The Coche-Dury estate, based in Meursault, is unanimously recognised as one of the absolute benchmarks of the Côte de Beaune. Jean-François Coche, followed by his son Raphaël, established a style built on very low yields, rigorous viticulture and barrel ageing managed with rare precision. Their Meursault and Corton-Charlemagne achieve an aromatic complexity and tension that place them at the very top of the appellation, with an exceptional ageing potential.

The Meursault wines from Domaine Coche-Dury are great ageing wines that rarely express their full potential before 8 to 12 years after the harvest. The Premiers Crus often require even more patience. At maturity, they reveal an aromatic palette of exceptional depth, blending candied citrus, hazelnut, flint and buttery notes of great elegance. Decanting for one hour is strongly recommended for young vintages.

The Coche-Dury estate cultivates approximately 10 hectares of vines spread across several appellations in the Côte de Beaune. This deliberately modest size allows for very precise plot-by-plot monitoring, with viticulture close to organic farming without claiming any certification. The estate's philosophy is built on the expression of terroir above all: minimal interventions in the cellar, indigenous yeasts, and barrel ageing calibrated to enhance the material without masking it.

The Coche-Dury estate produces a focused range of appellations in the Côte de Beaune, primarily whites. These include Bourgogne Aligoté, Meursault Villages, several Meursault Premier Cru (including Les Perrières and Les Genevrières), as well as the highly sought-after Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru. The estate also produces a few reds, notably a Volnay Premier Cru and an Auxey-Duresses, more discreet but equally carefully crafted.

Among the most remarkable vintages from Domaine Coche-Dury, connoisseurs regularly cite 1992, 1996, 2002, 2010, 2014 and 2017, which combine freshness, density and exemplary balance. The 2019 and 2020 vintages are also generating a great deal of enthusiasm for their restrained richness. The domaine's style nonetheless transcends difficult vintages, from which Raphaël Coche often extracts the best through his work in the vineyard.

While the reputation of Domaine Coche-Dury rests above all on its white wines, its reds deserve far greater attention than their discreet profile might suggest. The Volnay Premier Cru and the Auxey-Duresses rouge are crafted with the same meticulous care as the whites: low yields, precise vinification, and controlled ageing. These wines offer a beautiful expression of Burgundian Pinot Noir, with a natural elegance and drinkability that appeal to enthusiasts in search of the domaine's confidential hidden gems.

History of Domaine Coche-Dury

Domaine Coche-Dury traces its roots to the early 20th century, founded by the grandfather of Jean-François Coche. It was not until after the interwar period, in the 1960s, that the estate truly began to take flight. Georges Coche, Jean-François's father, initiated a radical change by marketing the wine in bottles rather than in bulk. 

In 1975, Jean-François Coche officially took over the family estate and married Odile Dury, thus forming Domaine Coche-Dury. He chose to perfect the quality of the wines rather than expand the vineyard plots. This meticulous work led to the worldwide recognition of the estate, particularly for its white wines, which represent the purest expression of Chardonnay. In 2010, having spent decades elevating the estate to the very top, Jean-François passed the torch to his son Raphaël, who brilliantly carries on this quest for excellence.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Domaine Coche-Dury

The estate covers 10.5 hectares, of which 9 are located in Meursault, one of the most renowned appellations for Chardonnay. In addition to its plots in Meursault, the estate has vines in Pommard, Auxey-Duresses, Puligny-Montrachet, and on the Grand Cru Corton-Charlemagne.

The secret to the quality of Domaine Coche-Dury's wines lies in its rigorous approach to viticulture. Raphaël Coche, at the helm of the estate since 2010, has opted for a return to manual ploughing and a reduction in yields, thereby ensuring the concentration and purity of the grapes. Respect for the terroir, combined with the age of the vines (some dating from the 1950s), lends the estate's wines a unique depth and complexity. 

The estate is committed to environmentally responsible farming. No pesticides are used, and the soils are tilled to maintain a natural balance. These exemplary viticultural practices allow the true essence of Burgundian terroirs to be captured.

Vinifications of Domaine Coche-Dury

The winemaking at Domaine Coche-Dury is a traditional process, marked by meticulous attention to detail. After the harvest, the grapes are gently pressed to avoid any aggressive extraction. Fermentation takes place in oak barrels, a portion of which are renewed each year, but without excess, so as not to overpower the wine's natural aromas.

The white wines are aged on lees for approximately 18 to 22 months, a process that preserves freshness while developing a rich and complex texture. This lees ageing is one of the estate's signatures, imparting characteristic toasted and mineral notes, particularly appreciated in great vintages such as the Corton-Charlemagne.

The red wines, though less well known than the whites, also benefit from ageing in oak barrels, with a lower proportion of new wood. These wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, are elegant, fresh and well-balanced, offering an impressive ageing potential.
