History of Domaine Joseph Roty

The history of Domaine Joseph Roty is deeply rooted in the terroir of Gevrey-Chambertin, where the Roty family has cultivated the vine since 1710, under the reign of Louis XIV. Eleven generations have succeeded one another, owners of their vines since 1817, making this estate one of the oldest winegrowing lineages of the Côte de Nuits. It was in the 1960s that Joseph Roty founded the eponymous estate from the vines inherited from his grandfather, giving birth to a signature that would quickly become a cult among discerning enthusiasts.

Upon his passing in 2008, his two sons Philippe and Pierre-Jean took the reins of the estate together. The premature death of Philippe in 2015 left Pierre-Jean alone at the helm of the estate, which he manages with the same rigour and legendary discretion as his father. The estate, which exports more than 80% of its production, refuses any ostentatious communication yet benefits from considerable international renown, regularly celebrated by the Parker guide, Vinous, Burghound and critics worldwide.

Terroirs and Vines of Domaine Joseph Roty

The vineyard of Domaine Joseph Roty extends over approximately 12 hectares spread across the villages of Gevrey-Chambertin and Marsannay-la-Côte, at the heart of the prestigious Côte de Nuits in Burgundy. The great specificity of the estate lies in its heritage of old vines, whose average age is around 65 years, with certain plots reaching 120 years and more. The most emblematic vines, those of the Charmes-Chambertin Très Vieilles Vignes, were planted in 1881: approximately 60% of the original plants still survive today, yielding grapes of remarkable concentration and complexity.

The typical clay-limestone soils of the Côte de Nuits, combined with privileged exposures, offer an exceptional terroir for Pinot Noir, the estate's king grape variety. Farming is carried out according to ecological principles, without chemical inputs, with short pruning and a low-interventionist approach. Yields are deliberately very low to guarantee the concentration of the berries, and harvesting is deliberately late in order to achieve optimal ripeness of the grapes, a hallmark of the house philosophy.

Vinifications of Domaine Joseph Roty

Vinification at Domaine Joseph Roty follows a precise and faithful protocol, passed down from generation to generation. Upon arrival in the cellar, the grapes are subject to very strict sorting to retain only the finest berries, then are entirely destemmed (100% destemming). A cold maceration precedes a long vatting of three weeks at controlled temperature (below 30°C), in concrete tanks, allowing a patient and controlled extraction of aromas, colours and tannins.

Ageing takes place in oak barrels for 15 to 18 months, with a proportion of new wood graduated according to the hierarchy of the cuvées: approximately 50% for the village wines, 60 to 70% for the lieu-dit wines and up to 100% for the Grands Crus. This approach, sometimes considered generous in its use of oak, imparts an opulent aromatic structure to the wines that integrates perfectly after a few years of cellaring. The result: dense, fleshy wines that are both powerful and sensual, endowed with a magnificent ageing potential.

The cuvées of Domaine Joseph Roty

The Bourgogne Pinot Blanc is a rarity from the estate, vinified from an atypical grape variety for the Côte de Nuits. Lively, floral and mineral, it offers a pure and thirst-quenching expression, testifying to the diversity of the Roty heritage.

The Bourgogne Rouge, from young Pinot Noir vines located in Marsannay, captivates with its freshness, vibrant fruitiness and silky texture. An excellent introduction to the world of Roty.

The Coteaux Bourguignons, produced from 100% Pinot Noir since 2012 (replacing the former Bourgogne Grand Ordinaire appellation), yield an airy, perfumed wine, vibrant with energy and great drinkability.

The Marsannay red stands out for its deep colour and its rich, complex nose blending morello cherry, blackcurrant, vanilla and soft spices. The palate is broad, juicy, supported by fruit-coated tannins, with a flavourful finish and beautiful length.

The Marsannay Cuvée de Boivin comes from a privileged lieu-dit of the appellation. This wine develops spiced notes, red fruits and a chocolatey touch, on a dense and silky texture, testament to the Roty finesse applied to Marsannay.

The Marsannay Clos de Jeu offers a Pinot Noir of great purity, more vertical and mineral, with a fine tannic framework and an aromatic brilliance that places this cuvée among the most precise in the appellation.

The Gevrey-Chambertin village is a superb expression of the appellation, unfolding aromas of cherry, blackcurrant and smoked meat. The palate is fleshy, endowed with ripe tannins and a sapid finish, with a fine ageing potential.

The Gevrey-Chambertin Cuvée de la Brunelle, an emblematic lieu-dit, offers a spiced, sensual and silky wine, perfumed with violet and tobacco, with a moreish texture and melting tannins. A delicious and flattering cuvée.

The Gevrey-Chambertin Cuvée du Clos Prieur Bas reveals a floral and deep nose, a broad, mouth-filling and flavourful palate, with superb complexity. One of the finest village-level expressions of the estate, with a remarkable structure.

The Gevrey-Chambertin Cuvée de Champs-Chenys, from vines planted in 1934 directly adjoining the Grand Cru Charmes-Chambertin, unfolds aromas of cherry, plum, liquorice, spices and peony. The palate, broad and fleshy, presents supple tannins and a saline finish.

The Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Fontenys, a plot neighbouring the Grand Cru Ruchottes-Chambertin, yields a wine of great backbone, more earthy and structured, endowed with magnificent depth and great ageing potential.

The Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru embodies thoroughbred elegance in its purest form, unfolding a perfumed nose of great class, a palate full of energy, perfectly structured, without the slightest harshness, with an airy and long finish.

The Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru, produced in confidential quantities (sometimes a single barrel) from century-old vines, offers a subtle and refined aromatic profile, a palate of superb volume, with a chiseled structure and striking depth. A cult wine among enthusiasts.

The Charmes-Chambertin Très Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru represents the absolute pinnacle of Roty's production. From vines planted in 1881, it unfolds an aromatic profile of silent concentration, a massive yet perfectly balanced palate, of prodigious density, with a near-infinite length. A living legend of Burgundy, to be patiently cellared in order to discover all its facets.
