History of the Domaine de la Romanée Conti

The history of the Domaine de la Romanée Conti dates back several centuries, bearing witness to the viticultural wealth of Burgundy. The estate takes its name from Prince Louis François de Bourbon Conti, who acquired the parcel in the 18th century and gave it his name, thus marking the beginning of a legend.

However, it was in 1869 that the estate entered a new era of prosperity, when Jacques Marie Duvault Blochet became its owner. The latter, a wine merchant and renowned winegrower, thus realized a lifelong dream by acquiring this exceptional vineyard. From this acquisition, the de Villaine family, descendants of Duvault Blochet, ensured the estate's continuity. Later, in 1942, the Leroy family became co-owners, thus adding a new dimension to the family history and estate management. In the 1970s, Lalou Bize-Leroy, former co-owner of the estate and founder of the renowned Domaine d'Auvenay in 1988, played an essential role in the international renown of the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti through her commitment to quality.

Today, the Domaine de la Romanée Conti is still jointly owned by the descendants of Jacques Marie Duvault Blochet and the Leroy family. Current management is provided by Aubert de Villaine and Perrine Fenal, marking the continuity of this family management that prioritizes excellence and respect for traditions. 

Terroirs and Vineyards of the Domaine de la Romanée Conti

The Domaine de la Romanée Conti extends over a total surface area of approximately 27.35 hectares, exclusively distributed among grands crus. The terroir is the true cornerstone of these wines' success. La Romanée Conti, a vineyard of barely 1.8 hectares, rests on soil rich in clay and limestone, providing this cru with incomparable minerality and structure. This ideal location benefits from a south-east exposure, favoring slow and homogeneous ripening of the grapes.

The estate's philosophy centers on absolute respect for the soil and nature. The vines are cultivated according to rigorous principles of organic farming, with a transition to biodynamics initiated as early as 2007. The estate's winegrowers consider that each parcel is alive and requires attentive care to express its full potential. The soils are plowed by horse to preserve their structure, and chemical treatments are banned in favor of natural preparations.

The grape variety used is exclusively Pinot Noir for red wines, while the estate's Chardonnays give birth to an exceptional Montrachet, recognized for its elegance and complexity.

Vinification at the Domaine de la Romanée Conti

Vinification at the Domaine de la Romanée Conti reflects a philosophy that advocates simplicity and respect for natural cycles. Harvesting is carried out manually with meticulous care, and each bunch is sorted to keep only the healthiest fruit. The grapes are not destemmed, or very little, to preserve the finesse of the tannins and the natural structure of the wine.

The wines are aged in French oak barrels, exclusively new, supplied by the François Frères cooperage. These barrels, made from oaks from centuries-old forests such as Tronçais, provide a subtle contribution of tannins without excessively marking the wine.

The aging process lasts between 16 and 20 months, during which the wines develop their aromatic depth and structure. The exclusive use of new oak imparts complexity and exceptional aging potential to the wines. Finally, after several years of maturation in the cellar, the wines reach a fullness that makes them legendary vintages.

The Cuvées of the Domaine de la Romanée Conti

The Domaine de la Romanée Conti produces several grand cru cuvées of unparalleled quality, each representing a unique expression of the Vosne Romanée terroir:

La Romanée Conti: The eponymous cuvée and jewel of the estate, it is produced on a monopole of 1.81 hectares. This wine is often described as one of the greatest reds in the world, with unequaled finesse and aromatic complexity. Its bouquet, evolving over time, offers notes of red fruits, faded roses and spices.

La Tâche: Another grand cru monopole, covering 6.06 hectares, La Tâche is a wine that is both powerful and elegant. Its firm tannins and impressive structure give it long aging potential. It is a wine of character that reveals all its splendor after a few years of aging.

Richebourg: With 3.51 hectares, this grand cru distinguishes itself by its richness and firmness. It is often compared to a musketeer, with contained strength and robustness that blossoms over time.

Romanée Saint Vivant: Produced on 5.29 hectares, this grand cru is a seductive wine, where grace and power blend perfectly. Behind its apparent elegance lies great depth.

Grands Échézeaux: This 3.53-hectare grand cru is more complex than its neighbor Échézeaux. It expresses itself with power and subtlety that make it comparable to the greatest wines of Burgundy.

Échézeaux: Covering 4.67 hectares, this grand cru is often the most accessible and early-drinking wine of the estate. It charms with its tenderness and clarity of expression.

Montrachet: In white, the estate produces a Montrachet Grand Cru on 0.67 hectares, considered one of the greatest white wines in the world. It is of unparalleled complexity and elegance, with remarkable power and minerality.

Corton: Since 2009, the estate has also owned parcels on the Corton hill, producing wines under the Corton, Corton-Bressandes, Corton-Clos-du-Roi and Corton-Renardes appellations. These cuvées, renowned for their elegance and power, complete the estate's exceptional collection.

Corton-Charlemagne: This Chardonnay grand cru is one of the most prestigious in Burgundy, with worldwide renown for its perfect balance between freshness, power and complexity. Its limestone terroir gives this wine great minerality and exceptional aging potential.

Certain vintages of the Domaine de la Romanée Conti are particularly sought after by enthusiasts and collectors. Here are some examples of exceptional vintages to explore: 1945, 1962, 1978, 1985, 1990, 1999, 2005, 2009, 2010, 2015, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2020.
