All wines from the Pomerol appellation in Bordeaux

Located less than 30km east of Bordeaux in the part of the vineyard called Libournais (Right Bank of the Dordogne), the Pomerol appellation (AOC) extends over an area of 813 hectares across the communes of Pomerol and Libourne. Pomerol is one of the most prestigious AOCs but curiously, no official classification of Pomerol wines has ever been carried out (unlike the grands crus classés of 1855 in the Médoc, for example). However, the Pomerol appellation enjoys a worldwide reputation, as the most famous of all great Pomerol wines is the legendary Château Pétrus, often considered the finest red wine from Bordeaux.

The TOP appellation of Bordeaux

The typicality of the Pomerol appellation lies notably in the small size of the appellation (7 times smaller than St Emilion), with nearly 140 estates (6ha on average per estate). Also, the dominance of the Merlot grape variety (close to 79%) in the blend of Pomerol red wines is another distinctive feature (ahead of Cabernet Franc (15%), Cabernet Sauvignon (5%), and Malbec (1%)). The soil typology is complex, because apart from the famous Pétrus, which sits on an exceptional clay buttonhole, the other châteaux have soils ranging from thick to very fine gravel, resting on a sandy or sandy-clay base. Finally, the Moueix family, owner of Pétrus and other highly renowned estates, has greatly contributed to the recognition of the quality of Pomerol wines, and thus to their success...

Thanks to Merlot, Pomerol red wines are often approachable at a younger age (between 4 and 8 years) and prove to be more supple and opulent than wines composed essentially of Cabernet Sauvignon. The great red wines of Pomerol know how to be juicy and voluptuous in great vintages, and are sought after by enthusiasts. The aging capacity of a great Pomerol is generally very good (10 to 30 years). In terms of food and wine pairing, the almost unctuous profile of Pomerol red wines will allow their flavors of black cherry, raspberry, or sometimes truffle to be paired with duck, a woodcock stuffed with foie gras and truffle, beef with Périgueux sauce, a Tournedos Rossini, or even a cheese such as aged Gouda.

Among the best vintages of the Pomerol appellation are: 2015, 2014, 2010, 2009, 2005, 2001, 2000, 1998, 1995, 1990, 1989, 1988, 1985, 1982, 1975, 1971, 1970, 1964, 1961. The immense Petrus has obtained 10 times the supreme score of 100/100 Parker in 2015, 2010, 2009, 2000, 1990, 1989, 1961, 1947, 1929, 1921. Lafleur 5 times: 2005, 2000, 1982, 1947, 1945. Le Pin and L'Eglise Clinet 3 times each, Clinet and Latour à Pomerol 2 times each, and L'Evangile and La Violette once each. This veritable shower of exceptional scores, awarded on such a limited terroir, has contributed to maintaining the worldwide reputation of the Pomerol appellation.
