Wine 1983

Marked by a very hot and humid summer in Bordeaux that led to some rot, the warm and dry months of September and October nonetheless allowed the production of a quality vintage. For the wines of Margaux, 1983 was an even better year than 1982, yielding great or very good wines. Fine successes in Grand Cru Classé wines of Pauillac and, to a lesser extent, in Saint Julien and Saint Estèphe. In white Bordeaux, a good vintage with notable successes. Excellent Sauternes and Barsac, with an exceptional Yquem, and very fine Climens, De Fargues, Gillette, Lafaurie-Peyraguey and Rieussec. In Burgundy, the 1983 vintage was complicated by difficult weather (hail in May and a hot, very humid summer, leading to rot). Some 1983 red Burgundy wines that were unpleasant when young (astringent) found their balance with age, and among white Burgundy wines, full-bodied wines with good acidity can show good form, as in the Chablis Grands Crus.
