century, Gérard Chave, Jean-Louis's father, took the reins in the 1950s, consolidating the estate's reputation through an obsessive pursuit of quality. Jean-Louis, born in 1968, joined his father in 1992 after studying oenology at Davis and completing an MBA in the United States, bringing a modern vision while respecting traditions. The 1990s saw a bold renaissance: massive replanting of the ancestral Bachasson slopes, abandoned since the phylloxera epidemic, with the construction of stone walls and paths to tame these vertiginous 60-degree gradients. In 2009, the acquisition of Clos Florentin marked a strategic diversification, aimed at restoring a historic site devastated by disease. Today, the estate covers 13 hectares in Hermitage and 7 in Saint-Joseph, complemented by a négociant line, J.L. Chave Sélection, for more accessible wines. This saga, praised by figures such as Andrew Jefford who sees it as "the royal family of French wine", reflects a cosmopolitan humility: trainees from around the world flock to learn from Jean-Louis, whose approach — servant of the terroir, the vintage and nature — elevates Chave's wines to cult status.

Terroirs and Vines of Domaine Jean-Louis Chave

The terroirs of Domaine Jean-Louis Chave are a geological treasure, sculpted by millennia of alpine erosion and the course of the Rhône, offering a mosaic of soils that give the wines their depth and singularity. Dominated by decomposed granite, emblematic of the Hermitage, these south-facing slopes reach extreme gradients, requiring titanic labour: 1.5 people per hectare to maintain these natural amphitheatres sheltered from cold northern winds. The estate owns 14 plots spread across nine Hermitage climats, including the mythical Les Bessards, a pure granitic precipice providing the backbone of the reds, with its centenary vines bearing tiny, concentrated berries. Le Méal, at the centre of the hill, brings flesh and warmth through its glacial galets; Beaume, with its spectacular fault and sandy red clays, injects elegance and acidity; while Les Doignières, sandier in nature, add a touch of punch. L'Ermite, a meeting point of soils (loess, friable granite, alpine deposits), offers freshness and minerality; Péléat, a family monopole acquired in 1930, excels in centenary Marsanne for the whites, with its talcy and spicy notes; Rocoules and Maison Blanche complete the picture with chalky richness and creamy fruit.

In Saint-Joseph, the 7 hectares are concentrated on the ancestral slopes of Bachasson, near Lemps, where Jean-Louis has restored terraces abandoned since 1900, replanting 5 hectares of Syrah on granite identical to that of the Hermitage. These east and south-east facing slopes, once linked to the hill opposite before a whim of the river, produce wines of stunning purity. The Clos Florentin, acquired in 2009, reconnects with phylloxera history by restoring its steep plots. The viticulture, in the process of obtaining organic and biodynamic certification, is rooted in ancestral practices: ploughing by horse or pickaxe to aerate the soils, horse manure fertiliser, lunar pruning, and rigorous selection of grapes. Without chemical herbicides, these low-yield vines, often below 30 hl/ha, produce physiologically ripe fruit, harvested late by hand. This Rhône Valley terroir, combining granitic minerality, varied microclimates and optimal exposure, is the secret behind Chave's wines: powerful yet refined, they capture the soul of the hill.

Winemaking at Domaine Jean-Louis Chave

Winemaking at Domaine Jean-Louis Chave is a minimalist art, in which human intervention steps aside to let the terroir and the vintage sing, in a modest 16th-century cellar in Mauves, with ideal hygrometric conditions. True to a traditional philosophy, Jean-Louis rejects selected yeasts, filtration and excessive manipulation, opting for an instinctive approach forged by five centuries of experience. The harvests, manual and late, separate each plot: the grapes arrive in crates, scrupulously sorted to retain only the finest. For the reds, predominantly Syrah, an increasing proportion of whole bunches (up to 20-30% in recent years) brings freshness and structure; maceration, through gentle punch-downs, lasts 3 to 4 weeks, followed by 18 months of ageing in French oak barrels (10-20% new maximum, to preserve finesse). The assemblage, an annual masterpiece, brings together the seven climats around the Bessards, creating a tailor-made balance — an iterative process, tasted hundreds of times, in which up to 20% of the barrels are set aside for the sake of purity.

The whites, dominated by Marsanne (80-85%) and Roussanne (15-20%), are born from whole-bunch pressing, with one third fermented in barrel (20% new) and the remainder in stainless steel tanks to capture the essential glycerol, the source of their unctuousness without heaviness. Aged for 12-14 months separately, they are assembled during a second year of monthly tastings, revealing a bitter power and a saline finish that blossoms after 20 years. The Vin de Paille, a rare nectar, dries the grapes for three months on straw before a slow 24-month fermentation, for absolute indulgence (150 g/L residual sugar). At J.L. Chave Sélection, the négociant selects grapes from friend vignerons, vinified with the same rigour for accessible cuvées. This Rhône Valley winemaking, biodynamic in spirit, produces legendary age-worthy wines: austere in youth, they gain in nuance and volume after 10 years.

The Cuvées of Domaine Jean-Louis Chave

The cuvées of Domaine Jean-Louis Chave form an enchanting spectrum, from the monumental Hermitage to the accessible gems of the Sélection.

The Hermitage Rouge, the flagship cuvée, assembles Syrah from Les Bessards (granitic backbone, violet and meat), Méal (glacial flesh), Beaume (clayey elegance), Doignières (sandy punch), Ermite (loess minerality), Péléat and Vercandières. Powerful and sapid, it unfolds black fruits, olive and spices, requiring 10 years of cellaring for its legendary finesse — an iconic assemblage wine, the very essence of the appellation.

The Hermitage Blanc, heroic in nature, unites centenary Marsanne from Péléat (talc and spices), Rocoules (chalky richness, 50%), Ermite (freshness, 20%) and Maison Blanche (creamy galets, 5%). Vinified with precision under wood, it combines rare power, noble bitterness and the absence of aggressive acidity, revealing apricot, hazelnut and lime after a 5-7 year hibernation — an immortal white, rivalling the greatest.

The Cuvée Cathelin, ultra-rare (only in great vintages such as 1990 and 2003), honours the painter Bernard Cathelin: a more intense variation of the Hermitage Rouge, with more Bessards and increased new oak, offering explosive richness and superhuman longevity — a collector's item impossible to find, even greater than the classic.

The Vin de Paille d'Hermitage (e.g. 1990s), Marsanne-Roussanne dried on straw for a candied nectar (date, raisin, dried apple), tangy despite 150 g/L of residual sugar — absolute indulgence, a historical echo.

In Saint-Joseph, the Domaine Rouge (from Mauves, Tournon, etc., granite) offers purity and balance: blackberry, olive, violet, firm structure — an underestimated benchmark. The Clos Florentin is refined and deep, restoring a phylloxera-era clos. Bachasson, the fruit of the colossal replanting (stone walls, paths), promises an abyssal Syrah from the steep slopes.

The J.L. Chave Sélection broadens access: Offerus Saint-Joseph (grapes from friends at top spots, aged in barrels and cement), cherry and lavender harmony, a reliable choice.
