The wines of Château Pétrus

Chateau Petrus is undoubtedly the most prestigious wine of the Pomerol appellation (AOC on the right bank of the Dordogne near Bordeaux). This exceptional vineyard, the property of the Maison Jean-Pierre Moueix since 1969, covers 11.4 hectares of vines planted on a very distinctive soil. The terroir of Chateau Petrus is indeed composed of a pocket of very fine, swelling black and blue clays known as "montmorillonite," which absorb and release water to the vine in very small quantities. The vines, averaging 40 years of age, are managed using a reasoned approach, and the vineyard is planted with a single red grape variety: 100% Merlot (the half-hectare of Cabernet Franc having been uprooted in 2010).

The TOP winemakers of Bordeaux

Pétrus produces only one red Bordeaux wine, and owes its worldwide renown in all likelihood to the foresight of Mme Labat and Jean-Pierre Moueix. The former believed as early as 1945 in the potential of Petrus, which she regarded as the equal of the premier grands crus classés of the Médoc on the left bank, and even presented it to British royalty at the wedding of Queen Elizabeth II. The latter, a négociant who distributed Petrus, made it the Kennedy family's favourite wine and helped to perpetuate its greatness and its image of excellence. Pétrus is a rich, round and velvety wine with aromas of blackcurrant and cherry, liquorice, violet and truffle. Although very concentrated, with a lush and opulent fruit, the red wine of Pétrus is distinguished by an incredible harmony and persistence...
